- Before college, marriage and her transition, Beatty received an honorably discharge from the United States Air Force (1977-81) as an aircraft avionics and electronics technician near Phoenix, AZ.
- She earned an honors degree in Computer Science in 1985 but discrimination kept her from finding work. Since 1989 she has worked as a programmer and software engineer.
- In 2016 Beatty won the RSE Adapted Screenplay competition for her Action/Sci-Fi adaptation of the William Gibson 1993 bestseller Virtual Light.
- Beatty co-founded the progressive hard rock band Glamazon in San Francisco in 1994. She was the lead singer and rhythm guitar player who wrote all the lyrics and co-wrote the music. The band toured in California and recorded one CD before Beatty left the band to devote her time to writing in 2002.
