- Father of two sons, Michael Anderson and Eugene Anderson. He is survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
- In 1982, he opened the Velvet Lounge Music Club in South-side Chicago, Illinois where he was owner until his death.
- In 1965, he was a founder with the pianist Muhal Richard Abrams and others of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago, Illinois.
- He recorded more than two dozen albums with musicians including saxophonist Joseph Jarman, trombonist George Lewis, and drummer Chad Taylor among them.
