A new Miss America has been crowned, and it was the youngest contestant who took home with the ultimate prize. At the event held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last Saturday, January 15, 17-year-old Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan bested 52 other contestants and succeed last year's honoree, Caressa Cameron from Virginia.
The Gering resident and recent high school graduate, who will turn 18 next month, became the youngest woman to be honored with the title since the pageant implemented age limits in 1938, according to the pageant's website. At the time, the pageant instituted age requirements between 18 and 28. However, in 1993, the age limit was changed again to 17 to 24.
Teresa won a $50,000 scholarship. During her year of service as Miss America 2011, she will travel approximately 20,000 miles each month speaking to audiences about her platform of Eating Disorders: A Generation at Risk, and acting as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Miss America has found Caressa Cameron's successor. Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan beat 52 other contestants at the beauty pageant ceremony held on Saturday, January 15 in Las Vegas. At 17, Scanlan becomes the youngest winner since the pageant made an age requirement between 17 to 24 in the year 1993 and the first to win from Nebraska.
Scanlan, who consequently won a $50,000 scholarship, would like to work on the issue of eating disorders. "I never passed up a cookie on my journey here," she joked. The Scottsbluff High School student also plans to go to law school, becomes a judge and then involves herself in the politic world.
Her answer that helped judges determining the winner was, "At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry, and I really think it's important for people who have their heart and mind in the right place get into those powerful positions.

President Obama and the First Family lit the 2010 National Christmas Tree on Thursday Dec. 9 on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.
The event was hosted by hip-hop artist and actor Common, who was joined by the likes of B.B. King, Maroon 5, Sara Bareilles, Miss America Caressa Cameron, Ingrid Michaelson and more.
The National Christmas tree is a Colorado blue spruce, which was planted on the Ellipse in 1978 and today, stands almost 42 feet tall. That's more than seven Justin Biebers high for those of you who measure in the Bieber system.
Contrary to popular belief, it is this ceremony that marks the start of the holiday season -- not the day after Thanksgiving (or whenever the mall decides to start putting up holiday decorations).

The legendary B.B. King does his thing ...
And the Obamas are appreciative.

The Miss America pageant returns to network TV in January on ABC, and the network used "The View" Wednesday (Dec. 8) to help promote it.
But hey, at least Joy Behar got some new jewelry out of it.
Current Miss America Caressa Cameron appeared on the show to announce the lineup of judges for the 2011 pageant -- including Behar, who also received an official state crown from Cameron. "I always wanted one of those," she said. "I'll never take it off."
(Which is a lie, apparently. The crown was gone by the time the next segment started.)
Behar also says her daughter asked her how she could call herself a feminist if she's judging a beauty contest, which gave Cameron the opportunity to explain that Miss America is a scholarship competition that isn't just about looks.
The other judges for the Jan. 15 pageant are Marilu Henner, "Dancing With the Stars" pro Tony Dovolani,...

The Miss America pageant is returning to broadcast TV starting next year.
The pageant, which has aired on cable for the past five years, will move back to its long-time home ABC as part of a three-year deal the network signed with the Miss America Organization. Miss America will keep the January airdate it adopted when it moved to cable; the 2011 pageant is scheduled to air Jan. 15.
Details of the deal weren't disclosed, but it's likely to be a fairly low-risk one for ABC. The network dropped Miss America after the 2004 pageant following several years of declining ratings. It then moved to Cmt for two years and Tlc for three; this year's pageant, won by Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron, averaged 4.5 million viewers, a pretty strong number for Tlc.
Despite that, however, Tlc declined to pick up another three-year option, leaving the competition once again without a TV home. The return...

It took Caressa Cameron four tries to become Miss Virginia, but once she nailed the state title last year, it's easy to see how she went on to capture the glittery Miss America crown in Las Vegas on Jan. 30. This was one poised, smart, candid and effervescent young woman who sat down to lunch in Washington Monday with a bunch of strangers, including several reporters and TV producers. Sure, she'd been in D.C. before, to sing the National Anthem at the Washington Nationals' season opener, where she shook hands with President Obama, and to serve as grand marshal of the Cherry Blossom Parade earlier this month. ...
