Michael Elgin saw another of his dreams realized recently when he signed a two-year contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling. The powerhouse performer is excited to represent the company, teaming with Hiroshi Tanahashi to face the Briscoes at Ring of Honor’s 14th Anniversary Show Friday, Feb. 26 at 9/8Ct on pay-per-view. “I think me and Tanahashi made a great tag team as part of the World Tag League late last year,” Elgin says. “I’m glad we can compete together stateside. I think it will be a heck of a match with the Briscoes. When they say they are one of the … Continue reading →

Following the announcement that Iwgp Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura was departing Njpw for WWE, it was announced that Nakamura would be vacating the title. The announcement wasn’t without some controversy, as most expected Nakamura to drop the belt to Kenny Omega, the obvious Ic champion in waiting.
As far as New Japan was concerned, though, they didn’t want a Nakamura vs. Omega match to happen where the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Instead, they made the decision to strip Nakamura of the belt and decide the champion at a later date.
The match to determine the new champion occurred Sunday at New Japan’s The New Beginning In Niigata event. Former Iwgp Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi, who headlined WrestleKingdom 10 just over a month ago, took on the new leader of the Bullet Club, Kenny Omega, for the vacant Iwgp Intercontinental Championship.

It was mentioned on social media this week by Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s Excalibur that we’re currently living in “a literal renaissance” of professional wrestling. After spending months on end scouring dozens of hours a week of programming for the absolute best spots found inside the squared circle, I’d have to say he’s right. This is a great time to be a wrestling fan.
Evidence for the renaissance can be found this week in a plethora of promotions. WWE’s Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens offered the most moments worth rewatching. Michael Elgin appears twice, notably from two different promotions on two continents. And then there’s that Tna zombie. I’m not hating on her, but she definitely needs to be seen.
First up this week is some man on woman violence from Lucha Underground…

Now that the WWE is in the wake of Night of Champions, the wrestling world has had to come to terms with the fact that Kane is the newest challenger to Seth Rollins’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship. While I’ve found the split personality head games of Kane mildly amusing, this is far from the most marquee matchup that could be offered.
A Kane challenge against Seth Rollins might not be the most marquee rivalry WWE can offer but at least Kane has all of his limbs. Looking at Tna, a one-legged man defeated one of their former World Champions. I’m all for a good underdog story, especially when it’s the celebration of a war hero, but something’s off here.

If Ring of Honor ever gets their own Hall of Fame, and if Tna’s is still around in a few years, you can imagine that Christopher Daniels would be one of the few men on the planet to be inducted into both.
Daniels has been with both wrestling organizations from their inception (he first appeared on Tna’s fourth weekly pay-per-view, and main-evented the first Roh show), and been one of their best workers. Throughout the years, his character has evolved from a dark, religious menace to a man that just loves to have an appletini or two. Recently, he’s also taken his love of comic books into a new realm after writing his own comic “Christopher Daniels and Kazarian Wrestle Aw Yeah Comics.”
In a baffling decision, he was released from Tna earlier this year. However, Tna’s loss is Roh’s gain as Daniels and his...

Rey Mysterio recently made waves for defying his WWE contract — which he wants out of — and appearing at Aaa’s Triplemania event. Reportedly, there has been no punishment handed down to Mysterio since his act of defiance and apparently, there has been no communication or contact made at all.
Now, WWE contracted star, Brad Maddox has made a similar move. Maddox was spotted at last evening’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla event in Reseda, California. Pwg is one of the most popular independent wrestling promotions there is. The company operates exclusively out of Southern California — or SoCal.

Last night, August 29th, was the first event in Pwg’s Battle of Los Angeles series for 2014. The Bola series, as its often called, is a single elimination tournament held over multiple nights. This year represents the 10th annual incarnation of the series and will conclude on Sunday, August 31st.

Tna may have the national exposure (for now) that many wrestlers desire, but Ring of Honor world champion Michael Elgin seems just fine where he is. Elgin said that Tna expressed interest in him, but he didn’t feel as if the move was right for his immediate future.
Elgin spoke about RoH, Tna, as well as Spike TV and his future in wrestling with Between the Ropes this week, as he was promoting RoH’s upcoming “Death Before Dishonor 12″ show on August 24 in Illinois. Elgin said that Tna actually reached out to him in June, shortly before he won the RoH world title at Best in the World.
Regarding the situation, Elgin said that his heart was with RoH, something Tna couldn’t replicate. Elgin has worked as a main roster member of RoH since 2010.
“I was kind of reached to. But, ultimately I have no interest (in Tna),” Elgin said.

Wrestling fans are always looking towards the future, speculating on what young talents will become huge stars, who will leave the independent scene for mainstream success, and so forth. It’s a natural thing to do in any aspect of sports, and wrestling is certainly no different.
This column will be for those folks, as it will essentially be looking at the future by looking at ten great wrestlers under the age of 30 that don’t currently work for WWE in any way. They could be on the Tna roster, they could be on the indy scene, or they could wrestle internationally. The common thread is just that they haven’t quite reached the age of 30, and that they aren’t currently under WWE contract.
It won’t really be a gauge of their success to this point, or how many titles they’ve won wherever they’ve been wrestling.

(Note: These are “catch up” reviews due to other commitments making me unable to watch either episode until now, as such they will be a brief summary rather than play by play recap)

We get a brief recap on last episode’s main event and its time limit finish, then the intro.
This episode was recorded in Louisville, Kentucky
We get a continuation of Roderick Strong’s campaign against Davey Richards, with a prelim video with Strong and his opponent for match one, Kyle O’Riley. O’Riley says hes being disrespectful, Strong says Team Richards goes from town to town not getting laid and that’s pathetic. Nice.
Match One: Roderick Strong w/ Truth Martini def. Kyle O’Riley
Before the match Martini makes the announcer introduce him as Strong’s “Life Intervention Expert, The Founder And Leader Of The House Of Truth, The TV, Super Duper, King Kong,...
