We open with Bonnie recapping her father’s murder at the hands of Silas to Jeremy, an odd stylistic choice since we literally just saw it in the previouslies. They lament that while Jeremy can “be there” for her, they can’t touch. I wonder if that will have any significance later this evening?
Bonnie exposits that Silas has “mind-controlled” the residents of Mystic Falls to be on the lookout for a girl who looks just like Elena.
Cut to Katherine stumbling out of the forest, still suffering the effects of last night’s car crash and having picked up a nasty cough. She flags down a passing motorist, who notes her resemblance to Elena before macing her full in the face.
The motorist pulls out her cell but before she can make a call Katherine decks her, the pain in her hand reminding her...

A couple walks the deserted streets of Manhattan, making date night small talk until they spot a body lying on the sidewalk. The man moves in for a closer look but when he glances back to his date the body disappears. One piercing scream later the woman is bloody and dead on the ground. The man spots a figure moving toward him; he thinks it's that hot new serial killer all the kids are talking about, Son of Sam.
Damon steps into the light of a street lamp and corrects him: “Son of Giuseppe, but, close enough” and tears out the guy's throat as Talking Heads' “Psycho Killer” swells on the soundtrack. A caption identifies the date as 1977, as do the flares the victim is wearing.

This week's episode opens a few hours after last week's. Damon is bound to a chair with a fireplace poker stuck in his abdomen. Sadly, he remains fully dressed, except for his magic protective ring (witches can create magic jewelry that allows vampires to walk in sunlight). He thinks Stefan is behind it, apparently not seeing Mason standing by the window. Stefan wanders in and is oddly uncurious as to how Damon came to be lashed down. He pulls out the poker and removes a piece of the binding and wanders out again. Damon shouts that he'll free himself but before he can Mason pulls back the curtains, sizzling Damon in the morning sun.
In the town square, volunteers are setting up for yet another of the town's infinite number of public festivals. This week it's the “Night of Illumination,” when the town turns off the lights and fires up some hanging lanterns.
