Laura Jarrett’s first day on the job started early this morning, well before you could even think about returning to the one you’ve held for months.
She joined co-anchor Christine Romans Thursday for the first time on “Early Start,” CNN’s entry in what has fast become a serious business matter: catching TV-news early birds. Despite the fact that the nation is just easing into a new year and the end of a holiday season, this morning’s news cycle was brutal. CNN had correspondents ready to hold forth from Jerusalem, Australia and Baghdad, as Romans and Jarrett ticked off critical events taking place around the globe.
Expect more activity in days ahead. “This news cycle, especially in January, is shaping up to be a little bit busy. We may well be covering an impeachment trial,” says Jarrett, 34 years old, in an interview. “People are waking up and...

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie said, in her jawdropping op-ed announcing that she'd had a preventive double mastectomy, that she hoped other women could benefit from her experience. Within hours, that hope was realized when CNN Early Start anchor Zoraida Sambolin announced that she, too, will be undergoing a double mastectomy. Sambolin posted a brief announcement on her Facebook page Tuesday morning, and later spoke on the air, with Carol Costello, about her own decision-making process, and her gratitude to Jolie for helping give her the opportunity to share the tough news.

CNN announced today that its moving hosts Kyra Phillips and Ashleigh Banfield to new time slots. Actually, in Phillips’ case, it’s a new network over on Hln. CNN is also putting former ABC News correspondent John Berman, who joined the network recently, on its Early Start show with Zoraida Sambolin. Berman will also contribute to CNN’s website and other shows. These changes come as CNN was hit with second quarter ratings that show the network falling to a 21-year primetime ratings low. Meanwhile, in the cable anchor musical chairs, Banfield is leaving the early early Am of Early Start, where she and Sambolin have been since November 2011, for CNN Newsroom. Banfield will now host the 11 Am spot for the network. Lastly, Phillips, who has been with CNN nearly 13 years, will leave the 11 Am Newsroom slot and move over to Hln where she will debut a new daytime show later this summer.

Unless you are being awakened with the news that you have just been nominated for an Oscar, it's safe to say that most people would not be happy to receive a random call at 5 in the morning. CNN apparently never got that memo, because, as Jon Stewart mocked on Tuesday's "Daily Show," the 5 a.m. CNN series "Early Start" includes a segment called "Wake 'Em Up," in which hosts Ashleigh Banfield and Zoraida Sambolin cold call famous people whose phone numbers they happen to have. One victim: Kerry Kennedy, daughter of...
