Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck's hit science fiction novel series, "The Expanse," written under the joint pseudonym James S.A. Corey, has been adapted into an acclaimed television series of the same name. The story begins in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system. Factions on Earth, Mars, and space stations battle for supremacy. The series ran for six seasons, with its first three seasons airing on Syfy while Amazon Studios produced its later half -- sending it to stream on Prime Video.
With its interplanetary scope and impressive ensemble cast, "The Expanse" is one of the best sci-fi shows in recent memory and one of Prime Video's most underrated original series. The show is willing to take risks with its story, from the main characters dying to shocking twists every step of the way as the war for humanity's future unfolds. Here is a definitive ranking of...

"Azure Dragon," the second episode in the last season of "The Expanse," is about opportunities and repercussions (or the lack thereof). Things were pretty grim for pretty much everyone who wasn't Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) in the season premiere, and things are still pretty rough at the beginning of "Azure Dragon" for Earth and, more specifically, the Rocinante crew.
Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), however, promised something significant last episode, and "Azure Dragon" delivers on her promise — it sees Bobbie (Frankie Adams) leaving diplomacy behind and unleashing her badass McRn skills on a mission on the Rocinante, and it...

The compelling series about a solar system under siege concludes after six seasons as war-weary Captain Holden (Steven Strait) takes his salvage ship the Rocinante on its last journey in The Expanse. He and his crew are caught in a conflict launched by Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), a zealot who has inflamed his downtrodden people living in the asteroid belt, known as Belters. “The tables have turned,” exec producer Naren Shankar says. “The Belters have waged a war on [their former exploiters] Earth and Mars.” (Credit: Amazon Studios) Holden committed the Rocinante to stopping Marco and his Free Navy from launching asteroid rocks at Earth. “The crew has been on a jeopardy-filled recon mission for months, and they are worn down,” he adds. But Shankar warns of “dangers beyond Marco” on the final six episodes (released weekly). As Earth’s U.N. secretary-general (Shohreh Aghdashloo) sends former Martian Marine Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams...

Throughout its six seasons as one of the best sci-fi TV shows in recent memory, “The Expanse” has always seemed to thrive in certain extremes. From its basic cable origins to its three-year Prime Video run, the show has been at its best when it’s either at rest or its characters are in utter turmoil.
From a pure logistical standpoint, no other series has as full a sense of its world’s mechanics quite like “The Expanse.” Much of that comes from its source material, the books written by James S.A. Corey, the pseudonym of writing team Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who also write a good portion of the scripts for the new Season 6). The long-established geopolitical relationships between citizens of Earth, Mars, and the Belt complement the tactile nature of resources and equipment it takes to travel between those locations (and beyond them). From language to dress to various cultural touchstones,...

The Rocinante may be down, but it is by no means out, Avasarala makes clear in the full trailer for The Expanse‘s sixth and final season.
Set in a colonized solar system, Prime Video‘s sci-fi series began with the governments of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt locked in long-standing conflict. The crew of the Rocinante – an illegally salvaged warship – then stumbled on a vast conspiracy and a mysterious alien technology that threatens to upend the balance of power and the fate of humanity.

Amazon Studios’ sci-fi drama The Expanse has always been a fighter, and it is gearing up to go out with a bang based on the key Season 5 episode titled “Gaugamela,” the script of which serves as the latest entry in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, our series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the now-underway TV awards season.
The scripts are all being submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
In November, Amazon gave an early and final renewal for a Season 6 of The Expanse just ahead of its 10-episode Season 5 premiere. It set in motion an endgame to the Alcon-produced series, which is based on the bestselling book series by James S.A. Corey (the nom de plume...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Expanse” Season 5, Episode 7, “Oyedeng.”]
No one jumps into the vast emptiness of space without protection just because they want to do it. Sci-fi writers probably feel the same amount of reluctance about putting characters in that situation, pushing them right to edges of what the human body can safely take.
But if any TV show is capable of pulling off a near-impossible feat like that, it’s “The Expanse.” This week’s chapter, the Season 5 episode “Oyedeng,” caps off with Naomi (Dominique Tipper) risking her life to float from the ship where she’s being held captive to the decoy vessel being used to lure the Rocinante into a death trap.
It’s a move born of desperation and it ends up resulting in the death of Cyn (Brent Sexton). But instead of being a cheap, credulity-straining move from a space story just looking to get from one story point to the other,...

You can put plenty of pieces in place to help the process, but a story that takes place centuries in the future needs people to sell it. Luckily, “The Expanse,” one of TV’s longest-running sci-fi series, enters its Season 5 with a cast and crew that’s spent over a half-decade doing it in style.
By the time the show arrives at the outset of its second full season on Amazon Prime Video, it’s seen the existence of colonial outposts on distant planets, fervent religious separatist movements, and people getting help from ancient species to commune with approximations of dead friends. It’s a strange existence for the people of Earth, Mars, and the Belters who live in the outer reaches of the solar system and beyond. By the laws of escalation that govern longform episodic storytelling, it’s an oddness that needs some way to escalate.

With The Expanse season 4 coming in December, the latest trailer reveals much about the possibilities for life beyond the Ring.
The Expanse season 4 will be coming to Amazon, which has made a deal with Alcon Entertainment to continue the series for a fourth season and beyond. The move is one that was hoped for and in many cases expected by fans and those within Alcon given its overwhelming critical success and its consistent ratings on Syfy, which chose not to continue to distribute the series.
“We couldn’t be more excited that The Expanse is going to continue on Amazon Prime," Alcon Entertainment Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a press release. "We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show. We also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television for her tireless efforts.

So what's next for the channel that has given us plenty of things that have gone bump in the night along with more CG monsters than anyone could possibly keep up with? Read on for details of Syfy's "upfront" presentation.
As you'd expect from a network named Syfy, several of these projects are more sci-fi than horror, but we thought we'd pass on all the news anyway:

Syfy's time-traveling pilot "Rewind" is getting a little star power now that Keisha Castle-Hughes has signed on. Cast with Castle-Hughes are Jennifer Ferrin, Robbie Jones and Keon Mohajeri. Ferrin, who played Dana Faraday in NBC's short-lived "The Cape," will take on the rule of young genius scientist Bryce. Chicago – Set during the precarious moment following Obama’s election and prior to the Green Wave, Maryam Keshavarz’s Iran-set feature debut is one of the most provocative cinematic treasures of 2011. It’s an elegantly lensed tale of star-crossed lovers that delivers a real erotic charge, while providing an excellent showcase for beguiling newcomers Nikohl Boosheri and Sarah Kazemy.
Since any public expression of passion is forbidden between Keshavarz’s two teenage protagonists, it brings a whole other level of tension and dread to their shared attraction. Atafeh (Boosheri) has the resources and security provided by her wealthy family that allows her to live a double life with her friend and eventual lover, Shireen (Kazemy). In order to fully explore their feelings, the young women escape into their fantasies of living in a more enlightened land. For them, Dubai is tantamount to Oz.

Circumstance walks the line of a revolution for two hours, never once tripping over its feet. Directed by Maryam Keshavarz, this star-crossed romance features two of the strongest performances of the festival in Sarah Kazemy and Nikohl Boosheri. The two play young, liberated women living in an Iran determined to be socially repressed. Shireen (Kazemy) is the daughter of intellectual writers/rebels long since disappeared, the young woman taken in by her best friend Atafeh’s (Boosheri) family. Atafeh’s a talented musician and diligent student, eager to be distracted.
Shireen provides as much, and then some. Soon the two discover each other’s bodies, and their romance blossoms. None of this feels forced, thanks both to the conviction of these young performers and the confident framing of Keshavarz and his cinematographer Brian Rigney Rubbard.
Young intellectuals on the brink of change serve as a benchmark for most every cinematic movement in history,...
