Setra means "daughter of the sun" in the ancient Egyptian language of Khemet. As the name suggests, this daughter of the sun lived all over the world, born to an Egyptian father and a Caribbean mother. After the death of her father when Setra was two, her mother left Egypt and began traveling the world, living briefly in France, the UK and Germany before finally settling in the United States. This exposed Setra to a wide range of musical influences which are apparent in her music.
Hardly attending school as a child and dropping out of school before completing even her first year in high school, Setra is what's known as a autodidact in every sense of the word. She taught herself to play guitar, keyboard, bass and violin. After receiving an offer from Sony Publishing for her songwriting skills, which led to a development deal with Columbia Records, Setra declined both offers and taught herself music production and moved from New York City to Los Angeles in 2008.
