On Friday, July 8, Oprah Winfrey's father, Vernon Winfrey, died at the age of 88. Oprah posted a tribute to her father on Saturday, celebrating his life and sharing the sad news of his death with her fans. Vernon was a Nashville businessman and barber who died after a battle with cancer.

Vernon Winfrey, the father to Oprah Winfrey and a former member of the Metro Nashville Council, died Friday after facing a recent illness. He was 89 years old.
Oprah Winfrey confirmed the death of her father through a statement on Instagram, sharing a recent video of Vernon Winfrey at an Independence Day backyard barbecue that took place at his own residence. Alongside his friends and family, Vernon was saluted by gospel singer Wintley Phipps, who performed a song for him.

Broadcast and cable networks aired the ceremony, and further coverage this week as Lewis lies in state at the Capitol on Monday and Tuesday. His body then will be flown to Georgia on Wednesday, where he will lie in state at the state Capitol, before a funeral on Thursday in Atlanta.
