Gery L. Deer
Gery L. Deer was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1967 and grew up in the nearby
farm community of Jamestown. He began his career in the entertainment
as a 16-year-old restaurant pianist. Having never properly learned to
read sheet music, Gery played entirely by ear. As his musical skills
grew, so did his abilities with a bullwhip. Growing up on the family
cattle farm, Gery learned to use the whip to perform various,
non-animal related, tasks, such as cutting weeds from electric fencing.
Within a few years, he was being asked to perform with his whip at
local fairs and festivals eventually landing in Las Vegas to compete in
the 2001 international whip speed and accuracy competitions. Taking
home a 2nd place award, Gery continued to perform, developing his own
style modeled after his mentor, friend and film idol, legendary
stuntman Alex Green. He has appeared in many film and television
projects, providing whip stunts, coaching and bullwhip holstering
equipment. In 2003, he provided the whip holsters and other accessories
to the Universal Studios Film, "The Rundown," featuring Dwayne "The
Rock" Johnson. He has appeared on several national and local television
programs including The Bonnie Hunt Show, Steve Harvey's Big Time
Challenge and America's Got Talent. Gery also worked on several
independent films as writer, producer, stunt performer and more,
including,"The Overman," a film by author/producer Rich Hoffman. The
5-minute short won the 2009 Best Experimental Micro Film Award at the
Indie Gathering Film Conference in Cleveland, Ohio
