With the horror genre being in somewhat of a hiatus since the end of the j-horror era that occurred in the mid-00’s, filmmakers from “alternative” countries stepped in to fill the gap. One distinct example is this Indonesian film by Upi Avianto, in her first attempt at the genre (she has directed 6 more films before “Shackled” but none horror ones).
“Shackled” is split in two parts. The first one delves into the metaphysical, where we watch the protagonist, Elang, a bartender, having nightmares regarding violent and bizarre murders while strange things seem to happen constantly in his life. Furthermore, a killer of women seems to be roaming the streets of his neighborhood and Elang is afraid for his neighbor Djenar and her daughter, suspecting her controlling husband, Guntur, who works as a knife thrower, dressed in a rabbit costume in quite a peculiar show.

I am slightly ashamed to admit that I haven’t seen many Indonesian horror films at all. It is something I need to rectify soon because I have heard good things about many films. So where better place to start than the new to Shudder movie The Queen of Black Magic.
With a slightly convoluted story, where we see past residents of an orphanage return to discover that someone is holding a grudge and now wants them dead. But it’s a movie that really doesn’t hold back when it comes to many elements of horror. None more so than gore. There’s a lot of it! It never feels over done or too much and it continuously impresses.

Cobra Kai season 3 is the first major streaming hit for Netflix in 2021. With each of the 10 episodes having running time of around a half hour, it makes for a quick binge overall. Dedicated fans inhaled the show in the first weekend and craved more.
Unfortunately, Netflix carries only one other film from the original Karate Kid franchise and it’s the outlier. The Next Karate Kid was Pat Morita’s final appearance as the venerable Mr. Miyagi. The film also introduces two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank in her first lead role as Julie Pierce. However, The Next Karate Kid was a flop. Morita is the only connection to the three previous films and despite Swank’s impressive breakout performance, Julie fails to carry the chemistry that Daniel-san (Ralph Macchio) had with Miyagi.
So where on Netflix can fans get their next Karate Kid fix? How about Indonesia?

Based on the short film Dara, Mo Brother’s (actual names Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto) debut feature is a genuine slasher film, so filled with gore and violence that became the first Indonesian film to be banned in Malaysia.
A group of people consisting of Adje and Astrid, a married couple expecting a baby, Alam, Eko, Jimmy, and Adje’s sister are heading to the airport in Jakarta. While on the road, they come across a very beautiful woman named Maya, who has been robbed and asks them to take her home. Eko is smitten with her and he persuades the others to comply. Eventually, they reach her house in the middle of nowhere, and she invites them in, to be properly thanked by her mother.

Two years ago we were treated to the lunacy of an off-the-wall little Asian splatterfest called Macabre, which played sort of like the goriest mix tape you ever dug on. For whatever reason it seemed as if it would be lost on the U.S. as no one stepped up to officially bring it here. Until now.
The good folks over at The Collective and Bloody Disgusting Selects just announced that they've acquired the North American rights to Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto's ("The Mo Brothers") Indonesian gore-a-thon Macabre (review here)!
The flick stars Ario Bayu, Julie Estelle, Imelda Therinne, Shareefa Daanish, and Arifin Putra.
Look for release info soon!
