Washington, Aug 1 (Ians) Frenchman Gael Monfils collected just his second tour-level win of the season and the first since the French Open when he defeated American Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of the DC Open.
The former World No.6 won 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets against Fratangelo in Washington, D.C. on Monday night.
Staying way behind the baseline, the 36-year-old Monfils used his speed and athleticism to build a defensive wall that the 30-year-old Pittsburgh native was unable to penetrate on his 2023 main-draw tour-level debut.
En route to his 527th match win, Monfils also delighted fans with two signature slam-dunk smashes, according to a report on the Atp website.
Monfils, who at No.323 in the Atp Rankings needed a wild card into the main draw, withdrew from the second round of his home Grand Slam with a left wrist injury and played his first match since Roland Garros last week in Atlanta.

Paris, June 7 (Ians) Sixth seed Alexander Zverev thrashed Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to enter French Open quarter-finals here at Roland Garros late on Sunday.
This was German Zverev's fifth win over the Japanese and his 16th win in the clay-court Grand Slam event.
Zverev, who defeated the likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini on way to victory in Madrid Open last month, was in impeccable form as he did not allow Nishikori to get into a position of challenging him.
Coming into his fourth round match, Nishikori had won two five-setters. However, he struggled to take the German to the distance.

Paris, June 7 (Ians) Despite his impressive form on clay that saw him beat Kei Nishikori in straight sets in fourth round of French Open, and win Madrid Open last month, sixth seed Alexander Zverev is not taking anything for granted as he focusses on the last three matches and take aim at his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
"I hope I continue playing the same way I did in this match. Maybe even better. Now we are in the quarterfinals, there is only eight of us left, and the opponents are not getting easier. You need to perform at your best, play at your best," Zverev said after beating Japan's Nishikori 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.
"Hopefully I've got three more matches left here," he added.

Lausanne, May 15 (Ians) Tennis legend Roger Federer said on Saturday that athletes around the world were waiting for the Tokyo Olympic Games organisers to decide whether the sporting extravaganza "will go ahead or not" due to the evolving global Covid-19 situation.
The Olympics are scheduled to be held between July 23 and August 8.
"The athletes need a decision: is it happening or isn't it?" asked Federer, who is the joint record holder with Spaniard Rafael Nadal for winning most number of Grand Slam singles titles at 20 apiece.
"It's [the Olympics] difficult. Honestly I don't know what to think. I would love to play in the Olympics, win a medal for Switzerland…that would make me so proud. But if that doesn't happen due to the situation, I would be the first to understand," Federer told Switzerland's Leman Bleu television.
Federer said nothing was clear as of now.

Andy Murray has won the gold medal in the Summer Olympics' men's singles tennis match. The Scottish tennis legend won 3-1 on Sunday against Argentina's Juan Martín del Potro. Murray, 29, and Martín del Potro, 27, defeated Japan's Kei Nishikori and Spain's Rafael Nadal, respectively, in the semifinal round to compete for the gold on Sunday. The marks the British player's second consecutive gold medal for this event as he took home the top honor during the London 2012 Games. That victory was probably part of the reason that Murray was selected as Team U.K.'s flag bearer at this year's Opening Ceremonies.
