There has always been something rather Hawksian about Steven Soderbergh. Speaking with the French magazine Positif in 1993, Soderbergh actually brought up Howard Hawks, a venerable icon of Hollywood cinema, stating, “The career I would like is John Huston’s or Howard Hawks’s. You know, very varied, many different subjects.” It’s true Soderbergh and Hawks diverge greatly in terms of form—the latter is straightforward, classically composed, no frills; the former is stylish, spontaneous, technically innovative—but their recurring subject matter, with a little stretching, isn’t far removed. Take the focus on working professionals in Traffic (2000), the Ocean’s films (2001, ‘04, ‘07), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), and Magic Mike (2012); though not exactly traditional Hawksian occupations, there is a firm appreciation for a job to do and to be done well. More than that, though, what connects Howard Hawks and Steven Soderbergh is their uniform consistency, not necessarily in terms of year-after-year quantity,...

In its penultimate, heart-breaking episode, Better Call Saul season 3 utterly destroys our empathy for Jimmy...

3.9 Fall
Something had to give.
In the world of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul there are always consequences, and as our central characters surpassed making the wrong choices for the right reasons and stepped on to the slippery slope that nobody is about the emerge unscathed from, the first real victim of it all is Kim Wexler. Kim, who has maintained her decency despite it all, Kim who attempted to stay in Jimmy’s orbit without falling under his sway. And no; she’s not facing a destroyed reputation due to her connections with him or a violent attacker, rather it was her self-admitted fallacy of sunk costs that made things take a very bad turn for her.

Last Week’S Review: Set-Ups and Slip-Ups Abound in the Beginning of the End
Case Summary
Jimmy may not be practicing law, but he hasn’t forgotten about his clients — specifically those involved in the Sandpiper case, which he’s surprised to discover hasn’t been settled yet. Desperate for the cash, he first tries confronting Hamlin over the lack of a settlement… but is eventually reduced to manipulating the elderly in order to get what he wants. It is… not a proud moment for him.
Meanwhile, Chuck and Howard finally have the confrontation that Howard’s clearly been wanting to have since Chuck’s breakdown during Jimmy’s hearing, spurred on by the malpractice insurance issue. But it goes sideways on him, because Chuck refuses to retire quietly, and is now planning on suing Hh&M. Maybe it’s what Chuck thinks is the right thing to do, but...

Amitabha Singh’s directorial debut Shortcut Safaari, starring Jimmy Sheirgill and an ensemble of kids, is gearing up for release this Friday. Jimmy, who essays the role of a chief, has a small yet pivotal part in the film.
Jimmy may not have been the original choice for Amitabha, but he has been the ultimate option for the filmmaker. Amitabha may have mulled over a few options, from actors like Naseeruddin Shah to Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan, but he eventually settled for Jimmy Sheirgill. And now he reveals us how Jimmy perfectly fit the bill.
“I was considering quite a few options, right from Nana Patekar and Naseeruddin to Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan to Boman Irani. The initial idea was to have a grandfather figure, but eventually I realised that it needs to be like elder brother or younger uncle kind of a figure, who can actually throw...

A review of tonight's Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I tune into Diagnosis: Murder sometime this morning between 11:18 and 11:35... "But you're the one who made him this way." -Kim Walter White has yet to appear on Better Call Saul, and the most the show would likely be able to do with him is a brief (and likely more distracting than it's worth) cameo where one of the show's supporting characters bumps into an aggrieved local high school science teacher. But if Walt's doesn't particularly belong on this show, his spirit very much hangs over it — not only because we know that Jimmy and Mike are both doomed to get tangled up in his business, but because we keep seeing them make mistakes we know all too well from our days watching Breaking Bad. This is particularly apparent in season 2's penultimate chapter, "Nailed," where...

Would Better Call Saul's Jimmy have become Breaking Bad's Saul Goodman if his brother Chuck had believed in him?
This review contains spoilers.
2.5 Rebecca
Jimmy McGill should be happy. He should be counting his lucky stars. He knows this better than anyone and with every reminder he gets, from Kim’s withering admonishments to his run-in with a hapless former colleague at the court who could not be more jealous of Jimmy’s newfound legitimacy we can see his misery grow. What happens if you get everything you want right after you lose the very reason you wanted it? Season two of Better Call Saul has examined this to great effect; Jimmy’s initial discomfort at Davis and Main led to the huge mistake that turned his job from a poor fit into an outright trap. Underlings are hounding him about his failure to adhere...

Better Call Saul displays complete mastery of prequel storytelling in season 2. Here's our review of latest episode, Gloves Off...
This review contains spoilers.
2.4 Gloves Off
There are a lot of things Better Call Saul deserves praise for, but one often overlooked element is just how well it understands the mechanics of a good prequel. Every time a story set before another story is released it always poses the question; what’s the point? When we know how this ends, why waste our time? It’s exactly this element that Better Call Saul has used to its advantage, and as if to underline this triumph, the show has produced an episode that basically illustrates exactly how it has done this in microcosm.
We start with a classic cold open. Mike limps into his house, looking weary and worse for wear. He deposits an envelope of money on his desk,...

“Sg Was Here”
It starts and ends with the same conundrum. When the rules say no to us, whether it’s an alarmed security door barring our escape or a seemingly purposeless warning label on an otherwise normal light switch, what do we do, and why? How do we maintain our identities in a world trying to make our own decisions for us at every turn? Better Call Saul spends its second season’s first hour chewing that increasingly bitter cud, trying to masticate an answer out of life and coming away with frightened avoidance, pointless defiance, and a sad, frustrated man carving a name he doesn’t dare tell anyone is his into a concrete wall across from a Dumpster.
The events of last season taught Jimmy just how little gain there is in following the rules for their own sake. He lives in a closet, his brother thinks he’s a joke,...
