Chicago – With so many laughless sitcoms premiering this season on ABC, it’s tempting to overpraise a show that actually manages to be funny. “Happy Endings” has already received a good deal of praise from Hollywood Chicago for its top-notch ensemble and vibrantly witty banter, though it’s not quite in the same league as the shows it wishes to emulate, particularly “Friends” and “Arrested Development.”
In isolated twenty-minute doses, the show is a hoot, but if viewers attempt to watch an entire disc of this frenzied farce, they’ll be left feeling more numbed than amused. The pacing of each scene is so fast that audiences have little time to register whether a joke was indeed genuinely funny or just plain lame. There are so many verbal gags vying to be the funniest that at times the Chicago-set series threatens to devolve into a punchline competition.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0

Even the folks at Next New Networks were surprised just how big a hit they had on their hands just 9 months after launching their pop music parody web series The Key of Awesome. The show has now grossed over 150 million views since launching last October, with over 30 Million in just the past month. Who knew topical pop culture references with heavy teen influences would do well on YouTube? Nnn’s do-it-yourself movie network Indy Mogul decided to get into the game with a new movie parody series Rated Awesome which launched today with an send up trailer of Blade vs. Twilight dubbed “Twilight Breaking Dawn.” The concept: “What if Edward, Jacob, Bella and the rest of “Twilight” nerds had to go up against Blade the most bad ass vampire hunter?” To be sure, the re-cut/re-imagined movie trailer game is much more saturated online and particularly on YouTube. For over...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Want to be in an upcoming Weezer video? Barely Digital's music parody web series Key of Awesome announced a contest today with Weezer's River Cuomo (above) scouring the web for the funniest music videos (made for the web) of 2009. There are some pretty lengthy contest rules to look at, but basically they require entrants to actually submit their videos, which should mock or parody a popular music video. So I guess that means The Guild's "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar" video isn't eligible, but maybe a parody is? The Video should not simply reproduce the original video(s) but should mock, comment on, or poke fun at the original music video or videos, including the music video's subject matter, sound, style, musician(s) or actor(s) depicted therein, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. The web series, hosted Mark Douglas, launched this past...

The Story: "Concrete" by Paul Chadwick (W/A) - Dark Horse Comics
What It's About: "Concrete" is a high-concept alien abduction story that leaves its hero, Ronald Lithgow, stranded on Earth after aliens transplant his brain into a hulking new body. Incapable of normal human interaction and unable to seek revenge against the aliens who kidnapped and brutalized him, he takes on the name Concrete and becomes a celebrity adventurer under the cover story that he is a cyborg government experiment.
One of the best lasting indie comics series to come out of the '80s, it takes the heart of Ben Grimm's Thing situation in "The Fantastic Four" and isolates Concrete in a role that forces him to find meaning and pleasure in life without ever being able to be accepted as human by those around him.
Why It Works: Much like the plight of mutants in X-Men tales,...

Batman's beginning to wonder if his movie makes any sense at all. In music video form, the eighth video in the Key of Awesome series takes aim at the plot holes of The Dark Knight. Of course, if you've been in a hole somewhere and still haven't seen Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins sequel, be aware this is spoiler filled. Watch the video embedded after the jump, followed by the lyrics. The video: Behind the scenes: All characters played by Mark Douglas Music by: barely jake Lyrics: Kid Batman! Why is he running, Dad? Gordon Because we have to chase him. Kid Why? Gordon Because he can take it. Because hes not a hero, hes a silent guardian, a watchful protector, the Dark Knight Kid I dont get it. Gordon Neither do I son, but it sounds cool. Batman As I ride on my bike at the end of Dark...

Next New Networks' Barely Digital channel, the 11-month old offshoot of its Obama Girl led Barely Political, has launched a new musical series Key of Awesome this month. The musical lampooning series has already belted out four episodes bashing everything from celebrities crying to Twilight hating vampires. There's even two "making of" videos that are pretty spoofy themselves. The new series is a slight turn from Barely Digital's first scripted comedy Tech Know, which took a behind the scenes look at a fictional tech gadget review show. Think an internet spin on The Larry Sanders Show or Goodnight Burbank for the techie set. Tech Know has been on hiatus since mid-August and no word yet on its return. Key of Awesome is a return to what put the Barely Political crew on the map in the first place–internet topical music vids with viral breakout potential. And using their highly...
