It is always good to watch a film that deals with the concept of corruption with realism, particularly regarding the connections between illegal immigrants and the police, and even more so from a country whose film production comprises, almost exclusively, of horror, comedy and romance movies. Nam Ron tackles this subject with a sincerity that seems to ignore the heavy censorship the authorities exercise in Malaysia.

The story revolves a number of axes, which intermingle and eventually clash. The first one revolves around two policemen: Hassan, who is married and has two children, and Hussein. The first one takes bribes frequently from various individuals mostly dealing with illegal immigrants, in order to satisfy his wife’s “demands” and pay the bills, in a tactic that eventually leads him to a clash with his partner.

Dain Iskandar Said’s second feature was his most successful, premiering at Toronto in 2011, winning the Netpac award from the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, becoming only the second film in the history of Malay cinema to be submitted to the Academy and winning eight awards. Let us see what it is all about though.
The film primarily takes place in the rural Malaysian town of Bunohan, which is located close to the Thai border. Adil is a young kick-boxer who has fallen deeply into debt, with little hope of paying his creditors honestly. In desperation, Adil agrees to an illegal high-stakes death match at a boxing club on the other side of the border, but in the midst of the fight, with Adil losing badly, his best friend Muski bursts into the ring and breaks up the match, dragging Adil away. This upsets the promoters of the fight,...

Exclusive: Malaysian star Bront Palarae is a co-producer.
Malaysia’s Jazzy Group has boarded local thriller One, Two, Jaga as co-producer alongside Malaysian star Bront Palarae’s Pixel Play.
Palarae (pictured), who is producing with Rozi Izma, says he brought on board extra funding to boost the film’s production budget and help propel it into international markets at a time when few Malaysian features are crossing over.
“Jazzy shares our aspiration as an indie studio in telling regionally themed stories that are not only unique for local and regional territories, but will surely also find an international audience,” Palarae said.
Directed by Nam Ron, the film follows two cops on the immigration beat and an Indonesian brother and sister who are trying to find their way home without passports. The cast is headed by Malaysia’s Zahiril Adzim and Rosdeen Suboh, along with Indonesian actor Ario Bayu. Rahmat Adam will serve as executive producer.

What other way is there?
It isn’t clear what way is being followed, let alone the availability of alternatives in Bunohan (2012). Adil (Zahiril Adzim) is a fighter who gets in over his head in a Thai kickboxing match and has to be rescued from the fight by his friend Muski (Amerul Affendi). This gets him in trouble with gangsters (I think). These gangsters send Ilham (Faizal Hussein), a ruthless hitman, after Adil to take him down. Meanwhile, Bakar (Pekin Ibrahim) has moved back to Bunohan ostensibly to take care of his ailing father, but actually to close out a property deal concerning the land of his father and the local kickboxing club. Thus, Bakar has to deal with Adil and Ilham, his brothers, using two-bit gangster Jolok (Hushairi Husain). Oh, and then there’s Mek Yah (Tengku Azura Tengku Awang) who is like a water spirit or something.

If the final product is as brutal as the trailer you’re about to watch, then director Dain Said’s upcoming actioner “Bunohan” could be quite entertaining. There’s certainly not shortage of bloodletting, and the fights look suitably brutal and uncompromising, which is precisely what I’m looking for in a motion picture of this caliber. However, to be perfectly honest, I’ll watch just about any fight flick that you put in front of me, a fact that is both sad and disturbing. Impressive! Here’s a handy synopsis to prepare you for the clip: Bunohan the tragic story of love lost between three estranged brothers and their ailing father. Each man’s unfulfilled struggle for reconciliation and forgiveness leads to the violence of loss, betrayal, corruption and murder. The story opens in a one-horse town in southern Thailand, just across the border from Malaysia. ‘Bunga Lalang’ or...

Well it’s about time. A release date has finally be set for Dain Said’s hard-core Malaysian Kickboxing (with family drama, blood and revenge thrown in for good measure) action movie Bunohan. How did we pick up this nugget of good news? Well, it’s plastered across a new poster for the movie, for one thing. Bunohan has been doing the rounds on the international festival circuits for a while now, so fingers crossed we’ll be seeing it locally sooner, rather than later. Full disclosure: I thought this was a kickboxing movie. So imagine my surprise when Bunohan (Aka Return to Murder) proved to be nothing of the kind. Set amidst the beautiful Kelantan region of Malaysia, Bunohan is much more concerned with family relations and the ramifications of their actions upon each other and the environment. It's a very quiet, somber movie, only tangentially related to the world of kick boxing, though the opening scenes involve Adil (Zahiril Adzim), a fighter who has fallen into financial hardship. Desperate to climb out of debt, he agrees to a "duel to the death" in a club in Thailand, but is rescued by his friends when it looks like he might lose the fight. They flee across the nearby...
