He was a professor for nearly 25 years at Duke University law school.
He received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated from Yale Law School. He served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black before joining the Duke law school faculty.
