Rose Ayling-Ellis, the actress who this year became the first deaf contestant on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, is now also the first deaf winner of the British dance competition series, after triumphing in its 19th season.
Ayling-Ellis shared her win with professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice—prevailing over John Whaite and Johannes Radebe, who together comprised the series’ first same-sex partnership.
Ayling-Ellis is best known on the acting side for her turn as Frankie Lewis in BBC One’s long-running soap opera, EastEnders. The 27-year-old performer and advocate of deaf awareness has also previously appeared in the series Summer of Rockets and Casualty, among other projects.

The stars of Waterloo Road, both past and present, have paid tribute to the show after confirmation that it will end in 2015.
The BBC announced earlier today (April 2) that the long-running school drama will conclude with its tenth series.
Cast members from the show's nine series so far have taken to Twitter to praise the show for its championing of young talent ahead of the final series, which will begin later this year.

Following some reader questions about various Waterloo Road cast members and characters, we can confirm some more departures and other updates after getting the official word from the BBC. Reports on Twitter that Sian Diamond will leave the school are correct. Former Holby City star Jaye Jacobs bows out from the role in the second part of series eight, meaning that her on-screen exit will air in 2013. Katie McGlynn (Jodie 'Scout' Allen) and Paige Meade (Jade Fleming) are also on the leavers' list, while yesterday it was confirmed that Mark Benton is bowing out as Chalky. Waterloo Road's Katie McGlynn has teased her character's secret wedding to Danilo in tomorrow's episode of the BBC school drama.
