Following the rare privilege of a public premiere and a three-week cinema release at the Archlight Cinema, part of the iconic Battersea Power Station complex in London. As the opening credits consume the screen, goosebumps of excitement emerge for fans of the sci-fi genre. We are immediately thrown into a dystopian world beautifully created by director, and first-time writer, Ravi Ajit Chopra. From bio-tech chips in necks, soldiers in strict formation and sophisticated spaceships, the intricate details and care given to this aesthetic are apparent from the short film’s first frame.
We land on Planet Vega and launch into a charming father/son relationship, which seems somewhat too idyllic in this setting. On some level, deep in the pit of your stomach, you know something is going to ruin this heartwarming moment. As they battle the elements, young Abner is taken by ‘Storm trooper’ like rangers and whisked away to a brutal world of regimented training (Ender’s Game springs to mind). Last Sunday, Cine-Vue was lucky enough to be invited along to the final day of the 2011 London Short Film Festival at London's ultra-stylish Institute of Contemporary Arts. The 10 day annual event which took place from the 7 to 16 January has been responsible for championing some of the finest, most innovative shorts from some truly talented upcoming film makers.
Formed in 2003 by Philip Ilson and Kate Taylor and initially under the guise of the first Halloween Short Film Festival (a continuation of The Halloween Short Film Club which Ilson had been programming since 1994), the London Short Film Festival reached the form we see today in 2008 and has been growing year on year to take in more films, live music, industry and training and diverse, high quality venues.
