On August 4, 1953, Mr. Glassell caught a 1,560 lb. (707.61 kg) black marlin off the coast of Cabo Blanco, Peru. According to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the catch is a world record in two categories: All-Tackle and Line Class (Conventional Tackle). Film footage of one of his catches appears in The Old Man and the Sea (1958). Glassell served as a special advisor for the film. The black marlin is on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Houston, Texas.
