Breakups and bushfires derail festivities in this overly sentimental film, starring a likable Heather Mitchell as the matriarch trying to hold it all together

A family get-together in the middle of nowhere in stinking hot weather, with bonbons and pavlova and a car out front attached to a trailer – yep, this is a bloody ’Strayan Christmas movie.
Expect gentle giggles rather than guffaws from Stan’s yuletide offering from the director Stef Smith and the writer Tegan Higginbotham: an upbeat Chrissy-gone-wrong dramedy that works best in a modest key, hinged on interpersonal dynamics and situational humour, rather than the poignantly and powerfully atmospheric work it longs to be and falls well short of.

For writer and director Stef Smith, creating short-form project 'It's Fine, I'm Fine' - about to premiere at Canneseries - was an attempt to get out of what she calls the "credit desert".
That is, it was a bid, for both herself and her fellow collaborators, to obtain the kind of credit that could see them escape the sticky "emerging" label.

Dop Emma Paine with Laura Nagy on the set of ‘Hook Up’ (Photo credit: Narika Mckenzie)
Laura Nagy first met Ian Collie when she was a casting coordinator on Doctor Doctor and he later hired her as his assistant at Essential Media in 2017.
Spotting her potential, Collie asked Laura to follow him and colleagues Rachael Turk and Tanya Phegan when he departed to launch Easy Tiger in 2018.
He then asked the emerging filmmaker to join the Easy Tiger development team, where the 2010 Aftrs graduate is nurturing several projects. “Laura is an absolute gem and multi-skilled – a filmmaker in her own right,” Collie tells If.
Laura says: “I am queer and I started writing those stories because a lot of it was exploring things I felt in my real life and wasn’t necessarily talking about.
“Once I started doing it, it got easier and people keep asking me to do it,...
