Sony Pictures is shuttering Sony Crackle in Canada: The ad-supported video service will be closing its doors in Canada on June 28. Crackle Canada has been telling consumers about the closure with a message posted on its website, and a Sony Crackle spokesperson confirmed the exit when contacted by Variety.
“As part of a recently announced partnership between Sony Pictures Television and Bell Media, some content that was available on Sony Crackle in Canada will be available on Bell Media’s new VOD services, CTV Movies and CTV Vault, later this year,” the spokesperson said via email. “Sony Crackle will continue to focus on its longform original content in the U.S. and Latin America. We want to thank the loyal viewers in Canada that have enjoyed our service throughout the years.”

Sony Pictures TV will undergo an unspecified number of layoffs as part of a divisional reorg, which will include the creation of a direct-to-consumer unit.
In a memo on the changes sent to staff on Wednesday morning, Sony Pictures TV Chairman Mike Hopkins (pictured above) outlined three areas to be reorganized. Hopkins said that the company will combine global networks operations and worldwide distribution/home etertainment into a single business unit that will then operate in a territory management model that “brings together, under a single local leader, businesses that have been historically separate.”
“With this approach, we gain a more efficient structure giving regional leaders, along with their direct reports in each country, the ability to make smart, strategic business decisions, while keeping local consumers at the core of what we do,” Hopkins said.

Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins is reorganizing a number of areas of the company, mostly on the distribution side.
After folding home video into worldwide distribution under Keith Le Goy in February, Hopkins now also is adding global networks operations, which had been reporting directly to him, to Le Goy’s portfolio. The combined global networks/worldwide distribution/home entertainment unit will operate in a territory management model; under which regional heads will have oversight of TV and home entertainment distribution, as well as Spt-owned networks in their respective territories.
Additionally, Hopkins, who was CEO of streaming platform Hulu before joining Sony TV last fall, is joining the other traditional studios like Disney, Warner Bros. CBS with a direct-to-consumer push. The company is creating a unit that combines all direct-to-consumer Sony properties, including Crackle, to be run by Eric Berger, Chief Digital Officer of Sony Pictures TV Networks.

Sony Pictures Television is streamlining its international TV operations, consolidating the management of its worldwide channels, home entertainment, and program sales activities under the leadership of Sony Pictures Entertainment distribution president Keith Le Goy.
The restructuring unveiled Wednesday will cost an undetermined number of jobs as the integration of three previously distinct divisions is completed. A handful of senior executive posts in international distribution have already been eliminated. The move to slim down Sony TV’s international ranks was signaled in February when the studio pink-slipped the leader of its networks unit, Andy Kaplan, and home video arm, Man Jit Singh.
The changes come as part of a broader overhaul of studio operations that Sony Pictures TV chairman Mike Hopkins has been hammering out with his boss, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Both Fox alums joined the studio last year.
The goal is to eliminate redundancies and de-silo Sony TV.

Crackle, the Sony-owned, ad-supported distributor of original web series, feature films, and television shows, is reportedly looking to foray into virtual reality. The company is currently working on Vr videos based on existing programming, Gm and Svp Eric Berger said at a Variety summit earlier this week. However, down the line, he said that Crackle would ready “direct to virtual reality programming” as well.
And ads inside of virtual reality content could look vastly different from ads that appear within traditional videos. Crackle is reportedly seeking to build interactive ad formats where “it’s as if the consumer actually steps into the ad,” Berger explained.

Crackle has an ambitious original series in the works. The digital platform owned by Sony Pictures Television will distribute Start Up, a drama starring Martin Freeman and Adam Brody.
In Start Up, Freeman will play an FBI agent whose hunt for a financial criminal leads him to Brody’s Nick Talman, who is investing dirty money in a tech startup. The show’s first season will include ten episodes, with each one running for one hour.

“The Art of More” is getting … more. Sony’s Crackle has renewed the Dennis Quaid one-hour drama for a second season less than two weeks after its series debut. Since the Nov. 19 premiere, “The Art of More” has earned 2 million views. More than half of those viewers were new to the free streaming network, Crackle said. “As our most ambitious series to date, ‘The Art of More’ is a brand-defining drama that speaks to Crackle’s mission to be a home to must-see original content,” said Eric Berger, general manager of Crackle and executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television.

This year, Sony's Crackle platform opted to present its upcoming original programming during TV's upfronts rather than the web's Digital Content Newfronts. In choose to align with TV, Crackle Gm Eric Berger cited content that is "long form and premium," which he believes most closely appeals to TV advertisers.
At Crackle's upfront presentation, it showed off some of this long form content. Among other new programs, Crackle will debut the feature film Joe Dirt 2 and its first hour-long series, The Art of More.
Crackle's plan to roll out a sequel to 2001 cult classic Joe Dirt has been in the works for two years, and during its latest presentation, the distributor revealed a July 16th release date for the David Spade comedy, which is billed as the "first ever made-for-digital sequel to a major motion picture."
Later in 2015, Joe Dirt 2 will be joined by two more brand new Crackle originals.

This year's edition of the Digital Content Newfronts will include more than 30 presenters, making this year's schedule the busiest one yet. At the same time, one company originally slated to present is changing its plans. Crackle, the digital video distributor owned by Sony, has dropped out of the Newfronts and will instead present during TV's upfronts in April.
Crackle, previously a regular presence at the Newfronts, was initially slated for the 12-2 Pm slot on April 29th, 2015. Instead, the Sony subsidiary will pitch its upcoming programming to advertisers on April 14th.“We feel that our content, which is long form and premium," Crackle Gm Eric Berger told the Wall Street Journal, is “akin to what brands are looking for from TV Networks so we’re aligning ourselves with that."

Sony Pictures continues to suffer fallout from a November cyber attack. When they aren't discussing Joel McHale's interest in a discounted Sony TV, emails leaked by hackers reveal some internal scheming related to Crackle, the online video platform owned by Sony. According to a November 3rd email, Sony considered selling a majority stake in Crackle to CAA's Evolution Media Capital firm. The email in question, as first reported by Bloomberg, was sent by Crackle Gm Eric Berger to Sony Pictures Television president Steve Mosko. Berger wrote that a sale could generate funds for original programming and marketing. In a separate email, Spt president of worldwide networks Andy Kaplan laid out a more specific plan. “If we sold 51%/control at a total valuation of $200 mi, for the sake of the example, we’d bring in $100 mil in cash and probably more importantly, book a gain of something like $125 mil," he wrote.

Sony’s Crackle has good reason to be happy it’s a streaming network right now. In a survey conducted with PlayStation and consulting firm Frank N. For the second year in a row, the three companies conducted the “New Living Room” study in July 2014. They provided an online survey to 1200 adults between the ages of 18 and 49, and found 61% of them stream weekly (up from last year’s 44%), with 72% of millenials streaming each week as opposed to only 52% of them from last year. Crackle, PlayStation, and Magid also found consumers now default to streaming devices and apps connected to a TV (such as set-top boxes and gaming consoles) 62% of the time, instead of using a computer (48%), phone (23%), or tablet (28%). “Last year, we saw that streaming video on connected TV devices was outpacing all...

The first season, which played out like a pulse-pounding blend of A History of Violence and Wanted, ended on a mild cliffhanger, as a final reveal hinted that more angry people with guns will soon be chasing after Ian. It's a sure-footed formula that plays well to the plentiful action-hungry crowd. The first season will remain available on Crackle's various outlets until May. Embedding is disabled, but you can check out all six episodes here. Chosen pulled in only 48% of its streams from 'online' viewers. The series took great advantage of new media outlets, scoring...

Just as Mitch Hurwitz, Jim Vallely, and Dean Lorey begin writing the new 10-episode season of the once-cancelled-and-recently-internet-greenlit Fox television show Arrested Development (scheduled to air on Netflix sometime in 2013), Crackle greenlights another entrant into the Long-Form-Content-of-Television-Quality-but-Distributed-Online fray. Andrew Wallenstein at Variety reports the digital network, studio, and destination for television programs, movies, and a healthy amount of original web series just ordered six episodes of a half-hour anthology series dubbed The Unkown. Sons of Anarchy producer Chris Collins and the Co-Head of Fox Writers Studio Steve Tzirlin are on board to executive produce. The Unkown will be in the vein of The X-Files, Creepshow, and/or Twilight Zone and is scheduled scheduled to go into production in March for a 2012 release. That’s almost a full year after Eric Berger, Executive Vice President of Digital Networks at Sony Pictures Television, announced Crackle would make a pivot into long-form, but still male-leaning programming.

Rumors had been circling of a retreat from web originals over at Sony’s 4-year-old online video network Crackle, as the usually heavy flow of short-form web series that would be its bread and butter over the past few years had dried to a trickle. Previous short-form (sub 10-min episode) web tentpoles like The Bannen Way, Angel of Death and Jailbait had found a business a morphing themselves into whatever medium was buying. But not enough to greenlight dozens of them this year. Then comes a bit of a bombshell yesterday afternoon in Variety, as Eric Berger, Executive VP of digital networks at Sony Pictures Television who oversees Crackle and other properties, announced the network was moving to a long-form strategy. It’s a pivot for the network, citing a shift in the marketplace and amongst its own audience who had grown fond of the site’s heavy helpings of...
