A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.
The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.

It is the latest series axed by Disney as part of its move to cut streaming costs – the Mouse House is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was similarly canceled at Disney+, found a spot on Roku.

Disney has been forced to apologise for the delay to its much hyped documentary Finding Michael, after furious waiting viewers took to social media.
Spencer Matthews, a familiar reality TV personality in the UK, has been doing the publicity rounds this week for the doc, which he presents about the search for his missing elder brother on Everest, due for launch on Friday March 3.
However, when the show failed to appear on the streaming platform, he was forced to take to Instagram to apologise for the delay, saying “the date had shifted” but giving no reason for the move.
Now Disney has released a statement to the UK’s Daily Mail, saying only:
“We’re sorry that the debut date for Finding Michael has shifted on Disney+.
“We will let you know as soon as we have new timings for its launch. This will be in the near future. Thanks for your patience.

Spencer Matthews has opened up about his expedition to find his brother, Michael Matthews, who died after summiting Mount Everest in 1999 aged just 22.
The former Made In Chelsea star turned broadcaster, 34, stars in Disney Plus’s one-off documentary, Finding Michael, which tells the story of his brother’s disappearance and his family’s journey to recover Michael’s body 20 years later.
Michael Matthews was the youngest Briton to summit Everest, but just three hours after he reached the peak, he went missing. His brother, Spencer, who was aged 10 when Michael went missing and died, had always struggled to accept his death, in part because his family did not have a body to mourn.
Then, in 2017, Spencer’s family was sent a picture by a climber that showed what appeared to be a dead body buried in the snow, in a similar location on the mountain to where Michael went missing.

Wagatha Christie (working title), produced by Lorton Street Entertainment in association with Dorothy Street Pictures, will be uncovering one of the biggest tabloid news stories in Britain over the last decade, revealing how Coleen Rooney, wife of soccer star Wayne Rooney, turned amateur sleuth to reveal who had been leaking private stories to the press, and the high-profile defamation case brought against her by fellow footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy. All the Old Knives (Janus Metz Pedersen)
All the Old Knives wants you to sweat and swoon in equal measure. Playing in the same tried and true sandbox as some of the great espionage thrillers before it, director Janus Metz Pedersen’s adaptation of Olen Steinhaur’s 2015 novel traffics in all necessary trappings of its genre. Between the clandestine correspondence and popped peacoat collars against wet European streets, it’s certainly not shy about cinematic crushes. This infatuation is wholly appropriate, because––chilly demeanor notwithstanding––All the Old Knives is a burning romantic at heart. – Conor O. (full review)

Georgia Flood and Thierry Frémont have joined Disney Plus original U.K. series “Nautilus.”
The series, inspired by Julie Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,” stars Shazad Latif (“Star Trek: Discovery”) in the lead role. Shooting is underway in Australia’s Queensland-based Village Roadshow Studios.
The series switches the viewpoint on Verne’s classic story, giving viewers the chance to see things from Captain Nemo’s point of view for the first time. Nemo is an Indian Prince who is removed from his home, family and birthright and taken prisoner by the East India Mercantile Company.
Focused only on revenge against those who have ruined his life, Nemo sets sail on the Nautilus, aided by a ragtag bunch of sailors, and soon finds himself battling not only his enemies but also discovering a mindblowing underwater world.

Exclusive: Michael Matthews is set to direct Disney’s Merlin, an adaptation of T.A. Barron’s novel series where King Arthur’s wizardry mentor is at the center of the story. Ridley Scott, who directed the 20th Century Medieval pic The Last Duel, which bows today in theaters, was attached to direct at one point but parted ways due to his busy schedule. Sources say the film is still in early development with Disney’s live-action team.
Gil Netter is producing from with the latest draft by Chris Weitz.
Based on the Barron books, the series followed the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur. While several films have focused on the King Arthur legend, the only high-profile story to focus specifically on the story of Merlin was the NBC miniseries Merlin that starred Sam Neill.

Isolated groups of people hide out underground for years after a monster-apocalypse wiped out 90% of the earth’s population in the latest buzzy movie to arrive on Netflix, Love and Monsters. Though the title and synopsis lean toward light-hearted comedy, this movie from director Michael Matthews, which is nominated for an Oscar for best VFX in this year’s awards, is actually a lot more nuanced than that. And while there are some utterly wonderful monsters, and an exploration of themes of love – the key centrepiece scene of the movie involves Dylan O’Brien, a robot called Mav1s, and a dog.
The film follows O’Brien’s character Joel, a slightly nervous young man who has lost his parents and virtually everyone else he knows after mutated insects take over the planet. He has survived for the last seven years living with his colony in a bunker but Joel is sad.

Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt and Brian Cox are on the ballot for their work crafting giant, mutated creatures for the Brisbane-shot post-apocalyptic film, each imbued with its own individual characteristics and unique personality.
But while it might be easy to assume Love and Monsters is a creature feature at first glance, VFX supervisor Sloan says director Michael Matthews made it clear at the outset the film was “not about monsters.”
A comedy adventure, Love and Monsters is set in a world where humans have been forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.

“Love and Monsters,” the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi comedy about giant mutants, has become the surprise dark horse in the Visual Effects Oscar race. That’s because it was a standout at the virtual bake-off. “The spirit of the award should go to ‘Love and Monsters,'” said one anonymous voter. “It was fun, entertaining, well done, and relied on VFX to sell and create the experience.”
It certainly helped that “Love and Monsters” evoked the spirit of legendary Ray Harryhausen in the design of the giant creatures. “We had broad stroke personality traits for each creature [from director Michael Matthews], and that’s where the animation team went to work,” said production VFX supervisor Matt Sloan.
In “Love and Monsters,” Joel (Dylan O’Brien of “The Maze Runner”) emerges from seven years of underground isolation after a monster apocalypse and on a quest to find his girlfriend (Jessica Henwick) survives a series of creature...

A surprise to Oscar watchers on nomination morning was “Love and Monsters” landing a visual effects nomination.
It was the first nomination for Mr. X, the company behind the effects of the film. The monster movie was a mix of special and visual effects. In all, more than 550 VFX shots used. Genevieve Camilleri, VFX supervisor, says the filming locations across Queensland, Australia, guided the team’s approach to the effects. “These unique environments informed how we would scale the creatures to their settings and how they would interact with the film’s post-apocalyptic landscape,” she says.
In the post-apocalyptic film, the monsters are not new creatures, they are mutated from existing insects and bugs that roamed the earth. Camilleri and the Mr. X team created over 13 different creatures.
Director Michael Matthews relied on the team to bring them to life. “We focused in on the fine details of their sensory...

Leave it to a film about the world being overtaken by massive bugs after nuclear weapons poison the planet to provide us with the hope and optimism we need to make it through our current tough times. As odd as that may seem, that’s exactly what director Michael Matthews is able to do with his romance-meets-‘Mad Max’-meets-‘Godzilla’ film, “Love & Monsters.”

One of the best monster movies has invaded the screens from director Michael Matthews, Love And Monsters.
Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there’s nothing left for him underground, he decides against all logic to venture out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way. The fun-filled and action-packed adventure also stars Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt.
Love And Monsters starts out with a bang. Literally. The exposition puts you squarely in the “you are here” of the story, and so minimal time is wasted on trying to figure it all out.

We’re seven years past the apocalypse. Eight years since the world banded together to send every nuclear missile on Earth into the sky to stop an asteroid hell-bent on destroying all life. Things obviously didn’t work out too well if the latter wasn’t able to stop the former. Ends up that that much radioactivity falling back down through the atmosphere was just as cataclysmic—killing off a lot of the population and mutating cold-blooded animals/insects into giant monsters that ultimately killed the rest. Ninety-five percent of humanity was wiped out when all was said and done with the remaining five doing what they could to survive in underground bunkers. So any hope of seeing someone outside your colony starts with braving a suicide run few could ever survive.
And by “few” I mean definitely not Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien). At least not on first glance. He...

Dylan O’Brien didn’t expect to finish up his next movie “Infinite,” co-starring Mark Wahlberg, from the comfort of his own home. But there he was, holed up in his den completing Adr.
One of O’Brien’s friends came over when he to do some looping on a fight scene. For a good hour, his friend listened to him grunt, yell and make choking sounds into a recording system that the studio delivered to his house. “I have a terrible gag reflex so choking and Adr is always really hard for me, but also I think it’s effective because I really just go for it,” O’Brien says on Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.”
Eight months into the pandemic, O’Brien, best known for MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and the “Maze Runner” franchise, is still at home, this time promoting “Love and Monsters,...

It’s tough enough for Joel (The Maze Runner‘s Dylan O’Brien) to get some alone time with Aimee (Jessica Henwick), the young woman he’s smitten with, on a good day. Throw in an apocalypse with giant monsters roaming the land and munching on anyone who crosses their path? Forget about it. Once upon a time, there was an asteroid heading toward our planet that threatened to wipe out all of humanity. The good news is that, having learned a lot from endless viewings of Armageddon, the people of...

I love monster movies. Yet the idea of a modern flick featuring giant insects having a PG-13 rating didn't sound all that promising. And then I sat down and watched Love And Monsters. Featuring Dylan O'Brien and Jessica Henwick, the Michael Matthews directed comedic adventure is far better than I'd ever have expected. With plenty of laughs and one of the biggest hearts of any feature I've seen this year, it's one of the most charming flicks I've seen…...

Welcome to Love and Monsters, or should I say, Joel’s Declassified Monster Apocalypse Survival Guide. The second feature film by Michael Matthews is set in a world seven years after an apocalyptic event wiped out 95% of the Earth’s human population and caused the mutation of insects and amphibians into enormous killing machines. The president has been killed by a giant moth and those who have survived hid underground. That’s where we find our protagonist and narrator, Joel (Dylan O’Brien). He resides in a colony, a bunch of people cooped up inside a bunker. There, everyone has found their soulmate to ride through this hell with, except Joel of course. He imagines living here is what college would have been like as his roommate sleeps with a girl in the bed next to his. He’s the cook keeping everyone fed and that’s basically all this group thinks he’s good for.

Lanciano(Italy), Oct 14 (Ians) As the storm clouds cleared and a rainbow appeared above Tortoreto, Peter Sagan -- the triple former world champion with the rainbow bands around his sleeves -- pulled off a ride for the ages, soloing to a first win since the 2019 Tour de France to pick up his first-ever stage victory in the ongoing Giro d'Italia.
The finale of Tuesday's 177km Stage 10 was peppered with steep ramps and hampered by some almighty downpours - but one man could soon see clearly once the rain had gone.
After the frustration of three second places in his debut Giro, Bora-Hansgrohe's Sagan finally struck gold, riding clear of the day's breakaway with 12km remaining and withstanding the chase behind as the Gc favourites battled for pink supremacy in the wake of an untimely puncture for Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang.

Love and Monsters star Dylan O’Brien said there’s no better time to come into adulthood than during an apocalypse. During a New York Comic Con panel for his monster flick from Michael Matthews, O’Brien said that his character’s environment adds a new element to the coming-of-age genre.
“He’s been so stunted from developing and of coming of age as he would in his adolescent years because of what’s been taking place,” O’Brien says of his Love and Monsters character Joel Dawson. “There’s so much left do discover in his life.”

Dan Ewing in ‘Love and Monsters.’
Dan Ewing makes his Hollywood debut in Paramount Pictures’ comedy-adventure Love and Monsters, which follows humans who were forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.
Formerly known as Monster Problems, the Queensland-shot film directed by South African-born Michael Matthews stars Dylan O’Brien as Joel Dawson, who reconnects over the radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick).
Aiming to rekindle their romance, he ventures out to find her, battling all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.
Ewing plays Cap, a former naval officer who is giving Aimee and members of her colony sanctuary at sea. “My character has seen the brutal horrors of what these creatures are capable of and offers the colonists a real chance at survival,” the former Home and Away star tells If.
“Very Noah’s Ark. He also puts a great spanner in the works for Joel.

The dearth of African contenders in the main competition at this year’s Berlinale might come as no surprise to the continent’s perennially disappointed filmmakers. One could argue — not unfairly — that Africa is still underrepresented at the world’s top film festivals.
But you wouldn’t have to look hard to find emerging African voices in festival strands like Berlin’s Panorama, Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema, or Cannes’ Un Certain Regard. That many of these films are from first- and second-time directors bodes well for a continent still grappling to reclaim its own narrative.
Three years after Senegal’s Alain Gomis won the Berlinale’s Silver Bear for his Kinshasa-set drama “Félicité,” other kudos for African filmmakers have followed. The past 12 months alone have seen Sudanese director Suhaib Gasmelbari’s documentary “Talking About Trees” scoop a pair of prizes in last year’s Berlinale; Sudan’s Amjad Abu Alala...
