Microbudget master James Christopher’s Look At Me Again is the latest in his series of solid character studies about twenty- and thirty-somethings, relationships, love and friendship. It's he story of three sisters who face various difficulties in their personal and romantic lives struggle to hold everything together. Christopher, who’s directed a variety of films, most of which are comedic efforts, really stretches his legs by focusing the narrative on the drama and honesty surrounding these women’s lives. You’ll find that the theme of “honesty” plays a huge role both in this review and in the film itself.

That's a wrap, folks.
It's always bittersweet to say goodbye to a film's cast and crew. For eight months we wrestled with scripts, dove into preproduction and finalized the movie. With over 160 pages and over 50 speaking roles, it was not just the most ambitious film(s) I've done, it's the most ambitious indie film done as our "level." And I'm proud to say that, as hard as it was at times, we pulled it off.

This weekend was, in many ways, what Twitchy Dolphin is about. We shot a lot. And we did a lot of shots! (Not really.)
Twitchy has built a reputation of being a family -- and a team that puts the work first, that is working hard for each other not just for "making it." It's a team that has people traveling from all over to make movies with us. So for our second-to-last weekend, we had Mike Donis (Toronto), Marc Wasserman (La), Dave Cohen (Florida) and Janet Mayson (Illinois) on set. It's always as much a family reunion as it is work. We've always prided ourselves in making the experience of...

Being an indie filmmaker can -- to put it nicely -- test you. It can throw wrenches into your plans, disrupt your routine. As they say, "Adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it."
The crew behind the Quad X Saga has weathered their share of issues: lost locations, productions issues, revolving cast members. When I had to step in as a police detective due to a casting issue, the rest of the cast and crew rallied like a team and so far it's gone off without a hitch.
On this weekend, we rolled into three long days. I mean long. A parade of actors flew in from out of town to get some screen time.

Since variety is the spice of life, it was a blast on the Quad-x set this past weekend. Scenes dealing with the attempt to shut down the porn company and scenes dealing with some of the more "horror" aspects were shot during three days of crazy shooting.
We welcomed actress Allison Wood back on set. Allison, a fixture in Austin indie film, has been in Twitchy films since the very beginning. She and Twitchy owner Nathan Bybee took a turn as married senators bent on saving the world from non-Christians. Nothing like poking some fun at the politicians who are trying to push us in a more restrictive direction. That's the...

"Week Three: Aka You See Every Time He Gets a ... He Passes Out"
Yep, that's what we were doing this weekend! We were seven days into the movie now and the core of the story was starting to really be shaped. Can't say enough about all the hard work the actors have done getting this thing going. We're seeing some of the most fully formed characters from our actors that we've ever seen. For this film to be successful -- and by the reaction of the crew, it's well on its way to be that -- we need the cast to bring it. We need them to be these characters and...

You see the indie world of making a movie. The truly indie world where you rely on the kindness of strangers and you're often subject to rapid changes of mind and focus on the part of those that are not truly invested in the project as you are. It's one of the hardest jobs of an indie director ... to keep people's internal motivation to work on the project high, knowing that some of the normal motivators of the film industry just aren't there.
We got everyone going this weekend, knowing it would be a fast shoot. Most of us were being pulled in a bunch of different directions for SXSW and...

We jumped into the production with both feet ... and arms and other appendages. It is a mockumentary about the adult film industry, after all! I was tickled at how well oiled the crew already is. While we have been together for a long time, there is normally some period of adjustment that is needed to get cracking.
We jumped in and Elena Weinberg was our first actress playing both Daisy and Serenity. I can't thank her enough for taking on both parts. It's a huge strain on her and a huge relief for me to have a talented and a true professional taking on that double duty. Vanessa Perry and Terissa Kelton...

Tomorrow, I'll sit at the director's chair for my ninth and tenth features for Twitchy Dolphin (Littlefield was distributed by Twitchy, but shot before it existed). I'm trying to find some calm before the storm that will inevitably set in on my life. Shooting a movie is tough personally and on my wife, who must live with me being very distracted.
So what is The Xxxx Saga? It's two movies at once ... both mockumentaries (think Spinal Tap and Best in Show) follow an adult film company. Both films will be shot at the same time, the second of which (The Porn Movie Massacre) adds the element of a slasher movie to the mix.

Full disclosure: I met director James Christopher at a film festival here in New York and spent a lot of time chatting about movies, his filmmaking approach, and the film he had in competition, Abram’s Hand. The movie is a dark and nasty swipe at the Westboro Baptist Church and their absurd anti-everything stances. The interesting thing about religious fanaticism to me has always been the terrifyingly dogmatic adherence to whatever hate is spewed from a pastor or priest’s mouth. While in recent days, Libby Phelps Alvarez has discussed her “escape” from the Westboro Baptist Church, those interested can read more about the true horror of what it means to be involved in a hate group right here. Regardless, the material interested me and I was lucky enough to hang with Christopher and his Twitchy Dolphin Flix crew from Austin, including the star of Goin Guerrilla, Mark MacCarver.

After a successful Indiegogo campaign, director James Christopher and the folks at Twitchy Dolphin Flix were able to bring their story of a hot screenwriter tired of delivering soulless sex comedies to life. The screenwriter, played in nebbish Woody Allen-esque fashion by Mark MacCarver, instead begins working on a historical love story. Primarily a romantic comedy, the film works as a dissection of the film-making process. A super-indie dissection, and, to be honest, a genuinely sweet and funny one, as well.

James Christopher is directing the new Twitchy Dolphin Flix film 3 References. This is the final entry in his production diary for Slackerwood.
When Lauren Shelton called a wrap on the production of 3 References, a special kind of depression set over me. I looked around the cast and crew and realized this was the last time this group of people with this chemistry would be working together on this flick. And while I know we'll all work together again, it will never be the exact same. It's what makes doing indie film so special. The experience is its own reward.
We shot just two light days to finish the film. But they were action-packed to be sure and we saw the arrival of some of our favorite people from all across the country to come in and do some cameos and celebrate 3 References.

There is really no better place to be a (true) indie filmmaker than Austin, Texas. Period. End of story. It's a community that opens its doors in support for indie film, making it possible for filmmakers to really focus on getting everything right for their movies. In the spirit of that coordination, a big thank you goes out to Dirty Bill's on 6th and the Wurst Tex food truck that both let us shoot in and around their locations.
This was the final big weekend for 3 References. We welcomed Look at Me Again star Vanessa Vayle Perry back to the fold. Of special personal interest to me was the return to the screen of Daniel Cano, a guy I acted with way back in high school. And I'm an old guy,...

There are so many reasons why this has been one of the best shoots we've had in our five-year history. Driving home after another 14+ hour day last night, it hit me. I think a big part of it is attributed to the new blood. We at Twitchy have always prided ourselves on building a troupe mentality and we are dedicated to growing with the same collaborators, but the influx of new energy and ideas cannot be understated.
What began as a last-minute change in the lead gave us Harper Graham and her performance has been beautiful and vulnerable. Just fantastic. Cassidy Schiltz, Lauren Hayes, Mike Williams, Sasha Aimee, Lacey Hernandez, Alicia Dufour, Andrea Dettling and a slew of others have melded nicely with the old Twitchy guard to really create some memorable performances.

When you shoot on the micro level, you really have to rely on the kindness of others. You have to convince the cast and crew that it's a good idea to get involved in a project where their pay might be deferred because the project is worth it or that that they will get some degree of publicity by making the film. And you have to rely on folks opening up their homes to a film crew of 12 people, in addition to cast members, for 12 to 18 hours.
This weekend, we invaded the home of longtime Twitchy fan Anne-Marie Messineo and he awesome dog George. He quickly became a hit with the entire cast and crew. We can't thank her enough for being so cool with letting us use her living room,...

So, back on set for 3 References with two very different days of shooting. Saturday brought us some broad comedy with Sarah England, playing Donna, breaking into Christian Swacker's apartment wearing nothing but an overcoat and smile, only to find the object of her desire unwilling. It's a scene very indicative of the central theme of the movie -- at some point life moves beyond just the desire for the physical.
The scene, comical in nature, is very counter to one of the emotional low points in the film involving Terissa Kelton as Kelly-the-ex and Christian's character Nick. Terissa did an excellent job of playing a woman on the emotional edge and then slowly sliding off.
I can't say enough about this cast. Through the turmoil of changing personnel, locations and crew,...

Shooting an indie film on a micro budget is like no other challenge out there. In movies with large budgets, if a problem arises, you simply toss some money on it. On a micro-budget set, if something goes wrong, you need to think your way out of it. It's part of the challenge, part of the fun and a big reason why you need to have a team of cast and crew you can rely on. As Twitchy Dolphin enters its "Troy Aikman" film (our eighth one, see what we did there?) we certainly have those things in spades.

The name of James Christopher's and Chris Copple's production company couldn't sound pretentious. Christopher and Copple were halfway through production on their first feature-length film Littlefield when, after a night of beer drinking, the name Twitchy Dolphin Flix surfaced and was chosen.
Christopher is now the company's president and writer/director, and Copple the creative director and director of photography. From their first feature-length film Funny Books to the company's upcoming eighth film 3 References, their business partnership is going strong.

He and Copple shared disinterest in their summer digital documentary class, which led to their collaboration on the short film Strike Team Archangel, an adaptation of Christopher's 26-page script.
