Last month, we learned that Lionsgate is funding a horror film based on the novel Creepers (pick up a copy Here) by First Blood author David Morrell. At the time, it was said that Skylan Brooks (The Darkest Minds) would be one of the film’s cast members – but Deadline reports that Brooks is no longer involved with the project. Taking over the role he was going to play is Shane Paul McGhie, who is best known for playing the role of Landon in After and After We Collided. (McGhie then passed the role over to Chance Perdomo for After We Fell.)
Creepers tells the story of
a group of young urban explorers who plan to investigate an old, boarded up, seemingly abandoned hotel, only to encounter danger at every turn in the form of a competing group of hostile urban explorers seeking to find a legendary hidden treasure as...

With the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival now officially wrapped, after making history for being the first in-person film festival since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown, the genre movies it premiered are also noteworthy, particularly for their relatable characters and vital themes. No Man of God, No Running, and Settlers are all remarkable thrillers for their powerful messages of people standing up for, and not backing down from, what they believe in.
No Man of God: Biographical crime thrillers that chronicle the cases of real-life serial killers often sensationalize the criminal’s crime spree in order to shock their audiences. But director Amber Sealey’s new movie No Man of God is a stunning and welcome entry in the genre, as it instead chooses to study the full spectrum of the human condition following the murders committed by notorious serial killer, Ted Bundy.

Adam Egypt Mortimer made quite a splash last year with his first film, Daniel Isn’t Real, the story of a young man with a murderous invisible friend, and now he’s back with Archenemy, proving that it’s possible to tell superhero stories on a small budget. When we meet I tell him that I like the latter because of its shaggy dog tale quality, beginning when a man walks into a bar, and the idea that you can be a superhero in one universe and an old drunk homeless guy in another. Was that where it began?
“Yeah, that was exactly where it started,” says Adam with a grin. “It started with the image of a man in a shitty bar drinking whiskey, but he's wearing a tattered superhero cape. That exact image isn't in the movie, but that basically is the whole movie.

A man walks into a bar. His clothes are battered, his hair is unkempt and he has probably smelled better. "I used to be a superhero," he says, and tells a fantastic tale in exchange for bourbon. But what if it's true?
Belief in heroes is something that society tends to knock out of us, and more so in some places than in others. This city is tough, grimy and crime-ridden. Its streets are full of homeless people with bizarre interpretations of what's happening around them. Despite all this, young Hamster (Skylan Brooks) has somehow managed to hold onto his belief. He wants to be a writer and as such, he remains open to people's stories. He listens to the ragged stranger as nobody else has done - learns that his name is Max Fist and that, apparently he found himself trapped in this universe after gong all out to save.

Following last year’s brain bending, psychedelic fantasy thriller Daniel Isn’t Real, writer/director Adam Egypt Mortimer hot-footed it back into production for his follow-up, Archenemy, a dazzlingly delirious part urban crime drama bolstered by cosmic action and funky, interdimensional superhero bedlam.
Teen wannabe crime reporter Hamster (Skylan Brooks) happens upon a haphazard hobo, Max Fist (Joe Manganiello) who claims to be a cosmic warrior from another dimension. After being dispelled to another reality by archenemy Cleo (Amy Seimetz), Fist finds himself homeless and without powers so sunk into a self-destructive coil of booze and drug abuse, until he meets Hamster.

Joe Manganiello is a great-looking guy. “Overwhelmingly handsome” describes Adam Egypt Mortimer, who directed the actor in the dark superhero film “Archenemy,” available now on-demand. Mortimer says disrupting Manganiello’s appearance — as well as superhero film norms — is what makes “Archenemy” stand apart from other projects in the genre.
In “Archenemy,” Manganiello plays Max Fist, a disheveled homeless man who claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to Earth, where he has no powers. Max teams up with a local teen named Hamster (Skylan Brooks) to wipe out the local drug syndicate.
“This is a character that you simultaneously believe that he is Superman; he has the strength, the incredible handsomeness, the heroic vibe. But he is also completely broken and degraded. Joe and I were really into deconstructing his look, f–king up his teeth, getting him scraggly and growing a beard that his wife [actress Sofia Vergara] really hated,...

Over the last few years, it’s been fun to watch filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer’s career evolve from films like Some Kind of Hate to Daniel Isn’t Real to his contribution in the anthology film Holidays. And now his latest, Archenemy, has Mortimer traversing new cinematic terrain with his story of an interdimensional superhero named Max Fist (played by Joe Manganiello) who finds himself down on his luck here on planet Earth, and must confront his past so that he can put an end to the reign of tyranny that his sworn enemy, Cleo (Amy Seimetz), is prepared to unleash on our planet.
Archenemy also stars Skylan Brooks, Zolee Griggs, Glenn Howerton, and Paul Scheer and will be released in theaters, on digital, and on demand today, courtesy of Rlje Films.

As eager comic movie fans wait for Marvel to roll out Phase Four, or for Wonder Woman 1984 to hit HBO Max; Rjle Films has a superhero sleeper of its own coming to screens on Dec. 11. Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Archenemy is the story of Max Fist (Joe Manganiello), a one-person crime fighting phenomenon, now powerless and sent to our dimension to live on the streets. Though Max’s homeless life might be bleak and muted, the film is full of colorful and outrageous characters. The larger-than-life menace that looms over Max is “The Manager”. A mustachioed, golden blonde Glenn Howerton brings this 21st century crime boss to life. Think of him as Michael Corleone, by way of Urban Outfitters.
Stepping into the shoes of an overbearing, take no prisoners, big bad is a new venture for Howerton. It didn’t deter him one bit though, as we learned in our...

Director Adam Egypt Mortimer explores his obsession with the cosmos in his third feature, Archenemy, starring Joe Manganiello as a maybe/possibly superhero from outer space drunkenly stumbling through LA's skid row in search of his nemesis. A kind of mumblecore sci-fi/fantasy/action hybrid that keeps its audience guessing at the reliability of its protagonist's point of view while delivering solid action and a trip through Los Angeles' seedy drug trafficking underworld. When a teenager named Hamster - played by Skylan Brooks (The Darkest Minds) - desperate to break into the internet journalism game runs into a beefy but grizzled drunk drifter calling himself Max Fist (Manganiello), he smells a viral hit. Fist doles out wild stories about his descent from the planet Chromia, his apocalyptic battle...

Superhero movies have become so pervasive since the turn of the millennium that they’ve spurred a whole subgenre of films subverting their formulas — primarily low-budget efforts like “Special,” “Super” and “Defendor,” but also major-studio projects “Joker” and “Hancock.” All share an interest in peeling back the mask, exploring the antisocial, delusional-fantasy side of superpowers.
Adam Egypt Mortimer’s third feature “Archenemy” occupies similar terrain, resourcefully using modest means to create a gritty yet stylized comic-book world in which a supposed fallen superhero may really just be some homeless guy with mental issues. However, that colorful surface is more successfully drawn than the characters and complications meant to fill it, leaving this noirish, (mostly) live-action cartoon feeling less like a dissection of superhero origin stories than an underdeveloped prologue to one.
It has its own prologue, marking the first of several sharp animated sequences credited to Sunando, Kevin Finnegan and Danny Perez.

Sharing DNA with everything from The Terminator and contemporary superhero films to The Fisher King and Liquid Television, Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Archenemy is named for a villain who may exist only in the mind of a homeless schizophrenic. Joe Manganiello plays that man, who calls himself Max Fist and claims to be a hero who got stuck on our Earth after saving all life in some other dimension; that claim’s truth may or may not matter to the aspiring blogger (Skylan Brooks) who wants to ride Fist’s boasts to viral fame. Give Max Fist (Joe Manganiello) a fifth of whiskey and he’ll tell you about the alternate dimension that holds his home city of Chromium. He was a hero there: indestructible, revered, and fearless when confronted by the evil Cleo (Amy Seimetz) and her apocalyptic weapons. It was her “void machine” that ultimately banished him to our version of Earth after he ripped a hole in space-time to detonate it between realities and save mankind. His “reward” was an eternity in purgatory unless he could grab ahold of another dimension and pull his way through. Doing so unfortunately meant the mystical blue blood that made him whole, super strong, and able to fly after losing his arm there no longer existed. Suddenly he was human again, lost and alone.

In his new indie film “Archenemy,” Joe Manganiello steps into the shoes of a man who claims he was a superhero — but his character, Max Fist, isn’t the sort of guy who’d make Superman proud.
Instead, he’s an alcoholic, drug-addicted homeless man who claims he’s been stripped of his powers after being hurdled through time and space by his titular archenemy, Cleo (Amy Seimetz). It’s a full deconstruction of the superhero genre, complete with a plucky kid reporter (Skylan Brooks) — except, in a modern twist, he’s instead an aspiring social media influencer — and his sister (Zolee Griggs), who finds herself in over her head in her dealings with the local crime boss (Glenn Howerton).

"I used to punch holes through space-time!" Holy hell this looks badass! Rlje Films has revealed a full-length trailer for a gritty new genre film titled Archenemy, which premiering at Beyond Fest this month. This film is the latest creation from Daniel Isn't Real director Adam Egypt Mortimer, billed as intriguing superhero sci-fi action adventure horror crime thriller (aka a genre mashup!). We posted the teaser trailer earlier in the year, but this new trailer packs quite a punch (literally). Joe Manganiello stars as Max Fist, and he claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to Earth. But here he has no powers. No one believes his stories except for local teen Hamster, played by Skylan Brooks. This also stars Glenn Howerton, Zolee Griggs, Joseph D. Reitman, and Amy Seimetz. I dig the gritty, brutal style and all of Manganiello's lines. I bet...

Adam Egypt Mortimer's third film Archenemy, starring Joe Manganiello, will have its world premiere during the Fuck Covid Edition of this year's Beyond Fest on October 7th. Rlje Films have already picked up the film for North American distribution and plan to put Archenemy out in cinemas (!?!) and on digital platforms in December. So that must mean that it is time for the official trailer to drop an elbow and give us an idea as to what Mortimer has in store for us. But first, can we take a moment to say how amazing this poster is? Crazy good, right? Now this trailer, yo. Manganiello looks in top form. It's cool to see Skylan Brooks here, we liked him in The Get Down. Looking...

Writer/director Adam Egypt Mortimer really impressed me with last year's Daniel Isn't Real which provided an interesting new take on a familiar story and delivered it with an assurance of a seasoned filmmaker.
I was already predisposed to being excited for his new feature but Archenemy, which stars Hollywood's favourite dungeon master Joe Manganiello as Max Fist, a drunk who claims to be a super hero from another dimension who has fallen to Earth and lost his powers. Most people ignore his stories as grand tales or wishful thinking from a washout; everyone except for Hamster (Skylan Brooks), a local teen convinced that Max is telling the truth and the pair team-up to clean up the streets.
The film also stars Zolee Griggs, Amy Seimetz, and Glenn Howerton.

In “Archenemy,” Joe Manganiello plays Max Fist, who claims he’s a hero from another dimension who has somehow landed on Earth and been stripped of his powers. In other superhero movies, that might be the start of a rousing and upbeat redemption arc. In the hands of the producers of the gonzo art horror film “Mandy,” it’s something else entirely.
As the first trailer for the film makes clear, writer-director Adam Egypt Mortimer is using Max Fist to take a darker and grittier approach to the superhero genre.
Instead of treating him like a powerful champion, no one believes Max’s claims — except for a teenager named Hamster and his sister Indigo. The siblings convince Max to help them take out a local drug gang, where Max’s abilities are put to a violent and harrowing test.
