Both Sides of the Blade (Claire Denis)
In Both Sides of the Blade a romance breaks down and threatens to break up in a stylish apartment overlooking the sweet Parisian skyline. The director is of course Claire Denis, a filmmaker whose last work began in a place that looked like Eden and ended in a spaceship plummeting toward no less than a black hole. A baroque melodrama that might just maybe be a trolling farce, Both Sides of the Blade‘s concerns are of a more earthbound variety–though if the insistent strings of Tindersticks’ score are something to go by, they are of no less importance. – Rory O. (full review)

Robert Newman — who spent 28 years playing heroic Josh Lewis on CBS’ gone-but-not-forgotten serial Guiding Light — is still trying to get the lay of the land in Genoa City after assuming the role of Ashland Locke on CBS’s The Young and the Restless last month. “I’m not quite sure who the good guys are and who the bad guys are!” he admits with a laugh. We know the feeling! Now running Newman-Locke with his wife/boss, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), Ashland has been battling life-threatening lung cancer—which his father-in-law, the venerable Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), is convinced is fake! “It’s like a fast-moving speed chess game that these two are playing, where Ashland is just trying to stay one move ahead,” says Robert. Victor makes a bold move on Friday, March 11, presenting Victoria with damning evidence obtained by lawyer Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc). “In my view, Ashland...

While the five-year stretch that comprised his first five films resulted in Xavier Dolan’s rise in international prominence, the last years haven’t been as kind, with It’s Only the End of the World and The Death and Life of John F. Donovan receiving less-than-stellar reviews and distribution woes. The most recent film still doesn’t have U.S. distribution–despite the impressive cast of Kit Harington, Jacob Tremblay, Natalie Portman, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, and Thandie Newton–but it’ll arrive in France this March and the first international trailer has landed.
Josh Lewis said in his Tiff review, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, his most ambitious undertaking yet (dealing with three major characters in two different timelines), however carries with it a bizarre desperation to be taken seriously, deploying a lot of the same stylistic tics with a hesitance and muddled fragmentation meanwhile...
