Geremy Jasper’s debut film “Patti Cake$,” which underwent a heated bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival, will be released in theaters on July 7, Fox Searchlight announced Friday. The company acquired the film for $9.5 million at the festival, beating out several other studios including Lionsgate, Annapurna, and Amazon. The comedy received strong reviews at its Sundance. “Patti Cake$” stars newcomer Danielle McDonald as the titular rapper — real name Patricia Dombrowski — and follows her attempts to make it big in New Jersey’s hip-hop underground scene even as her life continues to fall apart. The Sundance Festival reveals the state of the indie film market, and 2017 will be remembered as the year of Amazon Studios and Netflix. And given the festival’s robust TV and Vr programs,, which were dominated by Google and Facebook/Oculus, there’s further digital disruption ahead.
According to one indie distributor, Sundance 2017’s valuations and sales are almost a third higher than last year. Put the same titles into the Sundance market two years ago, and they would have sold for far less. That’s because Netflix and Amazon Studios on the narrative side are dramatically driving up prices. “It’s just ridiculous what the digital guys are doing to the marketplace,” said one veteran indie CEO. “‘The Big Sick’ is a great little movie but it’s a $4 million -$6 million buy. There’s no logic to this model.”
However, Sundance has always been about the haves and the have-nots.

The Sundance Film Festival continued without letup, despite a brutal snowstorm that blanketed Park City, Utah in winter weather. Many attendees started to pack up on Tuesday, but the intrepid journalists who remained have continued to watch movies and share their impressions. Here are some of the movies we've been hearing the most about for the past couple of days. Patti Cake$: No big names? Not much budget? No problem! Geremy Jasper's film follows a young woman (Danielle McDonald) who dreams of hip hop stardom from behind the bar at a dingy dive in New Jersey. Reportedly, audiences have been delighted. Watch: The hottest movie at #Sundance today was the New Jersey-set hip hop joint, Patti Cake$. Here are my thoughts. pic.twitter.com/7JaHbq9ZeU &mdash...
