- American gangster, bootlegger and killer in the 1920s and 1930s. There were so many assassination attempts against him--rival gangster Dutch Schultz once fumed, "Ain't there nobody that can shoot this guy so he don't bounce back?"--that he became known as "The Clay Pigeon of the Underworld". On Dec. 18, 1931, two hitmen shot and killed him in his room at a hotel in Albany, NY.
