Only six visitors per day, per the artist’s wishes, are permitted to visit the City, Michael Heizer’s monumental land sculpture in the Nevada desert, which finally opened to the public in September — after 50 years of construction. A mile and a half by a mile wide, it’s been called the largest contemporary artwork ever created.

To get to the City is a pilgrimage; to view it, life-changing; to understand it, a form of mental sublimation, or so it has been said. Sign me up. On a chilly Thursday in October, I drive about 90 miles to the dusty cattle town of Alamo in southern Nevada, known for its placement off the Extraterrestrial Highway and proximity to the famed Area 51 and the Nevada National Security Site. Co-chaired by Lacma trustee Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio, the event was attended by more than 650 prominent guests from the art, film, fashion, and entertainment industries, among others. This year’s event raised $5 million to support Lacma’s film initiatives, as well as future exhibitions, acquisitions, and programming. Returning once again as presenting sponsor of the Art+Film Gala, Gucci expanded its longstanding and generous partnership with the museum by supporting Lacma’s presentation of The Obama Portraits Tour and the companion exhibition Black American Portraits. Audi provided additional support for the gala for the third year.

Five Inspirations is a series in which we ask directors to share five things that shaped and informed their film. Dea Kulumbegashvili's Beginning is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting January 29, 2021. Above: BeginningINSPIRATION #1For the soundscape for the film: While working on a film I was mentally and emotionally returning to the painting of Hans Holbein the Younger's The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb. What would we hear if this painting had sound? What are the sounds of the exterior world that come inside the tomb and what is the texture of the “silence” inside the tomb? With the sound designer of the film, Séverin Favriau, I first shared this image as the starting point for creating the soundscape for the film… …and the birds that came to drink water every evening to the well next to the editing room in Mexico. Those birds...

Dawn City: Frozen Time“A place is thus an instantaneous configuration of positions. It implies an indication of stability. A space exists when one takes into consideration vectors of direction, velocities, and time variables… Every story is a travel story, a spatial practice."—Michel de Certeau, The Practice of Everyday LifeTime is the central tenet of all cinema. The impression of its passing is the enthralling illusion at the medium’s flickering heart; petrified images are reanimated by the whirr of the projector. Even at its most micro level cinema traverses the intersection of time and place, as the static location of a single picture is temporally transported before our eyes by the flurry of subsequent frames. On a macro level, that relationship and those concepts are no less pervasive or vital. In 2006, found footage filmmaker Bill Morrison told Senses of Cinema that: "for better or worse, the projector is...

Focusing on Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria and Michael Heizer, this documentary explores the artists who decided to make huge works in the open air – a modern-day equivalent of Stonehenge
Early in James Crump’s Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art one of his talking-head subjects, Charles Ross, reminisces back to the early 1970s to tell how he picked the location for his site-specific earthwork sculpture Star Axis. When the movie ends we learn that 40 years later, Star Axis is still a work in progress. These people are not fooling around.
Beginning in the late 1960s, a group of artists got the itch to find a larger canvas and sling a little mud at the established gallery structure. Heading west, these likeminded pioneers traded paintbrushes for heavy machinery, creating gashes in the ground, erecting structures and manipulating the very landscape toward their own sometimes difficult-to-define goals.

Think of the paintings of Lucy Dodd as very, very low-relief earthworks along the lines of Robert Smithson’s or Michael Heizer’s. By making massive material processes and natural phenomena almost one-dimensional, Dodd's work widens the senses, makes the cosmic thickening visible, and uncrumples something fundamental. Although just looking at (or sometimes smelling) her large begrimed art is exhilarating enough, I wanted to run my tongue on a couple of the paintings that the David Lewis Gallery checklist says contain leaf extract, wild walnut, yew berries, liquid smoke, and flower essence. Other works include nettles, black lichen, saliva, iron oxide, charcoal, and dog urine. Some have fermenting smells; one seems to be darkening before our eyes. In this way, Dodd's paintings become two-dimensional animals with inbuilt chemistries, going through secret artistic caramelizations and painterly photosynthesis, converting liquids and semisolids into bliss. Mircea Eliade defined shamanism as "techniques of ecstasy.

The new documentary from Doug Pray, "Levitated Mass," is a story about an artist, a museum, a city, a piece of art. But what it's really about is a rock. A rock that's a star. Quite possibly one of the most famous rocks in the world, Levitated Mass, the massive monolithic land sculpture by land artist Michael Heizer that currently resides at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It's a story of hope, inspiration, fellowship, and the definition of what art is to the many individuals that make up the public that experienced Levitated Mass in its journey to Lacma. The film is all of those things because of Doug Pray, who is an immensely talented documentarian ("Hype!", "Scratch," "Art & Copy," and more), whose deft but unobtrusive direction makes the film so much more than just an advertisement for Lacma. The story of Levitated Mass goes back to 1969, when...
