Korean director Hong Eui-jeong’s debut feature “Voice of Silence” stood out at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival as the year’s best film from its Cheval Noir main competition section. The film, about two men who clean up after an organized crime organization, has enjoyed an impressive international festival run, having built up strong buzz as a project when it was selected to Venice’s Biennale College Cinema program in 2016.
“In a film festival that’s known as a melting pot of genres, ‘Voice of Silence’ feels like an excellent representative for the top prize in the Cheval Noir section. It’s earnest and sincere in tone but also unpredictable and experimental, impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic,” said the jury in a statement accompanying the announcement.

In a utopian Manila in a not-too-distant future, strange rolling blackouts cast an almost impenetrable darkness over city streets. When people start to go missing during the night, strict curfews are issued with equally strict punishments levied against those that would violent them.
Award-winning Philippine filmmaker Dodo Dayao’s “Midnight in a Perfect World,” making its North American premiere at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival, doesn’t explain how or why victims of the darkness disappear, instead opting to throw its four protagonists into the middle of one such blackout.
As the group stumbles through a neighborhood that should be familiar, using a mobile app to seek out one of the rumored government safe houses which are immune from the blackness, disorientation starts to overtake them. Once three quarters of the quartet find their would-be haven however, questions arise over whether they are any safer inside than they would...

Following the success of his debut feature “Violator” in 2014, Philippine filmmaker Dodo Dayao spent several years working out the details of his hotly-anticipated follow-up. By the time he managed to secure a deal, he found himself reworking the short film “The Way the Light Falls” into a feature-length version, enhanced with a veneer of political commentary on horrors faced in local society, which has made Dayao one of the brightest names in the Philippine indie scene at the moment.
“Midnight in a Perfect World” is screening at Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival
In the near future, Manila is an almost utopian city but they still believe in ghost stories. One involves people disappearing after being caught out in mysterious electrical blackouts that happen at random parts of the city after midnight. For those unfortunate enough to find themselves out of their homes, their only refuge is special safe houses installed by the authorities.

Philippines director Dodo Dayao’s supernatural horror project “Dear Wormwood” claimed the top prize on Sunday at the Iffam Project Market, part of the ongoing International Film Festival & Awards Macao.
“Wormwood” is a tale of five women living together in a remote house in the forest, where a mystery illness strikes one of the quintet, followed by a series of cataclysmic events in the surrounding forest. Dayao says he originally conceived the film as a chamber piece about the end of the world, but has expanded it into something larger and more political. He calls it a: “Lovecraftian cosmic horror that seems like a tonal fit for our times.”
It boasts Malaysian director Bradley Liew as producer, alongside Patti Lupus and Bianca Balbuena. Prior to the Macao event it had secured roughly 15% of its estimated $525,000 budget. The winners shared a cash prize of $40,000.

Filipino writer-director Dodo Dayao arrived in the public consciousness back in 2014 when his debut feature, Violator, won that year's Cinema One Originals festival Best Film before moving on to selections in Karlovy Vary, Mumbai and other high profile festivals around the world. Dayao is among the fraternity of former-critics-turned-directors and with his debut feature he quickly demonstrated that hell, yeah, he's got the talent to cross the line. Violator treads an uneasy and unusual line between arthouse and horror. It's a sort of tone poem of discomfort and dread, constantly flirting with an increasingly blurry line between the physical and spiritual, and while it may not be for everyone I fucking love it and have been eagerly awaiting Dayao's next foray in to the...

The winner of Manila's Cinema One Originals Film Festival in November of last year, director Dodo Dayao's astounding directorial debut Violator is now spreading it's dark shadow over the Competition at Osaka Asian Film Festival.Travis Bickle said, "Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets", but quite the opposite happens in Violator. When a storm arrives in Manila it brings only darkness and, quite possibly, the devil with it. A series of disconnected snapshots into the lives of various people in the Philippine capitol reveals a deep, dark, dread engulfing the city. Death and religious fear permeate every scene before the film focuses on a police station and the struggles, both internal and external, of the men within. Things...

A storm is coming and its bringing with it to Manila a rapidly escalating sense of dread. There would be panic, perhaps, were there any outlet for such an emotion but with the city on lockdown as water levels rise there is simply no opportunity for such a thing. Instead it brings with it anxiety of a sweaty, feral intensity and the sense that the entire city is simply stewing in its own sins and that those sins will soon consume all.Filipino blogger and critic Dodo Dayao makes his feature debut with Violator, a gorgeously executed and tightly controlled exercise in religious dread. "I wish Francis 'Oggs' Cruz, Richard Bolisay, and Dodo Dayao would get space in the broadsheets, because they're far more interesting than anyone writing there regularly."--Alexis Tioseco, "Wishful Thinking for Philippine Cinema"
According to Dodo Dayao's MySpace page, he is 102 years old and chasing pavements. He further describes himself as "writer, filmmaker, infrequent painter, random komikero [i.e., comic book enthusiast], heartthrob in a past life, monkey gone to heaven." We should all be so prolific. Not only does he administer two film sites--Is It Safe? and Piling Piling Pelikula--but, he's a team contributor to Geeks United, Korean Bug and Unspoken Cinema.
In similar collaborative spirit, his oil paintings have been featured in group exhibitions at various galleries in the Philippines (examples can be seen at Quezon City's West Gallery website as part of three group shows: "12x9", "Them!" and "2010: The Year We Make Contact"). He's also collaborated with Khavn dela Cruz...
