A debut feature written and directed by an Irish peer creates the wintry atmosphere of the best ghost stories
Who knows what this says about industry accessibility, but here’s a rare chance to see a genre movie directed by an actual peer of the realm. Randal Plunkett – 21st baron of Dunsany, interviewed in the Guardian this month – has taken leave from rewilding his estate to turn out a literary chiller about the relationship between a boozy blocked writer and the itinerant waif she takes in after a drunken car shunt. It’s the kind of potential folly that’s meant to have critics sharpening their knives. In fact, while it’s not devoid of first-feature fumbles and stumbles, and carries over the movies’ traditionally wobbly estimation of How Writing Gets Done, The Green Sea’s stronger stretches invoke a wintry atmosphere that suggests Plunkett has spent his leisure time...

Out of all the films that have become recently available On Demand, Randal Plunkett's moody mystery The Green Sea caught my eye. Hailing from Ireland, the film tells the story of "a troubled musician" who is living in "self-imposed isolation until a chance meeting lures her into a potent mystery." Katherine Isabelle stars; she broke out through her starring role in Ginger Snaps some years ago, and since then her performances have always demanded attention. She brings something subtly different to each role she plays, and so that alone deserves a look. Beyond that, the film is from Ireland, and I have a special affection for the land where my grandparents were born, and the films that have been made there in the past century....

"Some guy came today looking for you – what did you do?!" Trinity Creative Partnership & Reel 2 Reel Films have debuted an official trailer for an Irish mystery thriller film titled The Green Sea, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Randal Plunkett. This arrives on VOD in July for anyone intrigued. A troubled heavy metal musician lives in self-imposed isolation in the Irish countryside until a chance meeting lures her into a potent mystery, tied to the unexpected appearance of a wayward teen girl and an enigmatic stalker who lurks in the shadows of her every move. Sounds chilling. Even though this is getting a direct-to-vod release, it has an Nc-17 rating from the MPAA. Starring Katherine Isabelle, Hazel Doupe, Jenny Dixon, Dermot Ward, Michael Parle, & Zeb Moore. Very strange trailer with some frightening scenes. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Randal Plunkett's The Green Sea, direct from YouTube:...

*full disclosure: an online screening of this short film was provided by Randal Plunkett. **there are spoilers here. Director: Randal Plunkett. Writers: Oliver Plunkett and Randal Plunkett. Cast: Emma Eliza Regan, Conor Marren, Cian Lavelle-Walsh, Aaron Lee Reed, Emmet Kelly, Gráinne Byrne and Patrick O'Byrne. Tagline: "Some things are best left forgotten." It is not everyday that an Irish lord asks for a favour. So, when director Randal Plunkett, the 21st Lord of Dunstany, mentioned that his short film "Out There" was available for review, this critic answered the call. "Out There" does not deal with nobility, however. This is a zombie film that deals with morality, or, more accurately, amorality. A flawed protagonist with amnesia must piece events together over the course of sixteen minutes. Viewers will also put the story together at the same time and Plunkett's narrative style is clever, while the dubbing hampers the film's potential.
