If it were up to us, "Project Runway" would never be "out," it would just play on a loop 24/7/365.
Sadly, Season 14 will say auf wiedersehen on Thursday, November 5th, so now seems like a good time to take stock and rank the previous 13 seasons, with the expectation that the 2015 season will probably fall somewhere in the middle of the pack once it's done. (Tim Gunn "hated" Season 14, but there have been worse.) Every season of PR is a precious, unique little rhinestone, but, like the judges, we have our favorites -- and now it's Our turn to be biased.
So here's our very subjective but still definitive worst-to-best ranking, which may only be challenged by a glare from Nina Garcia, an eye roll from Michael Kors, a "make it work" from Tim Gunn, or an "out" from Heidi Klum.
13. Season 11 (aka 'Teams')Maybe it seemed like a good, or at least dramatic,...

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. I don't know a single person who believes "Project Runway" is at its best now, but the decade-old reality competition is still chugging along, and that's a remarkable feat for a show that peaked in terms of sheer entertainment value at the end of its first season. Yes, season one. Say what you will about the subsequent cycles, which have included some of the most hilarious contestants (Santino Rice, Laura Bennett, the loopy, lovable puppetrix Elisa Jimenez) and undeniable talents (Christian Siriano, Mondo Guerra, Leanne Marshall) in reality history, but "Project Runway" has almost always required trumped-up workroom drama to keep us coming back. Season three succeeded with the Jeffrey Sebelia cheating allegations and season eight offered up an irritating, intriguing teacher's pet in the form of winner Gretchen Jones, but the duller seasons...

In 2010, a 23-year-old fashion designer named Andy South competed on Project Runway‘s eighth season and sparred against some wild competition: the histrionic Michael Costello, the deadpan hero Mondo Guerra, the unwaveringly self-assured Gretchen Jones (who won the season, outraging many devoted fans), and the sweet but bizarre Casanova. Now, the studious and methodical South is back as more confident alum for Project Runway All-Stars 3, which premieres tonight, but with a brand new life in tow.
Since South’s last appearance on Lifetime’s reality competition staple, the designer has completed a gender transition. Now, the Waianae, Hi native is a woman known by the name Ari South — a name picked out by Ari’s mother. We caught up with South to discuss pleasing a whole new panel of judges (including host Alyssa Milano), the story behind her new name, and how her personal transformation has affected her work.

Designer and former ‘Runway’ contestant Michael Costello talks us through the latest episode in his recap. The designers are commissioned by Susan Sarandon to redesign her ping pong club’s uniforms!
This week, designers will work in the same teams: let’s just say Dream Team looked startled about that. I would be too! I remember my team challenge in Season 8 was the worst day of my life! Everyone threw me under the bus. I felt like that bus kept running me over and over!

If too many cooks can spoil the soup, then it follows that too many “twists and turns” can reduce a Project Runway challenge into something of a muddled mess. This week, the 14 remaining designers were split into seven teams of two, paired with a client who happened to be a former Runway contestant and a Lexus vehicle that would provide a “color inspiration,” and then asked to create a red-carpet look for said client for the 2012 Emmys. (Why not just make everybody jump through a flaming hoop for good measure?)
Things in the workroom got fairly ridiculous — as is usually the case during team challenges.

There's something surreal about picking up the phone and hearing Mondo Guerra's distinctly subdued voice pronounce my name. After all these months of watching the designer compete -- and eventually win -- on Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars," this is like a breaking of the fourth wall. As much as we know we're watching reality TV, we still think of the contestants as characters, not actual people, right?
And yet here is the season's winner Mondo Guerra in the flesh (well, via cordless phone) ready to chat about his experience on this season's show.
After narrowly losing "Project Runway" Season 8 to Portland-based designer Gretchen Jones, the quirky designer -- who famously shared his HIV positive status with the world during a poignant moment on the runway that season -- returned to fight the ultimate fashion battle against other past runners up.

When fan favorite Mondo Guerra finished in second place behind fellow contestant Gretchen Jones on season 8 of Project Runway, fans of the hit reality show posted hundreds of angry comments on Twitter – many of them threatening to boycott the show forever. Tonight, the Mexican-American designer is getting a second chance at the title, as one of the three remaining finalists on “Project Runway All Stars” (9/8c on Lifetime). Guerra spoke exclusively to The Huffington Post about the outcome of tonight’s highly anticipated season finale!

I’m going to come out and say it: Project Runway (regular and All-Stars) needs to send the Fashion Faceoff to the same dumpster that’s currently housing acid-washed denim, the 8-ball jacket, and anything ever worn by Randy Jackson on American Idol.
I understand that, on paper at least, when you’re down to eight designers, it’s got to be tempting to split them into four head-to-head matchups — sending the winners to safety, putting the four losers up for elimination, and pumping up the drama. But that kind of drama always ends up feeling contrived, and what’s more,...

Much as I forswore never again to take on the thankless task of recapping a Project Runway season from beginning to end like I did last year (unless, ahem, you wanna throw some major cashish my way) we have to, just simply have to, watch the PR All Stars premiere Thursday January 5 at 9/8 central on Lifetime. I mean, how can we not? So let's take a look at the contestants and try to figure out why they're putting themselves through this hell again.
First of all you need to be aware that there will be nary a leggy German supermodel with a proclivity towards short hems in sight, nor a dashing and debonair silver-haired bespectacled and impeccably dressed mentor who's been known to give out hugs on occasion, nor a famed designer who can cut one dead with merely a sentence tossed their way. Yep. No Klum, No Kors, No Gunn.

Watch out! Mondo Guerra is back for the new All-Star season of Project Runway!
“What the heck am I doing here?” is what fashion designer Mondo Guerra said to himself when he wound up back on the Project Runway set for the upcoming All-Star season, which kicks off on Lifetime on January 5th. He's returning to the reality competition along with previous contestants like Season 1’s Austin Scarlett, Season 8’s Michael Costello and Season 4’s Rami Kashou, Guerra admitted that it was a bit of culture shock returning for the tenth season of the show. He took the runner-up spot on the eighth season - in one of the more controversial upsets in the reality show’s history. Is the openly gay Guerra, who revealed his HIV-positive status during that same season, ready to make sure he captures the top spot this time around?

Project Runway All-Stars kicks off January 5. Here, we refresh our memories about the designers who've set their sights on another shot at fashion glory.
Michael Costello worked week after week of Project Runway season 8 to show off elegant, classy trends that earned wins in as many challenges as season winner Gretchen Jones. His entertaining personality made Costello an easy fan favorite throughout the course of the season. And, probably most impressive of all, Michael Costello has never had any formal training.

Look who we ran into at the Reality Rocks Expo in Los Angeles on Saturday (April 9): From Last season's "Project Runway," Michael Costello.
He was the target of lots of criticism from his competitors who believed he lacked the skills to compete on the same level with them. Regardless, he went on to win several challenges and their respect.
"I have my process," he tells Zap2it. "I taught myself how to sew. My mom taught me a few different things, but I taught myself by taking clothes apart, playing with fabric, and I created my own kind of crazy sewing technique that works for me and it works for my customers, too. And I'm able to use that to make functional clothing. And it worked on the show. The judges really showed me a lot of support with what I did."
The season was also marred by a controversial win by Gretchen Jones.

No winner of Project Runway has been more hotly contested than thin-lipped Beaker impersonator Gretchen Jones, whose triumph over season favorite Mondo Guerra was perhaps one of the worst decisions in the show’s history. But Heidi Klum is not shy about letting the world know that she knows that we know that we wasted an entire 20ish hours of our lives watching the wrong person win the prize. She “stepped out” in this gown, if you will. (I won’t. Loathe self for typing “stepped out” even in air quotes.)
Someone tore off the sleeves! Can you picture “Top Ameh-wican Desgin-uh Michael Kors” sneaking out of the workroom in stealth gear late at night? His black-ops clothes would be so sophisticated and chic, yet wearable.
Are you In or are you Out of love with Heidi’s sleeveless look?...

Heidi Klum Asked for Tim Gunn's Help in Swaying Project Runway's Final Vote? It's Not the First Time
Tim Gunn's always a candid fellow, but the Project Runway mentor let loose at a Kate Spade event in Pennsylvania last Friday when he shared his feelings about surprise season-eight champion Gretchen Jones. He also revealed that during the judges' final deliberations, Heidi Klum pulled him aside and asked him to help sway the judges to vote for Mondo. Excuse me, Heidi! That is not Tim's job. Check back Monday for our chat with runner-up Guerra, and read on for our post-finale conversation with Jones, who designed her winning collection after returning home to Portland and learning that her boyfriend had moved out of their shared home and that she wasn't going to have a place to live much longer.
She tells AOL TV that her personal life has calmed down a bit, that she was confident about the competition all along and that, yes, she's well aware of how she was perceived on the show ... and she's Ok with it.

Gretchen Jones is the big winner of Season 8 of "Project Runway," but not without some controversy.
In possibly the most emotionally dramatic season of the design reality show, the Portland, Oregon native scored a major upset on the Thursday, Oct. 28 finale over fan favorite Mondo Guerra and fellow finalist Andy South.
Although everyone agrees that Jones has excellent construction skills, the judges and other contestants are split on her design aesthetic. Some say it's fashion forward and beautiful, whereas others find it older-skewing and unexciting. Jones is philosophical about her detractors.
"I understand. I can't please everyone and that's okay with me," she tells Zap2it. "I know that I represented not only myself, but to me where the modern movement to where fashion is going. I think when you're an accessible designer but maybe challenging certain things, it comes with a very critical eye. I feel I was a very strong competitor.

Although two of the four judges argued against her collection on Thursday's heated season finale of Project Runway, winner Gretchen Jones isn't offended. "At that point, I was just pretty elated that I even got to present on national TV," she tells People. "I feel proud that Michael Kors and Nina Garcia fought for me and could see my potential. They're both huge industry leaders, and it means a lot to me." Kors and Garcia went head-to-head with host Heidi Klum and guest judge Jessica Simpson, both of whom fought hard for fan favorite Mondo Guerra, who presented a youthful,...

And following last night’s season finale, during which Gretchen Jones emerged the winner, TooFab asked which front runner had been his favorite -- Jones, Mondo Guerra or Andy South -- he was coy, telling TooFab, “They are all talented in their own way with very different styles so I can’t choose one.”

The Project Runway-watching population, or whatever's left of it, is in an uproar today over the finale of season eight last night, when fan-favorite Mondo Guerra lost to Gretchen Jones. Though he was the favorite to win, the title of top designer went to Gretchen Jones -- in what Klum called "the toughest decision in 'Project Runway' history." Jones walked away with $100,000 to start her own line, an editorial spread in Marie Claire , the opportunity to sell a fashion line on Piperlime.com and a $50,000 technology suite from Hewlett-Packard. The judges got heated while selecting the season-eight champion - and Heidi Klum called it the toughest decision in Project Runway history. After finalists Andy South, Gretchen Jones and Mondo Guerra showed their looks at New York City Fashion Week, the judges - including guest judge Jessica Simpson - debated for what seemed like hours over which designer should win. So who did they pick? To many, it was a surprise. Gretchen ended up winning the season, in a shocking upset over fan favorite Mondo (Andy had been eliminated first). The judges held a highly contentious discussion about the contestants' collections,...

The goal of 'Project Runway' -- as described by Tim Gunn's catchphrase -- is to "Make it work." Of course, it's a lot of work to make it work, and not everyone can handle it. Some players don't have the talent, some don't have the drive. It takes 14 weeks to sort the good from the bad.
But nothing lasts forever -- not even the lengthiest season of 'Runway' ever. And so we reached the finale (Thu., 9Pm Et on Lifetime). Three finalists remained: Andy South, Gretchen Jones, and Mondo Guerra. Who would win? Heidi Klum called it the "toughest decision" in the show's history -- but really, it was and it wasn't.

Gretchen Jones stole the title of "Project Runway" season 8 winner from Mondo Guerra. These two, along with Andy South were competing against each other in the Thursday, October 28 finale, but it was the last-standing woman who impressed Heidi Klum and the rest of the judges with her collection.
In the final runway, Gretchen showed her signature feminine design which had some parts fitted and other flowy. Nina Garcia described her clothes ready-to-wear but said it could use better styling. She liked Gretchen's prints, particularly the patchwork pants. Michael Kors loved the jewelry, Klum thought the prints are repetitive while guest judge Jessica Simpson wanted to see it popping.
After a lengthy discussion, the judges agreed that the 28-year-old from Portland, Ore. has more quality than her peers. Gretchen, in tears, said, "Thank you so much." She added later, "My God, I needed this so bad, in so many different ways.

So "Project Runway's" most dramatic rose ceremony, err, finale ever concludes with an appropriately exciting, nail-biting final runway and judges deliberation.
In the end Gretchen Jones takes home the hard-fought win over Mondo Guerra and Andy South after offering up a collection full of feminine signature looks that the judges felt showed she had her finger on the pulse of what was coming next in fashion. So she started and finished the series with wins.
Before we get into the frantic preparations, though, we're treated to a mini reunion/sobfest. Most of the highlights are about the drama from the season. Seriously, waterworks everywhere.
Ivy is still irked, but her anger is directed at Gretchen this time. Wait, weren't they friends? It's no surprise that Mr. Nice Guy Michael Costello is the first to defend Gretchen. Then Mondo steps in. Then they discuss how Mondo befriended Michael C. Now it's a lovefest.

Three designers show collections during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. But only one of them gets to be "in" when all is shown and judged. So who triumphed on the eighth season of Project Runway? Was it the wee Mondo Guerra, whose first name says it all when it comes to his talent? Or did Mondo get too "costumey," allowing Andy South's Laos-inspired separates to squeak by into the winner's circle? Or, did love-to-hate-her Gretchen Jones manage to elevate her urban-safari collection to runway-worthy high fashion? You're gonna love this. Gretchen upset the endlessly creative Mondo in the show's final moments, with the judges ultimately deciding that the...

Gretchen Jones has been named as the winner of the eighth season of Project Runway. The 28-year-old Portland, Oregon native nabbed the top prize over runner-up Mondo Guerra and third-placed Andy South in tonight's finale. Singer Jessica Simpson had joined Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia on the judging panel at Bryant Park. The collection - entitled 'Running Through Thunder' - was inspired by Jones's journey through the fashion industry and featured earth-toned pieces including long flowing chiffon dresses and pant suits. Garcia and Klum both agreed that the models looked "sexy and polished" while Kors loved the vibe of the collection, calling it "relaxed and easy". Simpson also said that she would love to wear most of the pieces shown. "This is crazy! I needed this so bad in so many ways," Jones said, as her (more)...

Project Runway's eighth season concludes tonight, and after Mondo Guerra, Gretchen Jones, or Andy South wins, that will mark the end of the third season on the show on Lifetime. The network has been pumping out seasons, but those who stuck around after the disastrous season six say that the show has gotten better, perhaps even topping its Bravo-hosted, Magical Elves-produced version in some respects. There's been evidence to the contrary: Tim Gunn ripped the...

You've seen the dresses, disasters and drama of Project Runway season 8, and Thursday, one designer will get his or her "in" with the fashion industry. So who's it going to be? Arguably, the favorite is Denver's Mondo Guerra, 32, who slowly became the season's sweetheart thanks to his colorful, patterned looks and inspiring backstory. He's facing off against Hawaii native Andy South, 23, whose structured, thought-provoking pieces have landed him in both the top and bottom three during the current season. The final competitor is Gretchen Jones, 28, a sustainable designer from Portland, Ore., who started off as the season's front-runner, but slowly...

Wow. So was Season 8 of "Project Runway" as dramatic for you as it was for us? We're hoping for some catharsis soon, but of course we have Part II of the finale to get through first. Let's hope no one passes out (oh wait, Ivy already did).
Down to the Final 3, and we admit we sorta wanted Michael Costello in the mix because where he goes, drama follows. Can you just imagine the catty comments the returning designers would have made? Would any of them even be able to work with him? And he's just the sweetest guy in the world.
Anyway, let's take a look at the three who actually are going to show at Fashion Week:
Andy South - He was terribly inconsistent but he slowly came into his own, which makes sense since he's only 23. He brings a unique warrior woman style into his designs, and has...

After eight seasons, Project Runway (TV)'s Nina Garcia says judging the upcoming finale (part one airing tonight at 9/8c on Lifetime) was her most difficult by far. "I voted to have two winners," she confides. Among the final four designers is edgy Hawaii native Andy South — "an excellent contender," Garcia says. "Great with texture, great with innovation. His aesthetic is very modern. Andy's biggest problem is time management." Confidence is no problem for eco-friendly Gretchen Jones. "She thinks she knows it all," Garcia chuckles. "She's great at making cool, relatable pieces, but I don't think she's used to hearing criticism."...

There are the reality TV stars you love to loathe—hi, Scott Disick!—and then there are those folks you just truly, simply hate. Lord knows the plethora of reality shows gives us quite a selection to chose from, but these tools top our current list: 1. Project Runway's Gretchen Jones: At first we were rooting for this homely chick. Then her Lake Michigan-size ego appeared and was blindly undeterred, blaming her middle-of-the-pack status on Heidi Klum as opposed to her own dull designs. The icing on the bitchy cake came last week, when Wretchen squeaked by elimination then condescended to the top three designers Michael C., Mondo and Andy by saying, "I'm just glad [the judges] gave me a second...
