Prime Video has released its “Red White & Royal Blue” film, based on Casey McQuiston’s novel, and viewers are in store for some great twists on romantic comedy tropes and foreign relations.
McQuiston’s novel follows Alex Claremont Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), son of the first woman to become president of the United States (Uma Thurman) as he butts heads with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) constantly, which gets them both into trouble. The president sent her son to the royal wedding with only one operative: Do not cause a scene. But apparently, he caused a big enough commotion to take the cake — literally a large wedding cake toppled onto Alex and Henry after an altercation on the dance floor. Smoothing things over, at least in a famous fake friendship kind of way, the boys strike up an actual relationship, romantic and all.

Content warning: the following story contains spoilers for "Red, White & Royal Blue."
Turning a beloved novel into a film is always a challenge, since there are inevitably things from the book that will have to be left out. In the new movie "Red, White & Royal Blue," based on Casey McQuiston's best-selling romance novel of the same name, director Matthew Lopez (who co-wrote the screenplay with Ted Malawer) had to make some choices about what to edit or change when adapting the book for the big screen. The book and movie both tell the love story of Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), first son of the United States, and Britain's Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), and their general trajectory is about the same in both tellings. But the world around them is quite a bit different between the book and the film, with some beloved characters getting completely cut from the narrative.

As much as we’d like to avoid addressing queer media as separate from non-queer media, at the moment, it feels like a celebratory fantasy that only in our dreams could come true. So many of our favorite books have been adapted for the screen. The wonderful characters coming to life in the flesh are incredible. Casey McQuiston’s novels’ characters are no strangers to the queer world. Their books Red, White, and Royal Blue and One Last Stop were both very well received by the book world. As more time passes, it feels like these imagined worlds where almost everyone is openly queer seem more realistic. Queer media has always been othered because, first, it’s queer, but at the same time, it’s deemed unacceptable to be too queer. Fortunately, things have changed drastically, and thanks to Heartstopper, there’s a positive representation of queer love in a...

There’s a world in which the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s novel Red, White & Royal Blue captures the horny energy and political idealism of its source material. It would be a campy romp that leans into the book’s bubble-gum logic without losing sight of what made the novel an immediate bestseller.
The version of Red, White & Royal Blue that we have, directed by Tony-award winning playwright Matthew López (The Inheritance) and premiering on Amazon Prime, lands like a fever dream. It’s a tangle of odd tones, roving direction and eccentric performances — a frenetic combo that makes it hard to buy the drama of this fantasy.
It shouldn’t be so tough. The story — the son of the U.S. president falls in love with a British prince — is charming in its improbability. Red, White & Royal Blue takes place in an alternate timeline, when...
