What filmmakers do without a budget? They get creative, collaborative and resourceful. Filmmaker workshops will also be held to support and inform up-and-coming indie storytellers. The Opening Night Gala screening will be "The Past is a Grotesque Animal," a documentary portrait of Kevin Barnes, frontman of the indie rock band Of Montreal. The film, which ran for four days at the New Beverly earlier this year, is directed by Jason Miller. The full schedule (here) includes an array of American and international short films, along with plenty of indie-oriented workshops and talks. Festival...

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired worldwide rights to Jason Miller's rock documentary "The Past is a Grotesque Animal," whose subject is Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes. Made possible by a Kickstarter campaign, the film was funded by the $100,000 pledged by fans of the Athens, Georgia indie pop band. The movie, still in post-production, "is a personal, accessible look at an artist - frontman Kevin Barnes – whose pursuit to make transcendent music at all costs drives him to value art over human relationships. As he struggles with all of those around him, family and bandmates alike, he’s forced to reconsider the future of the band, begging the question – is this really worth it? " The director Jason Miller said, “I’m not sure if they actually liked the whole film, or just the scene with Kevin Barnes' penis flapping around, but either way, I’m thrilled to release my first...
