So You Think You Can Dance‘s Boston audition stop was a cause for celebration — and not just because it featured a gal with a lampshade on her head, a hunk willing to flash his torso upon request and Mary Murphy hollerating like a Red Sox fan with the score tied at the bottom of the ninth.
No sirree, the two-hour episode turned into party central thanks to a deep and ridiculously diverse pool of talent — with ballroom, hip-hop, ballet and contemporary all on brilliant display. And while it was a near impossible task to narrow it down to the five best auditions,...

It was the end of the So You Think You Can Dance road for Ashley Valerio and Max Kapitannikov but neither has any regrets about how they handled things in just two weeks of the Top 20 competition.
Kapitannikov, a Russian-born ballroom dancer from Brooklyn, said his pop jazz routine this week was "definitely ... out of [his] comfort zone" — but he did the best he could with Brian Friedman's high-energy choreography.
"I kind of predicted that..."

Two more dancers take the fall on "So You Think You Can Dance" when the judges dropped the axe on Thursday, June 18. Latin ballroom dancer Max Kapitannikov and contemporary dancer Ashley Valerio, two contestants who did not start as a couple, must go home to leave 16 in competition.
Max partnered with Jazz/contemporary dancer Kayla Radomski on Wednesday performance night, doing a pop-jazz routine which was choreographed by Brian Friedman. Meanwhile, Ashley did a Hip-Hop style choreographed by Shane Sparks with her contemporary dancer partner, Kupono Aweau.
Another couple in the bottom three was Caitlin and Jason. But both impressed the judges individually on the solo routine and were declared safe. Nigel Lythgoe said the judges were not unanimous like last week in deciding who should go home. Nigel thought Ashley's solo was lacking on "substance" although she was looking hot. For Max, Nigel said the dancer had a...

Being cut this early in the So You Think You Can Dance season can be brutal on the dancers since they just made the Top 20, but for us spectators, at least we have the small mercy of only having just met them. So while it hardly seems fair to let any of these talented contestants go, we know someone has to leave, so let's find out who the two dismissed dancers were... Eliminated Tonight: Goodbye, Max Kapitannikov and Ashley Valerio. After the six solos by Max, Kayla, Jason, Caitlin, Ashley and Kupono, the judges decided to eliminate Max and Ashley. Nigel said the judges felt that Ashley's solo had "no great substance" and complimented Max's work ethic but said he was "restricted by [his]...

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
Well, last week the show announced its finalists for the new season, and the...
