Sydney (Australia), Aug 6 (Ians) Sweden ended the top-ranked United States’ title defence on Sunday after prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout, while the Netherlands downed underdogs South Africa 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sweden ranked third, inflicted the U.S.’ earliest-ever Women’s World Cup exit after winning a nerve-jangling penalty shootout 5-4. The two teams had been deadlocked 0-0 after extra time in Melbourne.
The U.S. missed three penalties in the shootout, including from retiring superstar Megan Rapinoe, and Sweden missed two, reports Xinhua.
In the seventh round of penalties, substitute Lina Hurtig proved Sweden’s hero, but only after a Var confirmation was needed to determine whether the ball had crossed the line before American keeper Alyssa Naeher caught it.
“I think we came out today and showed what we’re all about,” U.S. coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “Unfortunately,...

Wellington (New Zealand), July 27 (Ians) A rematch between the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists ended 1-1 here on Thursday, as Lindsey Horan’s header cancelled out the Netherlands’ opener in a highly anticipated Group E game.
This is the second time the U.S. and the Netherlands have faced off at the World Cup, and the first since the 2019 World Cup final in France, which saw goals from Rose Lavelle and Megan Rapinoe gift the U.S. a 2-0 victory, reports Xinhua.
The matchup also marked the first time in Women’s World Cup history that the two finalists from the previous tournament met in the group stage.
The U.S. were unbeaten in a record 18 successive matches in the finals (excluding penalty shootouts) before Thursday’s game, winning each of the last 13. The four-time champions started their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Vietnam, while the Netherlands squeezed past Portugal 1-0.

Auckland, July 22 (Ians) Reigning champions the United States got their title defense underway at Eden Park as they dominated Vietnam 3-0 in a Group E match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup here on Saturday, with Sophia Smith scoring two and setting up another.
Having won the last two editions of the tournament and four titles overall, the US are considered as the most successful team in the campaign, while Vietnam have made history by qualifying for a men’s or women’s World Cup final stage for the first time, reports Xinhua.
Megan Rapinoe was benched with Alex Morgan starting up in front for the US, while Vietnam fielded a 5-4-1 formation.
As expected, Vietnam were majorly outclassed and could hardly string together a run of play, while the US put together a series of chances and went ahead in the 14th minute when Morgan’s smart back-heeled pass found Smith,...

Soccer star Trinity Rodman's last name may ring a bell - the youngest person to ever be drafted in the Nwsl is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman. Dennis is best known for his legendary defense and rebounding with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, among other teams.
At 21 years old, Trinity has already established a name for herself separate from her famous dad.
