The team behind Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once is reuniting for a new series — at a different streamer.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered Lazarus, a limited series from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst. The drama will star Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) as a forensic psychologist who returns home after his father’s suicide and becomes entangled in a set of cold case murders. Bill Nighy, playing the lead character’s late father, and Alexandra Roach, as Claflin’s sister, also star.
Lazarus is based on an original idea from best-selling author Coben and Brocklehurst, who are writing the series together. The limited series will be Coben’s second at Prime Video, which ran (and then canceled) Shelter last year.
“Lazarus is a gripping series that captures your attention from the very beginning,” said Heather Curtis, current series executive, pan-English scripted SVOD TV at Amazon MGM Studios.

Wahey, it’s Christmas. Time to celebrate by ranking television designed to air when everyone is drunk or angry or asleep or all three. This is exactly what Jesus would have wanted.
The Doctor Who Festive Specials have been part of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year’s Day line-up since 2005 – times when there’s something of a captive audience who might not normally watch the show. Unlike the 1965 Christmas Day episode, the hope is that they’ll attract a broader audience. Some episodes are more forgiving for casual viewers than others. Some episodes will garner the ultimate praise from your father-in-law: complete silence for the duration followed by ‘That was rather good’. Some episodes make absolutely no sense to anyone who only watches at Christmas.
Including Chris Chibnall’s three New Year specials (but not ‘Spyfall’ because it’s a series opener rather than a one-off special episode) brings us to 17 stories,...

Season 1 of the generally well-received "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" series came to an epic and satisfying end exactly two months ago, but fans of the sprawling and large-scale production knew that they would have to settle in for quite a long wait before seeing where the adventure took all our favorite heroes and villains next. We know that all the surviving cast of characters, from Morfyyd Clark's Galadriel to Robert Aramayo's Elrond to Markella Kavenagh's Nori to Charlie Vickers' Sauron, will be back for another round (although with one notable recasting). Ditto for a batch of new actors who will be joining the fray, setting up an even bigger storyline to come in season 2. But what about the creative team behind the camera?

A trio of filmmakers will be spearheading “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2. Prime Video announced on Wednesday that Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper will be directing the second season of the “Lord of the Rings” series, which is currently in production in the U.K.
Brändström directed two episodes in the show’s first season – “Undûn” and “The Eye” – and will be directing four episodes in Season 2, for which she will also serve as a co-executive producer. Hamri and Hooper will direct two episodes each.
Not returning from Season 1 is J.A. Bayona, who helped get the series off the ground by directing the pilot and second episode, and Wayne Che Yip who directed four episodes including the finale.
Hamrii previously directed “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 for Prime Video and her credits also include episodes of “Empire, “Elementary” and “Rectify.” She also directed...

The upcoming second season of Amazon Studios’ The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is currently in production in the UK, will be directed by Charlotte Brändström, who is coming back after helming two episodes in Season 1, as well as Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper who are new to the franchise. The announcement also indirectly confirmed that Season 2 will consist of the same number of episodes as Season 1, eight.
In Season 1, Brändström was the only female director; in Season 2 she is leading an all-female directing team.
Brändström — who directed Episodes 106/“Udûn,” which featured Season 1’s big battle scene and the Mount Doom’s eruption, and 107/“The Eye,” which chronicled its aftermath — will be directing four episodes and will also serve as co-executive producer this season. Deep in the caverns of Khazad-dûm, there is panic. A mine has collapsed, and dwarves are trapped. But Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete) can save them, lifting up her voice in an impassioned song, urging the mountains to free her people. “Disa’s gift is to resonate, and the rocks listen. She speaks to the mountains,” says Nomvete, who plays the dwarf princess.
It’s a powerful scene in episode 4 of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” as her voice saves the lives of the miners, and, as a character created for the series, she establishes herself as a force within the story.
Director Wayne Yip told her that this moment was to be pivotal.

The first season of “The Rings of Power” has officially come to a close with an “unexpected” finale as the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series explores the lives and events that took place thousands of years before J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy of books (and subsequent films). And along the way, audiences learned how Mordor was created, that the elves were in danger of dying, and there were plenty of signs that evil was, in fact, reemerging.
As showrunner Patrick McKay previously teased to Et, “Some mysteries may be answered, so answers may provoke new mysteries.” And that’s exactly what the final episode of the season does, making good on those “several big booms” he promised were coming later in the season.
Not only that, but Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Charlie Vickers (Halbrand) and Benjamin Walker (High King Gil-galad) react to the revelations offered in episode eight, including...

There were a few cards that “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” hadn’t really played yet. It’s a show that has largely stayed strong on its own merits, even when tossing in some nods to the entry point that a majority of viewers are most familiar with.
On some level, the identities of Sauron and Stranger were going to consume everything else in this season finale like a supernova. That’s partly due to the slow-plays and misdirects that have been built into the season to this point, and it’s also a symptom of how genre TV gets absorbed now. Regardless of the reason, “Rings of Power” was a little less coy at the close of Season 1.
As anyone looking to dissect the finale has no doubt seen by now, “Alloyed” ripped...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 finale, which just dropped on Amazon Prime Video tonight. For even more on the Lotr season closer, check out Deadline’s Inside the Ring, the Rings of Power after show on October 15. Right now, watch past episodes here.
“Season 2 is fundamentally different in that our main villain is out and about, and doing his thing,” The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power executive producer Lindsey Weber reveals of what’s coming in Amazon Prime Video’s next installment of its J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. “I think in some ways, it’s going to grittier, more intense, maybe a little scarier,” the EP adds.
That villain is of course Sauron, and the just released Season 1 finale unveiled would-be blacksmith and King of the Southlands Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) to be the deposed Dark Lord himself.

A majority of the trailer has footage from the first seven episodes.
Coming away from an episode 7, “The Eye”, which finds the Queen-Regent Míriel blinded, and the Southlands getting erased off the map and renamed Mordor as the orcs settle into their new homeland. Also in Ep. 7, King Durin III steps in between the bromance of Elrond and Durin, given his distrust of elves, declaring that elves won’t be helping the dwarves out with any resources. With just three episodes remaining, the show’s narrative threads are beginning to converge.
What we want to do and what we must do are rarely the same thing, including in Middle-earth. Just ask the ever-honorable Elrond, who finds himself stuck between a mythical ore and a hard place on “Partings,” the latest episode of “The Rings of Power.” It turns out that there was indeed an ulterior motive behind High King Gil-galad sending him to Khazad-dûm, as mithril — which the dwarves, led by Elrond’s close friend Prince Durin IV, have been mining in secret — could be the only thing preventing the elves from slowly diminishing into nothingness. Asked by Gil-galad whether the dwarves have in fact found the precious ore, Elrond refuses to answer on the grounds that he swore an oath to Durin not to reveal what he saw in those mines. He’s then asked a much more loaded question,...

Sophia Nomvete, who plays fan-favorite Disa the Dwarf princess in "The Rings of Power," has her breakout moment in the fourth episode of "Rings of Power," which was released Sept. 16. There's a tragic accident in the mines of Moria, and many of the miners are trapped underneath layers of rock. No one knows if they've survived.
And then Disa starts to sing. It's a gorgeous, stunning scene, her voice rising above and capturing the anguish, fears, worries, and hopes of the Dwarves. After, she tells Elrond (Robert Aramayo) that the song was a "plea to the rocks" to free the trapped miners. And it works - all of them are rescued alive.
Nomvete tells Popsugar that when she auditioned for the show and had to sing, she chose Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine." She knew nothing then about the scene for which her vocals would be used, but she loves the coincidence now.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the product of an endless supply of resources. For all its grandeur and detail and physical craft on display, there’s one thing that the show has had in the early part of its run that’s almost always a lot harder to pin down: timing.
Take the series’ most recent episode, which finds Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in a verbal showdown with Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). With fierce conviction, Galadriel proclaims, “There is a tempest in me that has swept me to this island for a reason, and it will not be quelled by you, Regent.” A hard cut to her being put inside a Númenórean holding cell. Against the backdrop of a real, growing threat, “Rings of Power” still finds room for a well-placed comic beat.

“Nobody goes off trail and nobody walks alone” might as well be a rallying cry for modern franchise storytelling. It comes, sing-song and chanted, out of the mouths of young Harfoots and community elders about halfway through Episode 3 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” For a show invested right now in positioning viewers for the present and future of a series’ health, this third hour of eight in the opening season almost works as a second pilot, even moreso than either of the chapters that came in the show’s first week.
You can feel it in the welcome into Númenor, the island kingdom of men in between Valinor and Middle-Earth. The camera rising up over the horizon, the lingering looks at massive sculpted faces, swelling themes playing under grand seaside vistas: “Rings of Power...

“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is breaking records for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is only days away, and the Amazon Prime Video series has earned mostly rave reviews with a few mixed reactions (and one flat-out pan) as critics returned to Middle-earth.
As Variety chief TV critic Caroline Framke wrote in her review: “It’s safe to say that Amazon throwing the weight of its coffers at this property has resulted in a perfectly winning adaptation that unfolds swashbuckling adventures with clear reverence and affection for the considerable mythos behind it.”

Amazon is one of the biggest companies on the planet, and founder Jeff Bezos is at the very top of the food chain, making him a very busy man. Prime Video, the company's streaming service, is but one part of a gigantic, all-encompassing business that offers everything from delivering toilet paper to web-based solutions for other businesses. This to say, it's hard to imagine that Bezos would take a lot of time out of his day for one show coming to Prime Video, but "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" isn't just any show — it's going to be the most expensive show ever made.
Bezos recently attended the U.K. premiere for the first two episodes of the show and had some nice things to say about showrunners Patrick McKay and John D. Payne who, prior to this massive undertaking, had relatively few credits in the industry.

Several years (and several hundreds of millions of dollars) after Amazon bought the TV rights to “The Lord of the Rings” from the J.R.R. Tolkien estate, the mammoth effort to boost Prime Video’s profile with the same kind of phenomenon HBO found in “Game of Thrones” is upon us — and it’s just as grand, if not as downright surreal, as the occasion calls for. Sure, “Game of Thrones” might have solidified a television format for fantasy epics. But George R.R. Martin’s novels simply wouldn’t exist without Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” and bringing these stories to episodic life requires not just all the considerable money Amazon can provide, but a certain amount of guts from the TV writers taking it on now, some 85 years after “The Hobbit” changed the game.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon Studios’ ambitious fantasy series based on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien and reportedly the most expensive television series ever made, premieres Sept. 2 on Amazon Prime Video. But as the social embargo lifts, critics and fans who have seen the first two episodes ahead of time are flocking to Twitter to share their opinions on the highly anticipated series.
Eric Francisco, senior film/TV writer at Inverse, hailed “Rings of Power” as “big, bold and beautiful” but indicated uncertainty as to whether the prequel series will “sit alongside” Peter Jackson’s film trilogy or “deserve Tolkien’s name.”
“For now, it’s all the maximalist pizazz one might expect from a historically expensive production,” he wrote.

The showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power promise their fantasy drama for Prime Video will feature all new stories and is not “a reboot or a retread” of what J.R.R. Tolkien fans saw in the movies.
“This is a new story for most who are going to be watching it. We weren’t interested in a nostalgia play,” showrunner Patrick McKay said Friday at the TCA summer press tour. “We felt that this show had to earn its place on the start, rise or fall on its own merits. There are different stories that you’ve seen before.”
“This is before Frodo, before the rings, the time during which the rings of power were forged,” showrunner J.D. Payne added.
Premiering September 2, the series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings films and novels.

At long last, Sauron is here.
Prime Video dropped a brand new trailer for their upcoming (and wildly expensive) new series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Friday during the show’s Comic-Con panel in Hall H, and yes, this show will be tackling the original rise of Sauron.
The prequel series takes place during the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive “Lord of the Rings” saga, thousands of years before the story of the “Fellowship of the Ring.” In that regard, it also charts the first time that Sauron rose to power.
We knew this, and yet previous trailers shied away from showing or even explicitly mentioning Sauron. That ends today. This new trailer pits him as the biggest, baddest boogeyman haunting Middle-Earth, and even shows the forging of his iconic sword. It’s the most explicit reference to Peter Jackson’s iconic film trilogy yet,...

As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, the fan boy crowd can revel in Amazon Studios confirming what Deadline told you a long time ago: Howard Shore, 3-time Oscar winner for his work on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has returned to compose the original main title theme for its blockbuster 465 million series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. At the same time, Emmy-winner Bear McCreary has composed the full episodic series score.
McCreary is known for his world-building scores and use of innovative musical approaches in the worlds of television, film, and video games. He turns that toward a series that Amazon describes as the Second Age of Middle-earth as written in the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Over the past year, McCreary has recorded and composed hours of music for the score, weaving together his original themes into a sonic tapestry for a full symphonic orchestra,...

Ahead of the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con next week, Amazon Prime Video has unveiled a brand new trailer for the upcoming series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” — and this show looks huge.
“There was a time when the world was so young,” the narration over the new trailer begins, alluding to the fact that this series takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The narration continues as a familiar theme from Howard Shore’s score from the “Lotr” films plays: “There had not yet been a sunrise, but even then there was light.”
But then we see snippets of some jaw-dropping battles, until we hit upon Galadriel – played in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed film trilogy by Cate Blanchett and played in this new series by Morfydd Clark – who has clearly been worn by battle.

Middle-earth is coming to Amazon Prime Video, and while all seems at peace, a gathering storm threatens to lay it all to waste.
That’s the general vibe for the latest teaser trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which the streamer released on Thursday, giving viewers a more detailed look at Prime Video’s highly anticipated series set within J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy world.
The two-and-a-half-minute preview focuses primarily on the two characters who also appear in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy from the 2000s: Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), as they debate Galadriel’s dogged belief that a shadowy enemy believed to be vanquished is still very much a looming threat. As Galadriel is considerably older than Elrond (he eventually marries her daughter), she does not find his assurances that he knows from darkness to be all that comforting.

Ahead of Doctor Who season 11 premiering, new showrunner Chris Chibnall and his team told us that no classic monsters or villains would be featured in Jodie Whittaker’s first run as the Thirteenth Doctor. And sure enough, they were telling us the truth. Or at least, they kind of were.
You see, a rumor emerged the other day that we might see a classic foe during the New Year’s special, with speculation pointing to the Daleks making a big return to cause trouble for the Doctor and her companions. The evil pepper pots haven’t even been mentioned this season – though fans have theorized a way that they could be connected – but thanks to the first trailer for the special, which debuted today and can be seen above, it does indeed seem like those rumors may’ve been correct.

Before Doctor Who season 11 arrived, new showrunner Chris Chibnall and his team stressed that no classic monsters or villains would be returning for Jodie Whittaker’s first run as the Thirteenth Doctor. Sure enough, the resulting episodes proved they were telling the truth. However, a new rumor is pointing to them hiding a big secret: there might not be any old foes in the season itself, but there could be one in the upcoming New Year’s special.
The Mirror’s reporting that the Doctor’s long-running nemeses the Daleks will return for the hour-long episode that’s set to air on January 1st, a new airdate for the traditional Christmas Day special. The evil pepper pots haven’t even been mentioned all year – though fans have theorized a way that they could be connected – so we thought this was going to be the only season of the modern show that didn’t feature them.

The episode, titled "Resolution," is written by showrunner Chris Chibnall and directed by returning Who director Wayne Yip. Info on the plot is slim, but BBC did drop this vague synopsis:

Yes, the long-running BBC America series is shifting the highly-anticipated installment from its traditional Dec. 25 slot to Jan. 1. The all-new episode — which is going by the moniker “Who Year’s Day,” by the way — is written by series showrunner Chris Chibnall and directed by Wayne Yip.
Here’s the logline for the special, which will be the first featuring the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker: As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring from across the centuries of Earth’s history. Will the Doctor, Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) be able to overcome this threat to Planet Earth?...

Doctor Who fans are counting down the weeks until we get to see Jodie Whittaker make her proper debut as the Thirteenth Doctor when the series returns for its eleventh season. As exciting as that is, there has been one reason to be mournful, as evidence up to this point had suggested there won’t be a Christmas special this year.
Ever since the sci-fi show returned to screens in 2005, it’s had a Christmas special every year, even during periods when the full seasons were on hiatus. What made us think the tradition had ended, though, was that the press release for season 11 made reference to nine, 50-minute episodes and a 65 minute season opener, but didn’t mention an additional hour-long festive special, as you’d expect.
And yet, a new piece of evidence has now come our way which suggests that there will be a Doctor Who Christmas episode this year after all.

2.13 The End Of The Road
Jesse Custer, even before he was given the gift/curse of Genesis, lived in a world full of magic. Witness, for example, how The End Of The Road opens. Jesse is part errand boy, part living road sign, and part grifter, bringing in folks, making sure to take their money so they can park, and weeding out undercover cops when he's not posing for pictures and lifting wallets from tourists. Jesse's grifting started early, and his fighting started early, too.
In a way, Starr is right when he says that Jesse is the perfect centrepiece for his Messiah con. He has experience as a con artist, he's charismatic,...

10.8 The Lie Of The Land
“It’s me! Nardy!”
I’m filing this with ‘episodes I wished I liked more’, I'm afraid. Rounding off what we’re calling – even if nobody else is – the ‘Monk’ trilogy of stories, The Lie Of The Land kicked off promisingly, with flavours of The Last Of The Time Lords and The Stolen Earth. For, just past the half way point of the series, we’ve had the kind of ambitious story that once would have ended a run. I was half expecting a teaser for the Christmas special at the end.
It picks up in the aftermath of last week's installment. We learn then, through the...

A few weeks ago, we chatted to Mark Gatiss about his Doctor Who series 10 episode, The Empress Of Mars…
This Saturday evening, Mark Gatiss will take us on a trip to Mars. 1881 Mars, to be precise, where the Doctor and Bill find themselves mystified by the presence of a group of Victorian colonists. Gatiss’ ninth Doctor Who episode is space historical The Empress Of Mars, which features the return of some familiar foes.

Class, you beauty.
If every show had one calling card episode that summed up exactly what it does, this would be it. Nightvisiting may have been more heartrending, and the Shadow Realm two-parter more epic in scale, but Detained drilled into the core of Class’ mission: using sci-fi to tell sincere, emotional stories about young people’s lives.
The sincerity is key. Like Wolfblood before it, Class respects its teenage characters and by extension, its audience. Matteusz, the funniest and most nurturing member of the group,...

New BBC Three supernatural drama Tatau starts this Sunday. We spoke to its stars, Joe Layton and Theo Barklam-Biggs, about what to expect…
As this chat with Tatau’s lead actors, Joe Layton and Theo Barklem-Biggs, took place before the press screening for BBC Three’s new supernatural drama, the pair were given the responsibility of describing the series to me: Unique. Mysterious. Fast-paced. Energy-fuelled. A hurricane. A typhoon. (Before long, they're just listing weather systems.)
“It’s a teen show, accessible for young people” cuts in Barklem-Biggs as his co-star brings up the otherworldly, occult palette of True Detective, “even around all this darkness there will be moments that make you laugh as well. It keeps you on the edge of your seat.”
Layton gets back on message and agrees, “I think it really suits BBC Three.”
That it does, as a youth-oriented story of two twenty-something backpackers, Kyle and Budgie,...

Days before the DVD and Blu Ray release of Utopia, we enjoyed a brief chat to the wonderful Adeel Akhtar, aka Wilson Wilson…
Warning: contains Utopia spoilers.
I’d take a bet, right now, that somewhere in the country is a new-ish puppy, guinea pig, or goldfish named Wilson Wilson. I’d take a similar bet that someone, somewhere is using Neil Maskell’s unvarying delivery of the line “Where is Jessica Hyde?” as their mobile ringtone. Finally, I wager that the next time a flu epidemic hits the headlines, Twitter will be standing room only thanks to gags about Mr Rabbit.
Such is the ardent affection that six-part Channel 4 drama Utopia provoked from fans earlier this year. The show splashed a can-full of acid yellow paint onto the greyness of a UK January, rousing us from the post-Christmas slumber with a nasty...
