Everyone has their one 'holy crap I can't wait for that!' moment at big conferences like this year's Gdc. This new trailer for Below just so happens to be mine. Come inside to see why.
At last night's Igf awards the very talented folks over at Capy (or Capybara games) released the latest trailer for Below, their survival-based take on a procedurally-generated dungeon crawler.
Toronto based, Capybara Games, developers of the recent Playstation 4 and Vita exclusive hit, Supertime Force Ultra and the absolutely stunning mobile title Superbrothers: Sword And Sorcery Ep have shown potential for another insanely beautiful hit in their latest trailer.
With more of the beautiful simplistic art style that has made Capy's previous titles so memorable, and a hypnotising track by the incredibly talented Jim Guthrie, Below's newest footage is absolutely enticing and I can't wait to dive in headfirst.
What's got you psyched so far from this year's Gdc expo?...

Amplitude, Harmonix’s long-awaited sequel to the original rhythm action games released for the PlayStation 2, has finally been given a release date. The game will see a full release on January 5th, 2016, but those who pledged $40 or more to the title’s Kickstarter campaign will get early access on December 23.
But why, after all this time, has the studio decided that now’s a good time to resurrect the long-gestating series? Well, a statement on Amplitude‘s Kickstarter page says it all, really.
With the advancements in technology and the huge creative leaps forward our studio has taken, we believe we can rebuild Amplitude for current consoles and make it an even more amazing experience than before. We’re aiming to deliver an updated soundtrack, incredible visuals, and fine-tuned controls. These improvements will be layered on top of the core mechanics and hallmark difficulty that made both FreQuency and Amplitude...

Below, the minimalist adventure game shown at Microsoft’s E3 press conference, will be only exclusive to the Xbox One for a set amount of time before appearing on other platforms.
Though it appeared as if Below would be exclusive to the Xbox One, developers Capybara Games blogged yesterday to assure the world that this wasn’t exactly the case. Here’s what they had to say:
Like many games on stage at E3, Below will be available on the Xbox One first. Then, after a period of time, Capy can bring it elsewhere. It’s always been this way.
They went on to praise Microsoft Studios for being “great” to work with and for putting such a bright spotlight on Below. Microsoft has been criticized for being out of touch and unfriendly to independent developers, so such compliments from the creators of the critical darling Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery Ep...

The 2013 Polaris Prize long list was announced today, June 13, in Montreal, revealing the forty Canadian albums that made it through the first round of the $30,000 critic-voted best Canadian album award.
“This year's Long List is all over the map, but in the best possible way,” said Polaris Music Prize founder Steve Jordan in a press release. “A lot of our jury expressed that this was the most difficult Polaris ballot they’ve ever submitted. The results of this careful and passionate deliberation will make for some truly engaging listening for music."
Indeed the music prize long list is incredibly eclectic, a testament to the diversity of Canadian music, and ranges from the popular electro-rock of Metric and noise-rock of Metz to electric powwow crew A Tribe Called Red and turntablist Kid Koala to the art-pop of The Luyas and the pop-pop of Tegan and Sara. It seems like Beck is taking a page out of the Flaming Lips’ playbook by releasing new music in a particularly unique fashion. The eccentric singer-songwriter is set to reveal three songs through a new PS3 video game titled "Sound Shapes."
The tracks – “Cities,” “Touch the People” and “Spiral Staircase” – will each be found on a different level of the game, which is set for release in a just a few weeks. Sony states that the new PS3 game is “a classic side-scrolling platformer where your actions make the music.” Sounds like quite the intriguing concept to us.
Other artist tracks set to appear are Deadmau5, I Am Robot And Proud and Jim Guthrie.
Beck is on a roll, having recently released his Jack-White produced track “I Just Started Hating Some People Today” as well as a new B-side “Blue Randy” after a lengthy period without new material.

One of the most creative and forward thinking musicians of our time, Beck, is once again looking to venture out and try something new. Never afraid to shy away from doing new things with his music, Beck will be lending three exclusive and unreleased tracks to the upcoming music-centric platformer, Sound Shapes from Queasy Games when it is released in a few short weeks.
Following in the musical footsteps of artists like deadmau5, Jim Guthrie, and I Am Robot and Proud (also known as developer Shaw-Han Liem), Beck will be lending his talent to a campaign "record" called "Cities" which will include the three never-before-heard tracks: "Cities," "Touch the People" and "Spiral Staircase." To compliment the exclusive audio, Steve Wilson of Pyramid Attack will be providing the unique visuals for each of the levels.

Sound Shapes is shaping up to be one of Sony's most anticipated digital games. Blending music and plaforming in an entirely new way, Queasy Games, in conjunction with Sce Santa Monica Studio, is lead by Jonathan Mak and Shaw-Han Liem, a team well-versed in making creatively crafted games and music respectively. Co-designer Liem, who is also known to perform on stage as I Am Robot and Proud, took some time to answer our questions about some of the concepts behind the game, as well as what it is like to collaborate with some of the industry's most well-known artists.

The iPhone and iPad indie hit is coming to larger, more powerful machines as developer Capybara Games promises minor tweaks and updates and a playable version at Pax East.

Here's how Capybara describes their Igf award-winning game:

Showcase: Toronto’S Diy Videogame Communities
As you may already know, the city of Toronto is home to a patchwork of vibrant, friendly creative communities – this is a city where people who are passionate about film, comics, art, design, technology & music seem to hang out together on a regular basis, producing some cool things in the process.
In the last few years, Toronto’s Diy videogame community has been making waves with artist-driven, unusually collaborative projects from local creators attracting audiences worldwide. Simultaneously, there are myriad events & initiatives put together by local organizers that are enabling, incubating & encouraging even more experimental projects.
Rockshow: Live Sword & Sworcery Music From Maestro Jim Guthrie
One particular project to emerge from Toronto earlier this year is Sword & Sworcery, an unusually collaborative project produced by an independent videogame studio located at Queen & Spadina known as Capy, with art, design & writing by the ambiguously pluralized local illustration firm Superbrothers Inc.

One of the biggest barriers to greater cultural understanding of the video game medium is the simple fact that most people don't know how games get made and who makes them. People understand that actors memorize lines, musicians string together chords and writers make stuff up to create their works. Along with the skill sets each endeavor requires, the creators also draw on an emotional spectrum to craft a performance.

Those who stay abreast of big releases on the iPhone and iPad are likely already familiar with "Sword & Sworcery Ep," one of the prettiest dang games to ever to grace the platform. In case you managed to miss all of the promotion (and the day Twitter exploded with random "S&Sep" tweets), your ignorance is being rewarded today with a sale for the game, bringing the price down from $5 to a dollar on iPhone and iPod Touch and two dollars on iPad.
"Sword & Sworcery Ep" can best be summed up as an homage to classic point-and-click adventure games, albeit with some "Punch-out!!"-esque action sequences and some truly remarkable pixel art. It also happens to have the best gaming soundtrack I've heard all year, "Sword & Sworcery LP - The Ballad of the Space Babies," which, as it so happens, is also on sale today. Directors Scott Ogden and Malcolm Hearn's documentary, "Make," is about four artists on the furthest fringes of our society. Isolated by their disabilities, they find a voice and try to make sense of a world that shuns them, through incredible works of art. These are the characters that inspired Sufjan Stevens' album, "The Age of Adz." Stevens, who called the film "a beautiful and insightful look at the sublime task of making art when nothing will else do," based his album's narrative specifically on the life and apocalyptic work of the schizophrenic artist, Prophet Royal Robertson featured in "Make."
Ogden first began documenting these people 12 years ago, beginning with a trip to visit Ike Morgan, and his paintings at the Austin State Hospital. The blind sculptor Hawkins Bolden, and severely disabled crafter, Judith Scott followed. Then Hearn joined Ogden in traveling the country, documenting more of their four subjects,...

In celebration of the Parks Canada centennial this stunning collaboration of Canada’s elite in filmmaking and music combine to create a visionary glimpse into the unique terrains of Canada’s national parks. Spanning our country, the diversity of landscape is showcased through the exquisite portrayal of time and memory and by the exceptional scores produced by the equally diverse roster of Canadian musicians. The film episodes serve as an ode to the terrains that give Canada it’s identity, and celebrate how as a country we can showcase our beauty and talents, but also make evident that with change of weather and life needs to be change of action and perception.
The films, chunked into episodes for each park, encapsulate a microcosm of sound, stopping the idea of filmmaking to allow the effortless landscapes to reveal themselves and accentuate the music of nature, whether it be silence, animal calls,...

The National Parks Project documentary is about two hours long. Two things will result from this: 1) If you see it in a theatre, your ass and legs will hurt by the time it’s over; and 2) If you see it in a city, you will emerge from the film incredibly restless after seeing thirteen of this country’s prettiest places.
Honouring Parks Canada’s centennial, three producers rounded up thirteen directors and three musicians for a national park in each province. The goal was to have the musicians create soundtracks based on how they were affected by the nature and experience of being in the national park. What was confusing though was who really dictated each film? Was it the filmmaker or the musicians? There’s a mix of short films that feature music heavily, while others barely have any music in them at all. The former tended to be the much more beautiful pieces,...

My first impressions of "Sword & Sworcery Ep" may have been slightly tainted by some excessive (but totally optional) Twitter functionality, but since I learned to ignore all the social media call-outs, I've been enjoying the game thoroughly. The tone, pacing and cleverness minds me of classics like "Portal" and it happens to have some of the best pixel art I've ever seen. But that's not why we're here today. We're here to talk about the soundtrack, which is now available for download.
From the beginning, "Sword & Sworcery Ep" has always been described as an audio and visual experience, the those excellent pixel graphics are the visual side. The audio side is primarily the work of Jim Guthrie, who composed the soundtrack, which is a devious mix of ambient chill punctuated by occasional bouts of fierce anxiety. Part of what's captivated the hundreds of thousands of people who've played through "Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery Ep" has been Jim Guthrie's haunting and picaresque music and sound design. The 8-bit action/RPG evokes a sense of mystery mostly due the lo-fi tonalities the indie stalwart was able to craft. As both a solo artist and part of Royal City, the Toronto native's recording career has been cited as an influence on acts like Feist, The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene.

Chances are, if you're a gamer or are following one on Twitter, the #sworcery hashtag's shown up in your timeline. It refers, of course, to "Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery Ep," the indie game just out for iPad.
A smidgen of indie developer insider buzz and in-the-know word-of-mouth preceded its release but, really, "Sword & Sworcery" was one of those games that you had to know about already to know about. Yet, despite its relative obscurity, it shot up to the #3 spot for paid apps for the iPad, with nothing to speak of in terms of marketing. One of the things that's led to the viral, explosive success of "Sworcery" is the way it integrates Twitter. Nearly every scene or dialogue exchange can be tweeted, serving several different purposes. #Sworcery tweets tease those who don't yet have the game, provide oblique hints for other players and reminds those who have completed it of what it was all like.

How "MTV Music Generator" and Jim Guthrie Inspired the Next Big Mobile Game, "Sword and Sworcery Ep"
It's no secret that we're enamored Capy Games' latest title, "Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery Ep," a downloadable game that will release on the iPad and iPad 2 sometime around the vernal equinox. We had a chance to catch up with one of the developers, Craig Adams, at this year's Game Developer's Conference. He updated us on the project, discussed future Superbrothers plans and praised "Motorstorm: Pacific Rift," all of which we'll get to as "S:s&Sep" approaches release. One thing we're happy to share today is this fascinating moment from the official Superbrothers' genesis story.
A few minutes into our conversation, Adams praised Canadian musician Jim Guthrie, who he credited as an inspiration and an honorary member of Superbrothers.
"I sent him my first published illustrations back in 04, and lo and behold he got in touch. He's just that kind of guy. He actually sent me a record. 10 compositions he'd made on a PlayStation.

The highly anticipated indie game experiment Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery Ep just got a new trailer and a release date. Well, sort of. The mysterious “Audience Calibration Procedure” embedded below doesn’t contain an exact release date per se, but it does stress the significance of the Vernal Equinox – the first day of Spring.
So what do we know about S:s&S? We previously described the game as “an unlikely mix of Zelda and art house cinema“; a game that melds exploration and emotion with the unique capabilities of Apple’s iDevices. The project is a collaboration between Toronto developers Capybara Games, artist/illustrator superbrothers and acclaimed musician Jim Guthrie. Capy already have a stellar reputation with the excellent Critter Crunch and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes under their belts. The involvement of Guthrie and superbrothers makes Sword & Sworcery an exciting convergence of Canadian talent.
