The first American winner of 'Masterchef' nearly lost it all thanks to a chicken catastrophe.
In the season finale, head judge Gordon Ramsay chose Whitney Miller, a 22-year-old college student, over software engineer David Miller for the $250,000 prize and cookbook publishing deal.
Both the Millers (unrelated) beat out Sheetal Bhagat and Lee Knaz to reach the final head-to-head competition. There, Whitney Miller almost threw everything away when the fried chicken she'd just cooked slipped off her spatula onto the floor. Ramsay looked horrified, but Whitney managed to re-cook her chicken in just seven minutes.

Whitney Miller has been crowned the first ever winner of MasterChef. The 22-year-old student from Poplarville, Ms triumphed over fellow finalists Sheetal Bhagat, David Miller and Lee Knaz in last night's season finale of the Fox competition's freshman season. "Winning MasterChef was amazing. I really felt all the hard work I put into the competition had just paid off," she said. "Being the youngest competitor, I was able to prove that age is just a number, and I cannot wait to continue my culinary career because now there is definitely no turning back. I’m just elated." She scooped a prize of $$250,000, her own cookbook publishing deal and the title of 'America's First Ever MasterChef'. Gordon Ramsay, who judged the finale alongside Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot, described Miller as a "brilliant ambassador" (more)...

America's first "MasterChef" is Whitney Miller despite a horrifying 11th-hour error during plating.
On Wednesday's (Sept. 15) two-hour finale, after several grueling weeks of Mystery Box and Individual Ingredients challenges and dreaded Pressure Tests she takes home a quarter million dollars and a cook book deal. She plans on starting a catering business with the money and her newfound fame.
[Note: Check back with Zap2it Thursday, Sept. 15 for our interview with Whitney]
From Four to Two
The journey ends early for Sheetal Bhagat in the first head-to-head competition against David Miller as they both prepare clam chowder, apple pie and veal milanese. Lee Knaz is also out of luck when he goes up against Whitney Miller, cooking eggs benedict, chicken parmesan and cheesecake.
If Dave's going to drizzle olive oil atop traditional chowder and cook milanese in the oven with apple pie and have them come out tasty, those are definitely calculated risks that pay off. Whitney gives us a couple nail-biting moments...

America's first "MasterChef" will be crowned Wednesday (Sept. 15), and as we've seen by the past few episodes, there could be major upsets.
We're talking about Sharone, who has incredible skills and instincts, but occasionally lacks the basics (deboning fish). He fell to the mighty Whitney's baking prowess.
It's a two-hour finale, so get ready for the long haul. This journey has spotlighted home cooks, and it's as much about their skills as it is their story.
Let's see who's left:
David Miller - He's been pretty consistent, never really faltering except once when his team lost, and has two team wins and one individual win, the super-scary challenge when he had to impress three intimidating food critics. The software engineer from Massachusetts started out fairly arrogant and got a dressing down, but has turned out to be a fairly funny dude.
Whitney Miller (no relation) - Have you heard? She's only 22 years old!

David Miller, Whitney Miller, Lee Knaz and Sheetal Bhagat will be the four chefs battling for the prize in next week's MasterChef finale. The amateur cooks won a spot in the show's final stage in last night's episode, which meant that Mike Kim and Sharone Hakman were sent home. The episode opened with the final Mystery Box challenge of the season, which saw the remaining six chefs working with ingredients including a rack of venison, quail eggs, blueberries, potatoes and wine. Sheetal (roasted venison with blueberry wine sauce), Whitney (venison with southern gravy) and Sharone (pan seared venison with blueberry puree) were chosen as the top three and had their dishes tasted by the judges. Gordon named Sheetal the winner: "You make that become a dream come true." They were less impressed by Sharone's presentation, although said the venison was cooked (more)...
