It’s recommended by Director Nat Gee that for her experimental short Waves, if you’re watching at home on a computer or laptop, you use headphones to envelop yourself in the full sonic experience of her short film. I would back that recommendation as it’s a film which addresses the relationship between mind and body during a time of intense distress through a truly evocative, cerebral manner. Gee uses the various fundamental filmmaking components; vivid cinematography, intense soundscaping and an emotive central performance, to convey a direct point-of-view perspective of the acute inner workings of an engulfing anxiety attack. The sound in particular is worth embracing the use of headphones for as it embeds you in the world of its character, who is portrayed expressively by fellow Filmmaker/Artist Lily Baldwin, through an assortment of tactile, disorientating sonic elements. Directors Notes got into these themes, the use of the fundamental filmmaking tools,...

The abstract yet oppressive sensation of an anxiety attack is captured through intense corporeal movement in Waves, the latest from Brooklyn-based filmmaker Nat Gee. The film stars Lily Baldwin as a woman in the throes of an anxious episode, her oft-idyllic surroundings transformed into hostile environments. A well-manicured flower garden becomes a frightening, frenzied feast (and viny prison); gentle waves crashing upon a sandy shore morph into a violent assailant; a stroll in a verdant, tranquil park turns into an uneasy exercise in losing bodily autonomy. Yet as fascinated as Gee is in conveying the unsettling feeling of being consumed […]

Director, choreographer and dancer Lily Baldwin has appeared in these pages several times over the last decade in interviews about her work across both short film and virtual reality. But throughout this time, one project — alternately creatively compelling and deeply distressing — has been a persistent focus. In a story she details in our interview below, it began as Glass, an autobiographically-inspired thriller about a woman being stalked, that placed in the IFP (now Gotham) Emerging Storytellers program in 2014. It then morphed into a multi-part documentary TV series before finally now hitting download queues as a six-part Audible […]

Tribeca Film Institute has selected 13 finalists from a pool of 115 submissions from New York City to screen at their annual “Our City, My Story” showcase on May 5 during the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.
Each film focuses on New York City through the perspective of a filmmaker 21 years old or younger in the categories of animation, documentary, experimental, and narrative. Immediately following the screening one winning film will be announced in each category.
“Film is one of the most pervasive mediums of today and I strongly feel we must nurture both authenticity of expression and innovation. In our thick cultural times of 2019, it’s imperative we give young voices a platform to be heard–without pushing our agenda,” said Lily Baldwin, “Our City, My Story” juror. “The brazen and young individuals of NYC are the future and we must listen. AFI Fest wrapped up last Thursday but not before a host of cool awards movies, indie darlings, and international gems played for the Hollywood audience (see our preview for a few highlights). But another main element of the AFI Fest experience is the Tech Showcase. As in the last few years, this has focused mainly on Vr and 360 content. In particular, there was a fair amount of narrative content at this year's fest. Some of the notable pieces at AFI Fest that we've covered in past articles included Lytro and Within's Hallelujah (Cannes), Penrose's Arden's Wake and Within's Life of Us (Tribeca), and Saschka Unseld's Dear Angelica and (along with Lily Baldwin) Through You (Sundance). Here's a look at some of the pieces on...

Although dance and virtual reality seemingly lay at polar ends of the creative spectrum, they can come together to make incredibly moving artistic experiences. That, at least, holds true for co-directors Lily Baldwin and Saschka Unseld in their new piece Through You, a Vr film heavy on physical choreography that premiered at Sundance earlier this year and on August 1 was released on Samsung Gear Vr via the Oculus Video app. The piece features a couple as their relationship evolves over the course of decades through discovery, fulfillment, loss and rejuvenation. It uses handheld camera movement to create a very visceral […]...

The Sundance Film Festival is just getting started in Park City, Utah, and virtual reality company Jaunt Inc. is heating things up at the winter event by announcing a Vr series reimagining of The Lawnmower Man, the 1992 film based on the Stephen King short story of the same name.
A far cry from King’s short story upon which it is based, Brett Leonard’s The Lawnmower Man movie heavily incorporated virtual reality in its plot. No details on the Vr series’ plot are known at this time, other than the fact that it will be a “reimagination of the film.”

Dreams are the subjects of books, movies, songs, and awkward conversations. They dominate so much of fictional storytelling, whether it’s an infamous episode of The Sopranos, the weird meat of a David Lynch movie, or a forgotten Gabrielle pop hit. But for all the talk about dreams, rarely are they portrayed vividly and accurately in popular culture (though that Sopranos episode came very close). A group of independent filmmakers sought to change that when they came together to make collective:unconscious, an anthology in which five filmmakers wrote and directed short films based on each others’ dreams. After playing the festival circuit, including SXSW and BAMcinemaFest, the film is now available for free online as released by the producer, Dan Schoenbrun.

Editor’s Note: Last week. producer Dan Schoenbrun announced that he would be giving away his festival hit “collective:unconscious” for free. While the strategy may be surprising, from the start nothing about the project — in which five up-and-coming directors would adapt each other’s dreams — was particularly conventional. We asked Schoenbrun the philosophy behind giving the film away and he shared with us this essay.

Dan Schoenbrun’s film “collective:unconscious” is an omnibus film like no one has ever seen before. In 2014, Schoenbrun asked five filmmakers to adapt each other’s dreams for the screen. What began as a quick five-part web series evolved into one of the most original debut features of 2016. Now, the film will be available to the public to download for free exclusively on BitTorrent on August 9th, complete with bonus features, samples of the directors’ previous work, and the original recordings of the dreams they adapted. Watch the trailer for the film below and check out a poster as well.

When some of the most invigorating and intriguing American independent filmmakers join together to interpret each other's dreams on screen, cinematic magic is inevitable. The thought of Lily Baldwin (Sleepover La), Frances Bodomo (Afronauts), Daniel Patrick Carbone (Hide Your Smiling Faces), Josephine Decker (Thou Wast Mild and Lovely), and Lauren Wolkstein (Social Butterfly) collaborating on a film project together should be mind-blowing to anyone who has paid close attention to any of these filmmakers.

Read More: SXSW 2016: How Do This Year’s Filmmakers Make a Living? Most people in independent film know Dan Schoenbrun as Kickstarter’s Film Outreach Lead. A large part of his job is helping filmmakers learn more about crowdfunding and guiding them through how to run an effective campaign. Schoenbrun has a front row seat to what a long and grueling process independent filmmakers go through to get their films made and in 2014 he decided he wanted to experiment to see if there was a way he could free up some of his favorite filmmakers. The idea was to create a collaborative film where directors could sketch, play and experiment. He asked five New York based filmmakers – Lily Baldwin ("Sleepover LA"), Frances Bodomo ("Afronauts"), Daniel Patrick Carbone ("Hide Your Smiling Faces"), Josephine Decker ("Thou Wast Mild and Lovely"), Lauren Wolkstein ("Social Butterfly") – to write down a brief description of...

Project Name: collective:unconscious Asking For: $15,000 on Indiegogo Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $12,003 Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 8 Description: collective:unconscious is a project through which five budding filmmakers will dig into each other's heads. I don't mean that literally, of course; this isn't Five Nights At Freddy's: The Movie. Instead, each participating filmmaker will describe one of his or her dreams in as much detail as he or she desires. Once that step is completed, series creator Dan Schoenbrun will assign each dream to one of the other filmmakers, who will then have to adapt that dream however he or she sees fit. None of the five participating filmmakers are particularly recognizable names, but they all have strong work on their respective resumes. Their names are Josephine Decker, Frances Bodomo, Lauren Wolkstein, Daniel Patrick Carbone , and Lily Baldwin, and they have collectively appeared...

On the heels of the 39th edition of the Toronto Int. Sectioned off as projects at the very beginning of financing to those that are nearing completion, there happens to be tons of Sundance alumni in the names below. Among those that caught our attention we have Medicine for Melancholy‘s Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, produced by Bad Milo!‘s Adele Romanski, Moonlight is about “two Miami boys navigate the temptations of the drug trade and their burgeoning sexuality in this triptych drama about black queer youth”. Concussion‘s Stacie Passon digs into the thriller genre with Strange Things Started Happening. Produced by vet Mary Jane Skalski (Mysterious Skin), this is about “a woman who has...

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.
