Exclusive: Six and a half years after The Mindy Project ended its Hulu run, Mindy Kaling is back at the streamer with a new single-camera comedy, Murray Hill. The project, from Warner Bros. TV, where Kaling is under an overall deal, was taken out at the beginning of the year. In a tough marketplace, the project garnered interest from multiple buyers, landing at Hulu in a competitive situation with a script-to-series commitment.
Written by Kaling, the comedy revolves around five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.
Kaling executive produces via her Kaling International and its overall deal at Wbtv alongside 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein. Kaling International’s Jessica Kumai Scott co-executive produces.

Grey’s Anatomy continues to be in a league of its own, landing a renewal for a 21st season. The pickup, which comes three episodes into Grey’s Anatomy‘s landmark 20th season, extends its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama, which it initially set in 2019, and the longest-running ABC primetime scripted series. I hear Season 21 is expected to consist of 18 episodes, up from the 10-episode strike-impacted 20th season.
The early renewal is a testament to the show’s ability to reinvent itself and stay relevant even with its lead, Ellen Pompeo, not being on-screen full-time as a new group of interns was introduced last season. Pompeo continues to recur in addition to serving as an executive producer and providing the voiceover that opens and closes each episode.

Grey’s Anatomy is headed into its 20th season, and that big milestone is front and center in the series’ official poster, which features cast members arranged around the number 20. Like last year’s official cast photo, this year’s poster includes the main cast, plus recurring guest stars Debbie Allen (who is also Grey’s executive producer/director) and Scott Speedman. (The only person missing from last year’s group is Kelly McCreary who exited the series last season.)
Naturally, the three remaining original cast members, Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., are most prominent.(As Deadline reported in our Season 20 preview, Pompeo, who is an executive producer, will continue to get top billing. While technically no longer a series regular, she still does the voiceovers and recurs, with her character Meredith remaining the heart of the show.)

Grey’s Anatomy continues to rewrite the TV history books, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama with the upcoming landmark 20th season, which premieres this Thursday, March 14.
This also marks the first season of Meg Marinis, an 18-year Grey’s Anatomy veteran, as the series’ showrunner. And she is not planning it as the drama’s final chapter.
“I’ve not been informed that this is the last season so I’m going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me,” she told Deadline in an interview tied to the Season 20 premiere. “We still have stories to tell. We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland. So I’m going to keep going until they tell me to put that pen down.”
Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy comes from Rhimes’ Shondaland and ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios.

For the first time since at least 1999, a brand new daytime soap opera is closer to making its way to broadcast television. CBS Studios and NAACP Venture announced today they are developing a new daytime drama series for the CBS Television Network titled “The Gates,” with veteran writer Michele Val Jean set as writer and showrunner.
Val Jean, who exited “The Bold and the Beautiful” last month as a scriptwriter after writing more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and winning multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards, will also serve as an executive producer for “The Gates” alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner.
The potential series will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. It will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&g Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. P&g, in particular, might...

When 9-1-1 was canceled, our hearts sank.
Luckily, the cancellation came with a caveat: Fox's former flagship series was being picked up by rival network ABC.
It was a stunning decision that came after a booming 9-1-1 Season 6, which saw the series re-embracing many qualities that made it such a success from the onset.
At the time, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich said:
"Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons, and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC."
When the last season wrapped up, all the principal characters were in a solid place, with the 118 even doing some bonding on the roof, memories of their most recent triumphs playing fresh on their minds.

Does the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour still hold value?
That topic was a frequent debate at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California, where the TCA winter press tour wrapped Thursday after two weeks and a dizzying number of panels featuring stars, producers and the occasional executive.
TCA can still bring out the big stars (Apple had Michael Douglas, Hulu delivered Jon Bon Jovi, and Annette Bening and Snoop Dogg were highlights at NBCU) but the real value — aside from showcasing programming to a shrinking press corps that has been overwhelmed by Peak TV — comes from executive sessions that can help lay out a platform strategy that many will cover for months on end.
Before we get into the biggest takeaways from TCA, allow us to make an appeal to Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global to return to press tour. Yes, we know it’s...

NBC has given a pilot order to Grosse Pointe Garden Society, a long-in-the-works drama from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs.
The drama follows four members of a suburban garden club, all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.
The studio is Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. Production company is Minnesota Logging Company. Casey Kyber is a non-writing EP.

This article contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 3.
From the beginning, the Hulu comedy mystery series Only Murders in the Building has been pretty clear about its premise. As the name suggests, lead characters Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) only solve murders that happen in their New York City apartment building The Arconia. After season 2 ended with Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) falling dead on a broadway stage, season 3 went so far as to have Ben come back from the dead just so he could suffer his final death in the Arconia. The show clearly takes its premise seriously, but one major change in season 4 will test how far it can go.
According to Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, Only Murders in the Building is officially leaving the Arconia in season 4 and heading to Los Angeles. During the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour,...

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich gave an interview where he spoke about the upsetting cancellation of Station 19 at ABC.
If you don’t know, the hit show is coming to an end at the end of this upcoming season, and fans have been devastated over this decision.
Keep reading to find out more…
When asked about the decision to end the series, Erwich shared with Deadline, “Well, every show has its own journey so to speak. In the case of Station 19, it was time to bring that story to an end. I love Station 19, and I think what’s amazing about Station 19 is that it was yes, a spinoff of Grey’s. But it really became its own show that stood on its own creatively and was fully realized and unique unto itself, and we’ve been very proud to have it on the air.

Looks like June and Serena are going to be on that train for a long time: The Handmaid’s Tale‘s upcoming Season 6, its final run, won’t premiere on Hulu until 2025.
In an interview with our sister site Deadline, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich, who’s in charge of Hulu’s original programming, said the dystopian drama would return to the screen sometime next year. We’re learning more about the upcoming sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes. In an interview with Deadline, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees content for Hulu Originals, said the sixth season now is set to begin production this summer for premiere in 2025. The series was renewed for its sixth and final season in September 2022, just ahead of its Season 5 premiere.
Season 5 follows June (Elisabeth Moss) in the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) murder and the consequences she must face for her role in the gruesome slaying. At a minimum, she will have to face off with his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and on some level Gilead. But mainly, she will be forced to redefine her identity and purpose,...

ABC kicked off the post-strike return of its scripted series last week with the network’s three comedies, one of which, flagship Abbott Elementary, received an early Season 4 renewal just a couple of days later. Following his TCA session on Saturday and ahead of the rollout of ABC’s drama lineup next week, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich spoke with Deadline about the effects from the dual Hollywood strikes which are the reason the new seasons of the broadcast scripted series are premiering in midseason and the launch of most new scripted shows, including ABC’s High Potential, was pushed to 2024-25.
ABC has not ordered pilots this pilot season. Erwich, who oversees ABC Entertainment, Hulu Originals, Disney Branded Television and Freeform, addressed whether the network would do pilot or straight-to-series pickups this year for other shows to join Drew Goddard’s High Potential next season. Hulu’s TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s romantasy book series “A Court of Thorns and Roses” has not been scrapped — yet. A Monday report said it is not moving forward at the streamer, and indeed its longterm fate at the streamer appears to be extremely murky.
TVLine reported the news that the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” TV series is no longer in the works at Hulu and that it was also not being shopped to other platforms. Variety‘s earlier story reported the series as scrapped based on initial remarks from sources, but Variety has now been told that technically the show is still in development at Hulu. But that’s semantics, as it is believed to no longer be in active development — which means it’s unclear what the fate of the project will be.

ABC may get new episodes of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ going forward, and airing on that channel has increased the hours streamed for the show on Hulu.
Despite the outwardly adversarial nature of linear television and streaming, there are ways for these two mediums to work together. Disney and Spectrum are demonstrating one such method, as Spectrum cable customers now get free access to Disney+ instead of having to pay to watch Disney content on cable channels and streaming simultaneously. Of course, it is much easier for linear and streaming to coexist when the platforms in question are owned by the same company. Disney is demonstrating another way that they can work together as the company is considering using its broadcast network ABC to air more episodes of its hit Hulu original series “Only Murders in the Building,” after the series’ first season aired on the network last month.

Titles across the Walt Disney library were viewed for a total of 54 billion hours in the U.S. in 2023 according to Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich, who says this number puts the company 10 billion hours above its closest competitor.

The Bachelor producers froze Saturday when asked at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour about why the franchise seemingly has a hard time handling racial issues.
During a panel featuring showrunners from Jeopardy, Dancing With the Stars and Shark Tank, NPR’s Eric Deggans polled Bachelor producing trio Jason Ehrlich, Claire Freeland (both newcomers) and franchise veteran Bennett Graebner about why former star Rachel Lindsay and Matt James were both critical about how the Warners-produced franchise talks about race.
Freeland, who joined the Warner Bros. TV-produced Bachelor franchise in January 2023, attempted a response by saying that the show’s goal is to “represent the country” before shifting away from the question. Deggans, a respected veteran journalist and TCA member, then reiterated the question in a more direct fashion. At that point, all three producers remained mum for around 10 seconds, creating one of the more awkward moments of press tour.

Once the 800 lb gorillas of television viewing, the broadcast networks have seen their statute diminished, with viewing migrating to streaming. The heads of two of the Big 3 broadcast networks now also oversee original programming for the sibling streamer, including Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich who is in charge of content for ABC, Hulu Originals as well as Freeform and Disney Branded Television.
In his opening remarks at TCA Saturday, Erwich argued about the value of programs running across platforms.

Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich said that Freeform would remain “very dedicated” to the young female adult audience it serves, despite the channel being impacted by the company’s new carriage agreement with Charter Communications.

Part two of Good Trouble’s fifth and final season is currently airing on Freeform, followed by Part two of grown-ish‘s sixth and final season in the spring . When it ends, so will the presence of original scripted series on the Disney cable network.
Once a destination for pop culture defining YA series such as Pretty Little Liars, Freeform over the past few years has scaled back its original scripted fare, with no current shows and no major projects in the pipeline.
There have been a lot of questions lately about the viability of original scripted programming on ad-supported basic cable, with many networks pulling away from it due to high costs that are hard to sustain amid declining linear ratings and accelerated cord-cutting.

Ahead of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy‘s 20th Season premiere on March 14, Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group that includes ABC Entertainment, spoke about the show’s future during the network’s TCA presentation on Saturday.
“Right now, our focus is on the immediate future of Grey’s Anatomy, which is celebrating its 20th season, a remarkable achievement, creatively and for the network, the audience and the creators,” Erwich said.
As for Grey’s Anatomy‘s longer-term future, “I think the show is as creatively strong as it’s ever been,” Erwich said. “Not just the live [episodes] you are watching today, but it’s fueling growth for our streaming platform.”
As Deadline reported in December, previous seasons of Grey’s Anatomy will be made available for the first time on a Disney streaming platform when they make their debut on the bundled Disney+/Hulu app and the standalone Hulu service starting in March.

Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich used his time before the press corps Saturday at TCA to spotlight the value of the Mouse House’s ecosystem.
Overseeing a portfolio that includes ABC, Freeform and Hulu as well as a slate of kids channels, the executive said the decision of what programming goes on linear or streaming is “not one vs. the other” but rather that all of the platforms are “complementary” and “non-duplicative” that “work together.”

What is pilot season anymore?
After Deadline revealed that CBS was not piloting any shows for the 2024-25 season and Fox is out of the traditional pilot process, ABC boss Craig Erwich gave his take on pilot season.

Last year, it emerged that ABC, NBC and Fox were moving all of their scripted originals to next season. For ABC, this included High Potential starring Kaitlin Olson, which Erwich said was “one of the best ABC shows I’ve seen since I’ve been there”.

It’s official! The Bachelor franchise is expanding once again.
After the success of the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor, ABC has decided to give a golden woman her own second chance at love on The Golden Bachelorette, the network announced Saturday at Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour panel.
So far, there’s no news on who will be the first leading lady, as ABC says those details will come later, along with the exact premiere date. President of Disney Television Group Craig Erwich says that casting is “well underway.”
ABC also announced Saturday that The Bachelorette is returning this summer. Likewise, no other details were shared.
Given the success of The Golden Bachelor, this new spinoff should come as no surprise. The premiere episode of The Golden Bachelor set ratings records for ABC, debuting as the highest-rated premiere on Hulu for any series in The Bachelor franchise, and as the network’s No. 1 series premiere ever on the streaming platform in Live+3 with 1.76 million views.
After 35-days of viewing, the premiere episode soared to a combined multi-platform audience of 13.9M viewers across its debut telecast on September 28 and its rebroadcast on October 3, and it set a streaming record as ABC‘s most-watched episode of an unscripted series ever on Hulu.
And it wasn’t just the premiere that received the ratings rose. By the time hometown dates rolled around, that episode boasted the franchise’s best 3-day audience in more than two years. The finale stayed strong too, delivering the franchise’s best audience in nearly four years.
The Golden Bachelorette joins a robust slate for the franchise that includes The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise and The Golden Bachelor. The entire franchise is produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon.

The comedy, which earned Brunson an Emmy, is a co-production between Disney’s 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television,...

The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.
The biggest shift in broadcast is the shortened 2023-24 seasons of scripted fare, production on which was delayed from the traditional summer start to the...

It’s been well over a year since the third season of Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville concluded, but fans have been left in limbo regarding the fate of the series. Will The Orville return or has it been canceled? We still don’t know, but according to MacFarlane, the series isn’t dead yet.
“I’m trying to remember what the exact, well-worded politic statement was that Hulu put out…,” MacFarlane told TVLine. “All I can say is the same thing that Hulu said, which is the show is not dead. Nobody has told me that it’s dead from the network, so we’re proceeding under those auspices.“
For the record, Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, said this about the possibility of The Orville season 4 last January: “We don’t have anything to share right now. It’s a great...

The first teaser trailer for 9-1-1 season seven has a real Titanic vibe. The 30-second video shows a ship in distress but doesn’t confirm that Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) are on board. However, given their history, there’s a 99.9% likelihood the twosome’s honeymoon plans will come to an abrupt – and watery – end.
At the end of season six, the couple decided to spend their honeymoon on a cruise without telling any of their friends. And so, of course, the new season will begin with a dramatic rescue at sea.
Season seven marks the show’s move from Fox to ABC. The new season kicks off on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 8pm Et/Pt.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network...
