The Smithsonian Museum has commissioned a series of eight forward-looking shorts exploring social justice issues facing diverse communities across the U.S. to screen as part of its major upcoming November “Futures” exhibition.
“Futures We Dream” consists of new works created over the past year by nine independent filmmakers selected via a partnership with the non-profit Alliance for Media Arts + Culture.

“Crip Camp” leads all films in nominations for the 36th annual IDA Documentary Awards, the International Documentary Association announced on Tuesday.
The film by directors Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht deals with a New York summer camp in the early 1970s that became a key launching pad for the disability rights movement. It was an opening-night film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the documentary audience award.
“Crip Camp” received five IDA doc awards nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Writing. Four films received three nominations each: Sam Pollard’s “MLK/FBI,” Garrett Bradley’s “Time,” Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw’s “The Truffle Hunters” and Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed’s “My Octopus Teacher,” the only film whose three nominations did not include the Best Feature category.

The International Documentary Association has announced the nominees for its 36th Annual IDA Documentary Awards, and a certain streaming service dominates. Netflix scored a leading 18 noms for the 2020 IDAs, more than three times its nearest rival. PBS is second with five, followed by HBO (four).
The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).

Universal Pictures is developing the thriller “Atlantis with “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow and his Metronome Film Co. with Trevorrow directing and producing.
The project is based on a story about the mythical city of Atlantis by Trevorrow and Matt Charman. Dante Harper, who wrote the original spec script that became Tom Cruise’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” will write the script for “Atlantis.”
Metronome and Universal are also collaborating on “Space Opera,” a musical with producer Marc Platt based on Catherynne Valente’s book.
Treverrow’s directing credits include “Safety Not Guaranteed,” “The Book of Henry” and the upcoming “Jurassic World: Dominion.” The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Mike Attie and Meghan O'Hara's surprisingly contemplative documentary In Country considers a group of men who re-create the Vietnam War for days at a time in Oregon. They aren't performing for an audience, like Civil War re-enactors; it's more like live-action role-playing (LARPing), choosing random cards to determine their fate in battles. Historical recreations of war are nothing new, but usually it’s the wars of the distant past that are being replicated: the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and so on. In Salem, Oregon though, a group men take their replicated guns, army surplus and fatigues and head into the woods to re-create what most would consider one of the least heroic chapters in American history, Vietnam. A total of 19 up-and-coming players in the European creative documentary have been selected for the second edition of the Emerging Producers platform during this year’s Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (Oct 24-29).
The 2013 line-up includes:

Filmmakers looking to get in front of the documentary world's heavy hitters in an idyllic coastal Maine town should look no further than the Camden International Film Festival's Points North Pitch. And for the first year ever, Ciff is offering the winner of Indiewire's Ciff Project of the Week a travel stipend and accommodations during the festival! Last year, the pitch, which included Phil Engelhorn (Cinereach), Judith Helfand (Chicken + Egg Pictures), Brian Newman (Sub-genre), Daniel Chalfen (independent producer), Beth Janson (Tribeca Film Institute), Christopher Hastings (Wgbh) and more, opened up to filmmakers beyond New England. The 2012 Camden Points North Pitch winners were "In Country" filmmakers Mike Attie and Meghan O'Hara. Attie told Indiewire, "We were initially not sure, but once we saw a list of the panelists -- Judith Helfand, Simon Kilmurry, Daniel Chalfen, Phil Englehorn -- we knew it would be a good opportunity. But the event itself exceeded.

This past weekend at the Camden International Film Festival, Mike Attie and Meghan O'Hara's pitch for their Vietnam War reenactor film "In Country," came out as the Points North Pitch winner. The pair's film was up against seven other projects, including Ben Niles' "Some Kind of Spark," which won Indiewire and Ciff's Project of the Week contest this September. After expanding the Pitch contest to documentary filmmakers from across the U.S. (previously, the Pitch was only open to projects from New England-based filmmakers), Points North Producer Sean Flynn said the number of applicants doubled. Attie, in fact, is from Seattle, and O'Hara is based in San Francisco.
