- Band's name is taken from the title of a 1966 novel by Willard Manus.
- The group formed in Herefordshire in 1969 and released their eponymous debut album. In 1971, their enthusiastic fans caused thousands of pounds of damage to the Royal Albert Hall, contributing to the venue's ban on rock and pop concerts. The following year, weak record sales meant they were on the verge of breaking up, when fan David Bowie persuaded them to stay together. Their single All The Young Dudes, written by David Bowie, was a big hit. However, the band split up in 1974 when lead singer Ian Hunter left the band.
- Mentioned in the 1974 song "Life Is a Rock but the Radio Rolled Me" by Reunion.
