- (September 2014) The Priestess and the Shepherd King. Writer credit as Annie Armstrong. The Priestess and the Shepherd King is set against the backdrop of Sumer, also called Sumeria, in the region of Mesopotamia. According to recent research, a 200-year-drought brought about the decline and end of Sumeria. The young woman who takes the name of Inanna upon her ordination must grapple with a changing climate, a figurehead role, corruption in the temple, and a frightened, panicked populace. The promiscuous nephew to the ruler/king of Uruk who accepts the role of Dumuzi, her husband, becomes disillusioned by life behind temple walls. He's confronted by Uruk's fearsome general who demands to know if he will rise to his role as Shepherd King or abandon his Queen of the Heavens. The Priestess and the Shepherd King is the second novel in the Parallax Series of historical fiction. A parallax is defined as the effect of an object being seen from two separate points of view. In The Priestess and the Shepherd King, the story is told by both Inanna and Dumuzi.
