Director, screenwriter, literary theorist and author of poetry and philosophy texts Dmitry Mamuliya graduated from Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Philosophy and went on to study Directing in Moscow. He is the author of the films Moscow (short), Another Sky – which marked his debut feature – and The Criminal Man.
On the occasion of “The Criminal Man” screening at Thessaloniki International Film Festival, we speak with him about the inspiration behind the film and Giorgi, the unnoticeable people of the world, becoming a criminal, and many other topics.
What was the inspiration behind The Criminal Man and how did you create the character of Giorgi?
I was interested in genealogy of a crime, how a person steps into the darkness, into the night, how their soul gets sick and starts a feud with the world around. I suddenly discovered that all that is happening to this sick soul has visual nature.

The selection from the Out of Competition, Orizzonti and Sconfini sections marks the eighth year of the online Web Theatre - which offers a maximum of 1000 tickets for each screening, with each version featuring subtitles in Italian and English. The films will stream from 9pm Italian time on the day they are presented on the Lido an will be available until September 19.
This year's line-up includes Colectiv (Collective), by German-Romanian documentarian Alexander Nanau (The Prince Of Nothingwood), plus the second feature by Théo Court, White On White, about a wedding photographer who becomes obsessed with the bride to be, starring Alfredo Castro. The lineup has been unveiled for year’s edition of the Venice International Film Festival, taking place August 28 through September 7. Aside from films previously announced as coming to Tiff, some major new announcements include Olivier Assayas’ Wasp Network, James Gray’s Ad Astra, Roy Andersson’s About Endlessness, Ciro Guerra’s Waiting for the Barbarians, David Michôd’s The King, Benedict Andrews’ Kristen Stewart-led biopic Seberg, and Roman Polanski’s J’accuse. Only two films by female directors made into the competition lineup: Haifaa Al-Mansour’s The Perfect Candidate and Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth.
