An affluent young couple awaken a vengeful spirit in a by-the-numbers chiller conceived under pandemic conditions
Some day there will be PhD theses written on the strange anomie of films shot during the pandemic, written so everything basically happens in one house using just a handful of actors. There have already been scads of low-budget horror films in this mode which have trickled out over the last few months, and some are quite interesting and inventive. This one, not so much.
A good-looking young couple, Brad (Taye Diggs) and Jess (Jessica Uberuaga), have just bought a house somewhere in the hills above California’s San Fernando Valley. Seen often via drone footage, it is an oddly constructed abode that looks like a cross between geodesic dome and an egg incubator. Meanwhile, the camera spends a lot of time roaming the building’s corridors and empty rooms, like we’re watching...

Mammon is a haunted house thriller. From production company Ton of Hats, this title is currently in post-production. A blend of horror and mystery, Mammon's story involves a young couple and their new home. The house has a demonic spirit, living in the walls. And, this spirit can only be removed with a hefty price. As well, Isaac Walsh (Rook) developed this feature, which stars: Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Taye Diggs and Jessica Uberuaga. The film's early concept artwork is here, along with a few more story details. The concept poster shows the young couple: Brad (Diggs) and Jess (Uberuaga). In their new home with candlelight, they have no idea what is in store for them. Meanwhile, a predatory bird hovers darkly in the background. This graphic portends the dark forces within. Mammon also has a moral tale. A mammon is a spirit that lures people through the vice of greed.

Prominently placed at the start of a very long final credit crawl is what may go down in motion picture history as one of the most misguided displays of somber self-congratulation ever: “John Travolta Is Moose. ‘The Fanatic.’ A Fred Durst Film.” Given that this is a movie that starts with an onscreen-text quote from its own bad dialogue, the clueless hubris is no longer surprising by that point. Still,
For starters, it is the worst Travolta vehicle in some time, and coming just a year after the double whammy of “Gotti” and “Speed Kills,” that is really saying something. It also finds him entering that unfortunate pantheon of presumably well-intentioned performances of differently-abled characters that somehow emerge a compendium of the most cringe-inducing clichés of people with limited faculties.

Write what you know, they say. But because Fred Durst once had a bad experience with a stalker, we now get the rank human patty that is the Limp Bizkit frontman and sometime director’s latest indulgence “The Fanatic,” a celebrity-terrorizing scenario that wants to be “Misery” but only creates misery.
Durst didn’t necessarily embarrass himself 10 years ago when he released his directorial debut, the admirably sensitive college drama “The Education of Charlie Banks”; he didn’t write the film, nor did his effort suggest hidden reserves of cinematic promise. “The Fanatic,” however, which Durst did have a hand in writing, is a brainless, exploitative folly which gives John Travolta free rein to mine the history of cringe-worthy autism portrayals for an offensively garish Frankenstein pantomime of unhinged obsession. It ultimately suggests this side-career of Durst’s should be well and truly snuffed out.
Travolta plays a childlike ultra-fan called The Moose,...
