The most expensive sporting event in North America was almost undone by the failure of a few screws.
Formula One’s F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix is still reeling from a practice run incident on Thursday. That’s when a car was badly damaged by the screws from a street manhole. The event’s first practice run by Carlos Sainz Jr. was canceled when his vehicle ran over a cover on the temporary street course. It caused extensive damage to the underbody of his Ferrari and Sainz said the piece broke through far enough to damage his seat. F1 then closed the course to inspect the entire circuit, which includes a long portion of the Vegas Strip.
That was merely the latest mishap in the estimated $500 million event. Poor ticket sales, caustic comments from the leading F1 driver, Max Verstappen, and complaints from locals have all put a damper on the event,...

John Malone-owned Liberty Media is revving up for Formula One’s landmark race on the Las Vegas strip set to unspool with fanfare next weekend.
Formula One, a promoter of the race, and owed by Liberty, has been prepping the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix for a year, building a 3.8-mile track (6.2 kilometers) that starts at 10 Pt Saturday after a weekend of practice and qualifying sessions. It airs on ESPN.
Liberty leased Jim Dolan’s new Las Vegas Sphere, inside and out — so no U2 that weekend. The company bought out all external ad space and leased some out, said CEO Greg Maffei at Liberty Media investor conference in New York today. “It was necessary for us, because we have to be on their land.” He said the event will hold a “recovery brunch” inside the structure on Sunday morning showing highlights of the race.

Walt Disney Co. wants to keep auto racing on track.

The new contract will keep F1 races on ESPN networks in the United States through the 2025 season.
“Formula 1 and ESPN have been a strong and successful team and we’re delighted to extend our relationship,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN’s president of programming and original content, in a statement. “We look forward to serving fans in some new and innovative ways in the next three years as we continue to bring the reach and relevance of the Walt Disney Company networks and platforms to Formula 1.”

Formula 1 races will continue on ESPN Networks in the United States through the 2025 season.
A new multi-year contract renewal was announced in Austin at the second of two US stops for F1 during the 2022 season.
Under the renewal, at least 16 races will air on ABC and ESPN each season, more than in the previous five years since F1 returned to ESPN networks in 2018. Also, all race telecasts on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will continue the commercial-free presentation used over the past five seasons.
In what may be a harbinger of an as-yet unannounced but long-rumored online gambling venture, the new agreement also gives ESPN flexibility to roll out additional ways for US fans to explore F1 content over the next three years, including on ESPN+. The companies said details on that are to be announced later.

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 25 (Ians) Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali doesn’t expect a women to drive in the series in the near future, even though they are making efforts to make things easier for women.

U.S. media rights to Liberty Media’s rising auto racing circuit Formula 1 have reportedly been renewed by ESPN through 2025 after the Disney-owned sports operation outmaneuvered Netflix and other tech suitors.
The pact is worth in the area of 75 million to 90 million a year, according to Sports Business Journal, which first reported the deal. While such a number would be exponentially higher than the 5 million level of the current contract, it is believed to be less than what several tech giants were offering.
Reps for ESPN and Formula 1 declined to comment on the report when contacted by Deadline. Complete plans for how the package would be delivered remain under wraps, but other sports set up at ESPN find their way across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+, ABC and other platforms.

Formula 1 is back on familiar turf this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix, a glamour-wrapped race that has been a fixture since 1929.
While many of the track contours and Côte d’Azur vistas are little changed, the auto racing circuit itself has a decidedly revamped look. Earlier this month, it made a splashy debut in Miami, the latest stop in its U.S. expansion, which will take it to Las Vegas next year. That bow followed the arrival of the latest season of Netflix docu hit Drive to Survive, with the show adding pop-culture luster to negotiations for a potentially lucrative new U.S. media deal.
“The American market is ready for F1,” Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali told Deadline in an interview ahead of today’s race. “Being ready means that we need to keep working on the fact that we need to stay connected with our fans in the U.

Liberty Media CEO and SiriusXM chairman Greg Maffei said Thursday that the satellite broadcaster’s star host Howard Stern, whose contract ends this year, is likely to re-up and apologized that a recently announced top management reshuffle was handled too abruptly.
“I think we were surprised by the market reaction and maybe in hindsight we should have been smarter,” Maffei said on a conference call today. Liberty is the controlling shareholder of SiriusXM, which announced unexpectedly in mid-September that its highly regarded CEO Jim Meyer and longtime CFO David Frear were stepping down. Meyer was replaced by Jennifer Witz, head of Sales, Marketing and Operations, and Frear by former AMC Networks CFO Sean Sullivan.
It was a lot, Maffei said, to announce “the changing out the CEO and CFO at same time [with] the overhang of, ‘Is Howard going to sign.’ ”
The drama over Stern has been dragging on for months.
