Exclusive: Metrograph Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to The Black Sea, the offbeat comedy from Crystal Moselle and Derrick B. Harden which debuted at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Metrograph will release the pic theatrically later this year.
Inspired by Harden’s travels to Bulgaria, and improvised by Harden and its Bulgarian cast, The Black Sea traces the journey of a charismatic dreamer from Brooklyn who inadvertently ends up as the only Black person in a small town on the Black Sea in Eastern Europe. While initially, all he wants is to get home, he becomes increasingly drawn to the unorthodox characters and unexpected connections he finds.
UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. The film was produced by Izabella Tzenkova, Kotva Films, and GiveThanks. Executive producers include Andrea Leibof, Cameron Brody, Dana Høegh, Jonas Carpignano, Josh Peters, Robina Riccitiello, Ted Hope, and Ted Wright.

American indie filmmaker Crystal Moselle has been on both sides of the scripted/non-scripted aisle of storytelling. Her 2015 documentary “The Wolfpack,” about six Angulo brothers confined to a Lower East Side New York housing project apartment while passing their days reenacting scenes from their favorite movies, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance that year. Her Gotham-nominated feature “Skate Kitchen” took a scripted narrative approach to rolling back the ins and outs of a chaotic subculture of female skateboarders, all coming of age, in New York City. Her latest feature “The Black Sea,” co-directed by the film’s star Derrick B. Harden, takes an entirely unscripted approach to the drama of a Brooklyn barista, Khalid (also played by Harden), with dreams of his own left stranded in Bulgaria, passport stolen, after a catfishing scheme implodes before his eyes.

HBO has given a series order to the skateboarding comedy “Betty” from “Skate Kitchen” director Crystal Moselle and “Love” co-creator Lesley Arfin.
Inspired by Moselle’s critically-acclaimed 2018 Sundance hit “Skate Kitchen,” the six-episode series is set against the backdrop of New York City and follows “a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.”
Rachelle Vinberg will reprise her role from the film, starring in the series as Camille, a young skater who “wants to be down with the dudes and has fought hard for the small space she’s carved out with them.” She’ll be joined in the series by a few “Skate Kitchen” co-stars, including Nina Moran as Kirt, Kabrina Adams (aka Moonbear) as Honeybear, Dede Lovelace as Janay and Ajani Russell as Indigo.

Walking On Water director Andrey Paounov on Christo: "Every one of his projects is like a small art war. I find it extremely fascinating. Just for cinema this is incredible." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Walking On Water, directed by Andrey Paounov and edited with Anastas Petkov, produced by Izabella Tzenkova and Valeria Giampietro, captures the creation of Christo's Floating Piers at Lago d'Iseo in Northern Italy, and the creator at war with himself and those around him in an intimate and public in-your-face way.
Andrey Paounov: "It's all about character and character development and really trying to sculpt this piece that allows you to kind of walk into Christo's shoes."
In my conversation with Andrey Paounov we start with the emotional journey Christo ignites as he tries to get The Floating Piers off the ground and onto a body of water. Vladimir Yavachev, a relentless driving force on the project, was the director's initial connection.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Walking on Water, the documentary about famed installation artist Christo that had its world premiere last month at the Toronto Film Festival. The doc from Andrey M Paounov, which offers an inside, cinema verite look at the planning and construction of Christo’s 2016 piece The Floating Piers, will now hit theaters in spring 2019. It next screens November 1 at Doc NYC.
The Floating Piers, built on Italy’s Lake Iseo, was a 3-kilometer walkway that allowed visitors to walk across stretches of the lake giving the sensation of floating and walking on water. The piece, up for 16 days, drew more than 1.2 million visitors.
Kotva Films’ Izabella Tzenkova and Ring Films’ Valeria Giampietro produced.
“Walking on Water is truly a cinematic experience,” said Paounov. “With its verite style, it pays homage to the great documentary films of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Kino...

Exclusive: Andrey Panouov’s documentary Walking On Water about famed installation artist Christo’s latest logistically improbable, eye-candy work is having its North American premiere Saturday at the Toronto Film Festival, where the pic is playing in the Tiff Docs section.
The cameras follow Christo cinema verité style as he completes his mammoth The Floating Piers, a project that debuted in 2016 at Italy’s Lake Iseo near the Alps. The result is breathtaking and exhilarating to those who got to see it, as the clip shows: it’s 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric covering a dock composed of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes that float on the surface of the water, allowing users to “walk on water” for almost 2 miles.
In many ways the project from conception to completion is similar to Christo’s famed pieces like The Gates in New York’s Central Park (2005), The Surrounded Islands on Miami’s Biscayne...

The holidays are winding down and that means we at Ioncinema.com are gearing up for our annual pilgrimage to Park City where an A-list of documentaries is now set to premiere. Earlier this month Tabitha Jackson and the Sundance doc programming team let the cats out of the bag, unsurprisingly announcing much anticipated Us Doc Competition titles such as the Ross Brothers’ Western, Louie Psihoyos’ Racing Extinction, Marc Silver’s 3 1/2 Minutes and Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe’s (T)Error, along with some surprises like Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel’s bizarro Kickstarted doc Finders Keepers (see trailer below). Having been produced by the fine folks behind The King of Kong and Undefeated, the film bears all the markings of its well regarded pedigree, yet appears to be of even odder ilk, following the story that unfolded when a severed human foot was discovered in a grill bought at a North Carolina auction.
