The cancellation of The Goldbergs didn't come as a big surprise to fans earlier this year.
The series was in its tenth season, and numbers were falling, but given that Wednesday's finale felt more like a season finale, there are questions about whether there was time to craft a conclusion.
Unfortunately, the cast learned the series was done four days after the final episode was actually filmed.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, who played Beverly Goldberg for all ten seasons, opened up about the news in an interview with TV Line.
They told us like four days after we wrapped our season. So, like, two days before our wrap party," the star expressed.
"In retrospect, I guess [it] was the best way for it to happen because if we knew ahead of time, nothing would've gotten done. We would've all been sobbing," McLendon-Covey added.
Had the creatives been given more notice, the ideal finale would have included more closure.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the series finale of ABC’s The Goldbergs.
The Goldbergs got its happy ending Wednesday by wrapping up 10 years on ABC with a possible new relationship for Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), a secret marriage for Barry (Troy Gentile) and a ride in a fancy DeLorean for Adam (Sean Giambrone).
The episode titled “Bev to the Future” began with a family screening of Back to the Future before the discussion turned to the possibility of turning back the clock and reliving old glory days. Beverly had the perfect opportunity to do just that by attending a high school reunion with Adam as her reluctant “date.”
But Beverly soon realizes that Adam is nothing more than an inconvenient third wheel because she runs into George (Rob Corddry), an old flame from high school who she dated before marrying Murray.

Say it ain’t so, Schmoopie! After 10 seasons and 229 side-busting episodes, we’re saying goodbye to ABC’s ’80s-based sitcom The Goldbergs. Based on the life of series creator Adam F. Goldberg, the comedy explored the gnarliest decade via big-loving mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), bombastic father Murray (Jeff Garlin) and their three children: aspiring singer Erica (Hayley Orrantia), wired Barry (Troy Gentile) and video camera–toting Adam (Sean Giambrone) — as well as Beverly’s rascally father Albert “Pops” Solomon (George Segal). “Adam always had a very specific vision, and he really established just a great template for a family comedy,” says executive producer Alex Barnow. That included Goldberg’s real home video footage at the end of most episodes. Time travel to 1980-something — a phrase heard in each episode after the pilot — and relive this most excellent sitcom. Jeff Garlin's exit from The Goldbergs in 2021 surprised many, but one of his co-stars feels differently.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, who plays Beverly on the hit ABC comedy, is opening up about the departure.
"That was a long time coming," she said in a Sirius Xm interview with Andy Cohen this week.
"it was like, 'Ok, Ok, someone's finally listening to us,'" she recalled feeling when the comedian exited.
While Andy wondered if her co-star's exit resulted from many complaints, the actress nodded and then asked if they could move on from the topic.
She said, "exhausted by that topic and the Ptsd of it all… I just feel like the less people know about that, the better."
"No one benefits from knowing anything."
McLendon-Covey said that the series had already navigated the loss of George Segal, who died, and then the show had to write out Garlin's character.

Season 10 of "The Goldbergs" will be its last. After 10 years and over 200 episodes, the '80s-set period sitcom has locked in a series finale date of May 3, 2023. Deadline reports that ABC has decided not to renew the show, which is currently the longest-running live-action network comedy on TV.
Created by Adam F. Goldberg based on his own family and his experiences growing up in the 1980s, "The Goldbergs" premiered on ABC on September 24, 2013. Sean Giambrone plays the fictionalized version of Goldberg, with Wendi McLendon-Covey ("Reno 911") starring as the matriach, Beverly. Troy Gentile and Hayley Orrantia have also been with the show since the beginning, and all four actors renewed their contracts last year.

ABC‘s long-running sitcom The Goldbergs will come to an end with its ongoing tenth season. Deadline broke the news about the ’80s-set comedy series, revealing that the season finale set to air this May will also serve as the show’s series finale. The news may not come as a major surprise as the show’s undergone some significant changes in recent seasons with the loss of the late George Segal, who played Pops, and the exit of Jeff Garlin as patriarch Murray Goldberg. (Credit: Bob D’Amico / © ABC / Courtesy: Everett Collection) The half-hour series from creator Adam F. Goldberg made its debut back in 2013 and has managed to deliver more than 200 episodes to fans over its ten-year run. At the heart of it all are remaining series regulars Wendi McLendon-Covey as matriarch Beverly, Sean Giambrone as Adam, Troy Gentile as Barry, Hayley Orrantia as Erica, and Sam Lerner as Erica’s hubby Geoff Schwartz.

One of ABC's longest-running series is coming to a close.
Deadline revealed Thursday that The Goldbergs will wrap its run in the spring, with the Season 10 finale serving as its series finale.
A series finale date has not been set, and it's unclear at this stage how long the episode was set to be the swan song.
It's hard to imagine a series reaching a tenth season and leaving the air without a conclusive ending, but stranger things have happened.
The Goldbergs Season 10, airing Wednesdays on ABC, is averaging 2.5 million viewers and a 0.38 rating.
The numbers are down over 30% in the demo this season.
With aging shows having rising costs, they need to make a strong case for renewal, which comes in the form of ratings.
The numbers swell to 3.2 million viewers and a 0.6 rating with a week of DVR factored in.

“The Goldbergs” is coming to an end after 10 seasons on ABC, according to reports. The ’80s-set half-hour comedy was based on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood experiences.
With over 200 episodes and a decade-long run, the Sony Pictures Television series — which follows the title family in a Pennsylvania town — has earned the distinction of being the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air. The season finale, set to air May 3, will now serve as a series ender.
The logline for Season 10 is as follows: “With everyone living back under the same roof and Beverly adjusting to her new role as Grandsmotherer, the Goldbergs pandemonium is crazier than ever. As this latest chapter of life continues to unfold, the Goldbergs remind us that there is no bond greater than family, and there is nothing they can’t handle with each other’s support.”

“The Goldbergs” is ending after 10 seasons at ABC, Variety has confirmed with sources. The Season 10 finale set to air on May 3 will serve as the single-camera comedy’s series finale.
The move to end the series is not altogether surprising, even though it has been a cornerstone of the ABC comedy slate throughout its run with solid ratings returns. “The Goldbergs” is currently the longest-running live-action network comedy on the air, but has faced difficulties in the past few years. George Segal, who starred as Albert “Pops” Solomon on the show, passed away in early 2021. Later that same year, series star Jeff Garlin exited the show following an Hr misconduct investigation.
Ending the show also comes at a difficult time for the broadcast TV business, with the major networks having ordered just a handful of comedy pilots at this point in the traditional pilot season as overall pilot order volume continue to plummet.

ABC will say farewell to The Goldbergs this season.
The Disney-owned broadcast network’s longest-running scripted comedy series will conclude with its current 10th season, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Sources say calls were made Thursday afternoon to inform the show’s stars and creatives.
The Goldbergs has been a stalwart for ABC for the past decade, remaining the network’s comedy constant for executive regimes covering Paul Lee, Channing Dungey, Karey Burke and Craig Erwich.
The series, which has weathered the departures of star Jeff Garlin following multiple Hr complaints, is produced by Sony Pictures Television. ABC’s lack of ownership on the sitcom, paired with declining linear ratings and pricey licensing fees for an aging series, made an 11th season increasingly unlikely.

Exclusive (Updated With Confirmation & Details): The Goldbergs’ journey through the 1980s is over. The family comedy’s current tenth season will be its last, with the May 3 season finale serving as a series finale. (Watch a promo for The Goldbergs‘ final episodes above.)
This does not come as a surprise. For shows of that age, renewals are not straightforward because of rising costs and declining ratings, and there had been questions over the past couple of years on how long The Goldbergs can go. The half-hour, from creator Adam F. Goldberg and Sony Pictures TV, is the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air and, given the way the broadcast business is going, there likely won’t be many others coming behind it that would be able join the exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies with double-digit season, 200+ episode runs.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Goldbergs Season 10, Episode 5, “Uncle-ing.”] It feels like just yesterday that Erica Goldberg (Hayley Orrantia) was against the idea of giving Geoff Schwartz (Sam Lerner) the time of day on The Goldbergs, but this pair has come a long way and are facing their biggest milestone to date on the ABC comedy in the episode, “Uncle-ing.” While much of the installment focuses on Adam (Sean Giambrone) and Barry’s (Troy Gentile) quest to learn how to be the best uncles possible, the other half of the episode sees Erica eager to escape home for a mini babymoon before her and Geoff’s bundle of joy arrives. Of course, nothing goes as planned as Geoff books them reservations at an adult spa resort with questionable facilities and tricks Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) to “follow” them in the wrong direction so the couple can have proper alone time. The Goldbergs said goodbye to Murray, their fictional patriarch, during the season 10 premiere Wednesday night.
It’s a farewell that balances the long-running ABC comedy’s signature sense of humor and its ’80s time period with an authentic look at the emotional range of grieving. It’s also a character send-off that follows former star Jeff Garlin’s exit last season after an Hr investigation and multiple complaints about his on-set behavior.
The aptly titled episode, “If You Build It,” sets the stage for the Goldbergs family, and ultimately the show, to build (or rebuild) their lives — and a show that will draw viewers back. It opens with a Patton Oswalt-narrated recap of the months between the season nine finale and Wednesday’s premiere. Through a series of speedy sequences, viewers get caught up on each family member.

Jeff Garlin’s ‘Goldbergs’ Character Getting Killed Off in Season 10 After His On-Set Conduct Scandal
The showrunners of The Goldbergs confirmed that Jeff Garlin’s character on the show, Murray, would be killed off following the actor’s departure from the ABC sitcom amidst accusations of on-set misconduct.
Garlin left the series back in December, following reports that he allegedly engaged in verbal and physical conduct that made people on the set of The Goldbergs feel uncomfortable. Because The Goldbergs was still filming its ninth season, the show had to figure out how to work around Garlin’s absence, but Season 10 will pick up several months after Murray’s death.

Eight months after comedian Jeff Garlin left "The Goldbergs," showrunners have revealed how they're planning to get rid of Murray Goldberg. According to Variety, they've decided to go with the simplest, if most shocking, solution: killing off the character. Not only will Murray be dead when the new season premieres in September, but his family will already be mostly past their grief, as they anticipate welcoming Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff's (Sam Lerner) new baby.
"This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father's gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that," Alex Barnow said. He and co-showrunner Chris Bishop revealed that the new season will pick up months after Murray's death. As Barnow puts it, "we're starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It's an opportunity for this interesting...

The Goldbergs are moving on. The ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, which debuts its 10th season on Sept. 21, is finding a way forward without patriarch Murray (Jeff Garlin). Garlin exited the series in December 2021 following an Hr investigation into misconduct allegations. In an interview with Vanity Fair that same month, Garlin said his jokes were "misconstrued" and there was "nothing physical" that happened. (You can find his full statement here). The show will now explain away Murray's disappearance by picking up months after his death, delving into a new world where now-married couple Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) are having their first...

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop unveiled how “The Goldbergs” will deal with Garlin’s messy departure from the series midway through its ninth season. The Prince was the first to be eliminated after a rendition of “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. While earlier in the season the judges had assumed that the contestant behind the frog mask was an athlete, they were confident he had to be a performer by the end of his run. Guesses included Ben Platt, Ricky Martin and Matt Bomer — who are all good friends of the actual competitor, Cheyenne Jackson.
“Once they started honing in on the theatricality of The Prince, it was very funny to hear them kind of listing off all of my friends,” Jackson told TheWrap. “I was laughing inside my frog head.”
