Chicago – Public education is in the fight of its life. As curriculums are determined more through the state, parents and politics, the local authority of a child’s educator is being consistently diminished. This subject is the centerpiece of “The Teacher’s Lounge,” co-written and directed by German/Turkish filmmaker Ilker Çatak.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Carla (Leonie Benesch) is a dedicated, idealistic young teacher in her first job at a German middle school. Her relaxed rapport with her seventh-grade students is put under stress when a series of thefts occur at the school, and a staff investigation leads to accusations and mistrust among outraged parents, opinionated colleagues, and angry students. Caught in the middle of these complex dynamics, Carla tries to mediate … but the more she tries to do everything right, the more desperate her position becomes. The film has a wide release on January 19th, 2024.

"An enigmatic and hypnotic modern fairy tale." IFC Films has released a new official US trailer for the German indie romance film titled Undine, from filmmaker Christian Petzold. This originally premiered at last year's Berlin Film Festival, also where Paula Beer won the Silver Bear for Best Actress in this film. Beer stars as the titular Undine (based on the Undine myth), who works as a historian lecturing on Berlin's urban development. But when the man she loves leaves her... the ancient myth catches up with her. She must kill the man who betrays her and return to the water, but she also falls in love with him. Also with Franz Rogowski as her new lover, with Maryam Zaree, Jacob Matschenz, Anne Ratte-Polle, and Rafael Stachowiak. It's a very sweet film about love, I wrote a little review of it. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Christian Petzold's Undine,...

"You said you love me. For ever." The Match Factory has released a promo trailer for German film Undine, the latest from beloved German filmmaker Christian Petzold. Similar to the Colin Farrell film Ondine before it, this is based on the "Undine legend" and myth of the woman who must return to the water. Talented German actress Paula Beer stars as Undine, who works as a historian lecturing on Berlin's urban development. But when the man she loves leaves her, the ancient myth catches up with her. She must kill the man who betrays her and return to the water. Also with Franz Rogowski, Maryam Zaree, Jacob Matschenz, Anne Ratte-Polle, and Rafael Stachowiak. This plays more like a teaser than a full trailer, but I love the look so far. The film premieres at the Berlin Film Festival this month. Here's the first promo trailer for Christian Petzold's Undine, direct...

Tuesday, June 6, at 1 Pm, Plaza Frontenac Cinema
Israel; in Hebrew, English, German, and Polish with English subtitles; 110 minutes
Two sisters uncover their father’s secret past in the true story-based Israeli mystery Past Life, one of the films playing as part of the annual St. Louis Jewish Film Festival. The film is also set to return to the Plaza Frontenac Cinema on June 9 for a longer theatrical run.
The film is an intriguing look into Israel in the late 1970s, before the fall of the Berlin Wall and crumbling of European communism, when many survivors of the Holocaust did not speak about their wartime experiences as they focused on building their young nation.
In 1977, young Sephi Milch (Joy Rieger), an Israeli music student with a lovely soprano voice but ambitions to be a composer, travels to West Berlin for a concert with her school choir. After the concert, an elderly...

It’s 1977 and you’re the lead soprano in your first international concert. Rapturous applause and a flawless performance later you find yourself hobnobbing with classmates and audience members alike, the famed German composer Thomas Zielinski (Rafael Stachowiak) even enters to the crowd’s delight. But rather than let the electricity of the moment overwhelm you and bask in the glory of a successful evening, you can’t help noticing an older woman walking towards you with a scowl on her face. She asks your name, inquires whether your father is Dr. Baruch Milch (Doron Tavory), and subsequently grabs your arm while screaming in German about meeting the daughter of a murderer. Your name is Sephi Milch (Joy Rieger) and everything you’ve known about your parents is about to change.
You cannot deny the intrigue in what Avi Nesher has crafted with Past Life, a Holocaust film that takes...

Ziska Riemann's new punk-rock teenage angst movie, called Lollipop Monster, is about two German girls, Ari and Oona, that rebel against their unhappy home lives and "hunt" through the "jungle" of the city.
Throughout the film, the girls listen to their favorite rock band, and its leader, the voodoo-ish "Baron," while the music acts as a backdrop to their imaginary hunting trips through the jungle.
I love this kind of post-trainspotting, rebel-girl, Ghost World kind of music-driven film, especially when (as in this one) there appears to be a violent and bloody ending. The director, Riemann, has a background in animation, so I'd expect some of that in the film, as well as lots of music - she makes her own and directs her own music videos. Check out the stunning photos which show the awesome colors and characters by which the girls are surrounded.
This film will be out in Germany August 25th,...
