Considering the slippery prevarication that led up to the official word that former showrunner Steven Moffat had written a new episode of Doctor Who for series 14, this next confirmation arrived with relative ease.
In a very enjoyable and in-depth interview by Tom Spilsbury at TV Choice Magazine ahead of Moffat’s new episode “Boom” airing this weekend, the ex-Who boss confirmed rumours that yes, he’s written this year’s Christmas Special.
Moffat told TV Choice that the 2024 special might well be his final ever Doctor Who episode, but then again, it also might not be.
“I’m not against doing another one at all, but I don’t have any tremendous visceral need to do another one. As I got to the end of Boom, and as I got to the end of Joy To The World [his upcoming Christmas special], I did think, ‘Is that it? Is that the final moment?’ I...

If there’s one downside to the great news that Jodie Whittaker is joining Doctor Who as its first ever female Doctor this Christmas, it means that we don’t have much longer left with the amazing Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor has proven himself born to play the part of the centuries-old Time Lord over the past three seasons and his performance has been reliably brilliant throughout.
There’s another important changeover to keep in mind, though, as this year’s Christmas special will also be the last episode helmed by Steven Moffat as showrunner after working on the hit series for six seasons. That’s a long time to spend on a project, especially one as time consuming as this, and the writer/director is clearly getting a bit emotional as his job comes to an end.

According to numerous sources on Twitter, it looks likely that filming has wrapped on this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. The currently untitled episode is hugely notable as it will be the final instalment helmed by showrunner Steven Moffat and, more importantly (sorry, Moff), the last to star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. As such, the end of production was celebrated by a ‘golden wrap’ party.
The tweets below are from various Doctor Who personnel. Namely, brand manager Edward Russell, casting director Andy Pryor and Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury.
The Doctor Who 'Golden Wrap' party was lovely! Marvellous to see so many good friends – and to congratulate everyone who has worked so hard.
